Sinonasal cancer and occupational exposure to textile dust.

Data from a case-control study conducted at 27 hospitals in France in 1986-88 were analyzed to examine the association between exposure to textile dust and sinonasal cancer. The study included 207 cases and 409 controls. Detailed information on occupational history and other potential risk factors for sinonasal cancer was collected. Exposure to textile dust (probability and level of exposure, type of textile fiber) was assessed by an expert in industrial hygiene. Among women, exposure to textile dust was associated with an elevated risk of squamous cell carcinoma (odds ratio (OR) = 2.45, 95% c

Renal effects of environmental and occupational lead exposure.

Environmental and industrial lead exposures continue to pose major public health problems in children and in adults. Acute exposure to high concentrations of lead can result in proximal tubular damage with characteristic histologic features and manifested by glycosuria and aminoaciduria. Chronic occupational exposure to lead, or consumption of illicit alcohol adulterated with lead, has also been linked to a high incidence of renal dysfunction, which is characterized by glomerular and tubulointerstitial changes resulting in chronic renal failure, hypertension, hyperuricemia, and gout. A high in

Parental occupational lead exposure and low birth weight.

This study suggests that paternal occupational lead exposure may be associated with low birth weight in the offspring. The odds of low birth weight rose fivefold among infants of fathers who were potentially exposed to high levels of lead during the period 6 months before pregnancy to the end of pregnancy (adjusted odds ratio (aOR) = 4.7, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.1-20). This effect was most prominent for low-birth-weight infants who were both preterm and small for gestational age. There was a suggestion of a gradual increase of the odds of low birth weight at medium levels of exposure,

Prevention of occupational cyanide exposure in autopsy prosectors.

Autopsy prosectors examining individuals with cyanide poisoning are at risk for occupational cyanide exposure. No protective autopsy precautions to mitigate this risk have been published. We report an autopsy on an individual with cyanide poisoning where the procedure was performed in a negatively pressured isolation room and the stomach was opened under a biosafety cabinet hood. None of the three autopsy prosectors had measurable cyanide in pre or post procedure blood specimens. We recommend that similar precautions be taken in all autopsies where cyanide is suspected as a possible cause of d

Occupational exposure to dust in slate pencil manufacture.

Slate pencils are manufactured from natural rock known as Binota Shale in small factories. Since the dust generated by stone-cutting and groove-making machines during the process contains a very high percentage of free silica and the particles are of sizes ranging up to a few microns in diameter the exposure both to respirable and to total inhalable airborne dust was assessed. Dust sizing revealed that all of the dust was respirable (less than 2.5 microns). Measurement of the intake velocity of the exhaust system in many cases showed it to be less than 10 m s-1. Suggestions are made for improv

[Health effects of non-occupational exposure to asbestos].

Mesothelioma has occurred in a relative large number not only among miners but also among non-occupationally exposed persons living in the northwestern region of Cape State of South Africa, where crocidolite is mined and transported. The long-term residents of Thetford Mines in Quebec Province, Canada, who have never engaged in mining and milling of chrysolite have not shown an excess mortality of respiratory diseases. Tremolite in soil is responsible for mesothelioma among residents of certain geologic regions such as Cyprus, Corcica, northwestern Greece and Turkey. An increased prevalence of

Effects of paternal occupational exposure on spontaneous abortions.

BACKGROUND: Paternal exposure to mutagenic agents has been suggested to affect pregnancy outcome adversely. METHODS: A nationwide data base of medically diagnosed spontaneous abortions and other pregnancies and national census data was used to evaluate the effects of men's occupational exposures on risk of spontaneous abortion in 99,186 pregnancies in Finland. Census data from the years 1975 and 1980 provided information about the occupation, industry, and socioeconomic status. A job-exposure classification was developed to classify women and their husbands according to possible occupational

Cardiac arrhythmias during occupational exposure to fluorinated hydrocarbons.

The effects of occupational exposure to chlorodifluoromethane (FC 22) and dichlorodifluoromethane (FC 12) on cardiac rhythm were examined. The subjects were six men who repaired refrigerators (age 31-56, mean 46 years) and a control group of six plumbers (age 29-54, mean 45 years). Ambulatory electrocardiograms (ECG) were recorded for 24 hours on the day of exposure and on a control day. The ECG tapes were automatically analysed with a Reynolds pathfinder 3 apparatus and all aberrant complexes recorded by the machine were checked. One person read all the tapes without knowing whether or not th

Childhood cancer and occupational radiation exposure in parents.

To test the hypothesