Structural Variations in Parotid Glands Induced by Radiation Therapy in Patients with Oral Carcinoma Observed on Contrast-Enhanced Computed Tomography.

BACKGROUND: Xerostomia is one of the commonest radiation-induced complications in patients with head and neck carcinoma. The aim of this study was to assess structural variations in parotid glands induced by radiation therapy in patients with oral carcinoma with contras-enhanced computed tomography (CECT). MATERIAL/METHODS: A retrospective study was performed in 41 patients with oral carcinoma who underwent CECT for head and neck malignancies before and after radiotherapy. We analyzed the relationship between parotid density variations, parotid volume change, as seen on CECT, and the mean rad

A Variation of Observation-to-imitate Plus Practice Intervention to Decrease Latency to Exercise Initiation and Increase Exercise Completion in Neurological Patients.

OBJECTIVES: Some patients referred to physical therapy demonstrate deficits in initiation and completion of physical therapy exercises during appointments. These challenges may create a barrier to benefitting from therapy. We evaluated the effect of observation-to-imitate plus practice (OTI + PP) on decreasing latency to exercise initiation and increasing exercise completion for 2 participants referred for inpatient rehabilitation physical therapy. METHODS: We used an AB multiple-baseline single-case research design to compare the OTI + PP intervention to each participant's baseline condition

Native MS and ligand observed NMR uncovers subtle SLiM binding variations that mediate HSP90-Hop PPI modulation.

We have previously demonstrated that a non-natural tetrazole containing peptide (2), which mimics the MEEVD Short Linear Motif (SLiM) found at the Heat Shock Protein 90 (HSP90) C-terminus, disrupts the transient protein-protein interaction (PPI) formed between HSP90 and the HSP70-HSP90 organizing protein (Hop) co-chaperone. However, the native MEEVD SLiM (1) showed negligible inhibitory activity despite similar binding affinity to the interacting HopTPR2A domain. To investigate the origin of this discrepancy, we combined native mass spectrometry (nMS) coupled to ion mobility (IM) with saturati

Between-centre variation in antibiotic therapeutic drug monitoring and obtaining surveillance cultures in Dutch ICUs: A retrospective observational study.

PURPOSE: Antimicrobial resistance is a major concern in intensive care units (ICUs), where infections and antibiotic use are common. Antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASPs) promote optimal infectious disease management through interventions such as Therapeutic Drug Monitoring (TDM) and selective digestive/oropharyngeal decontamination (SDD/SOD), but data on ICU-specific quality indicators (QIs) and between-centre variation are limited. This study aimed to evaluate infectious disease management in Dutch ICUs by assessing adherence to, and variation in, TDM and SDD/SOD practices. METHODS: In

A Computed Tomography (CT)-Based Observational Study of Anatomical Variations in the Sphenoid Sinus: Implications for Surgical Planning and Patient Outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: The sphenoid sinus (SS), a paired paranasal sinus located within the sphenoid bone, is crucial in various physiological and pathological processes. Its anatomical variations are of significant interest in clinical practice, particularly in otolaryngology, neurosurgery, and radiology. This study aims to determine the anatomical variations of the SS and related structures using computed tomography (CT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: An observational study was conducted at a tertiary care center. The study included 300 patients aged 7-70 who underwent CT brain scans. Exclusions included p

Sperm Heterogeneity Accounts for Sperm DNA Methylation Variations Observed in the Caput Epididymis, Independently From DNMT/TET Activities.

Following their production in the testis, spermatozoa enter the epididymis where they gain their motility and fertilizing abilities. This post-testicular maturation coincides with sperm epigenetic profile changes that influence progeny outcome. While recent studies highlighted the dynamics of small non-coding RNAs in maturing spermatozoa, little is known regarding sperm methylation changes and their impact at the post-fertilization level. Fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) was used to purify spermatozoa from the testis and different epididymal segments (i.e., caput, corpus and cauda) o

Temporal Variations in Incidence andOutcomes of Critical Illness Among Pregnant and Postpartum Women inCanada: A Population-Based Observational Study.

OBJECTIVE: Pregnancy-associated morbidity results in hundreds of thousands of deaths annually worldwide. Reducing maternal mortality is a key United Nations Millennium Development Goal. Although maternal mortality has declined in high-income countries, contemporary estimates of maternal morbidity and mortality trends in Canada are lacking. METHODS: This population-based study investigated all antepartum, peripartum, and postpartum women presenting to an acute care hospital in Canada from April 1, 2004 to March 31, 2015. The primary outcome was the change in rates of severe maternal morbidity

Anatomical level-dependent variation in ultrasonographic skin-to-epiglottis depth and its diagnostic performance for difficult laryngoscopy: A prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Ultrasonographic skin-to-epiglottis depth (SED) has been proposed as a predictor of difficult laryngoscopy (DL). Most studies have evaluated transverse measurements at a single anatomical level, and the influence of parasagittal imaging and measurement level on diagnostic performance remains unclear. This study aimed to assess anatomical level-dependent variation in parasagittal SED and to compare its diagnostic accuracy for predicting DL. METHODS: In this prospective observational study, 150 adult patients undergoing elective surgery under general anaesthesia were evalua

Dynamic Observation of Colonic Lesions, Commensal Microbiome, and Mycobiome Variations in Trinitrobenzene Sulfonic Acid-Induced Experimental Crohn's Disease in Rats.

INTRODUCTION: Crohn's disease (CD) is an inflammatory bowel disease characterized by chronic inflammation of the entire digestive lining. Although the pathogenesis of CD remains unclear, multiple factors, especially altered microbiota, are among its causes. METHODS: In this study, an experimental CD model was established by trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS) enema. Then the dynamic changes of colonic tissue lesions, tight junctions, inflammation response, and oxidative stress are respectively tested by hematoxylin and eosin staining, immunofluorescence staining, and commercial kits. 16S rRN

Extremely rare bilateral variation of the posterior superior alveolar artery on the maxillary sinus floor observed using CBCT: A case report.

The posterior maxilla is particularly susceptible to bone resorption and poses significant anatomical challenges for surgical interventions, including sinus augmentation and dental implant placement. The Posterior Superior Alveolar Artery (PSAA), which usually courses along the lateral wall of the maxillary sinus, is essential for supplying blood to this area. Nonetheless, variations in the PSAA's position and diameter can increase the risk of complications during and after surgery. We here report the case of a 36-year-old male patient presented for implant treatment in the posterior maxilla.

Iliac vein variation in the sacral promontory on three-dimensional computed tomography angiography: a prospective observational study before laparoscopic sacrocolpopexy.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Venous injury may occur during exposure of the anterior longitudinal ligament at the anterior sacral promontory (SP). We aimed to quantitatively measure the extent of the vascular window (VW) in front of the SP in patients with internal iliac vein (IIV) variations using preoperative three-dimensional computed tomography angiography (3DCTA). We hypothesized that patients with IIV variations would have a narrow VW. METHODS: This prospective observational study included patients scheduled for laparoscopic sacrocolpopexy (LSC) between July 2022 and April 2023 who unde

Variation between hospital caesarean delivery rates when Robson's classification is considered: An observational study from a French perinatal network.

INTRODUCTION: WHO has recommended using Robson's Ten Group Classification System (TGCS) to monitor and analyze CD rates. Its failure to take some maternal and organizational factors into account, however, could limit the interpretation of CD rate comparisons, because it may contribute to variations in hospital CD rates. OBJECTIVE: To study the contribution of maternal socioeconomic and clinical characteristics and hospital organizational factors to the variation in CD rates when using Robson's ten-group classification system for CD rate comparisons. METHODS: This prospective, observational,

Can different definitions of date of cancer incidence explain observed international variation in cancer survival? An ICBP SURVMARK-2 study.

BACKGROUND: Differences in registration practices across population-based cancer registries may contribute to international variation in survival estimates. In particular, there are variations in recorded date of incidence (DOI) as cancer registries have access to different sources of information and use different rules to determine an official DOI. This study investigates the impact of different DOI rules on cancer survival estimates. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Detailed data on dates of pathological confirmation and hospital admittance were collected from three registries participating in the IC

Radiological observations during transpyloric tube feeding in infants of low birth weight. Perforation of the duodenum and variations in normal duodenal anatomy.

Perforation of the duodenum is a serious complication of transpyloric tube feeding in infants of low birth weight. Polyvinyl chloride and (less commonly) silicone tubes have been implicated. Altered radiographic configuration of the tube in the region of the superior or inferior flexure, associated with clinical deterioration, pneumoperitoneum, peritonitis, or a retroperitoneal fistula, is diagnostic of duodenal perforation. The configuration of the tube may vary during uncomplicated transpyloric alimentation and is frequently incompatible with the expected anatomical course. Contrast examinat
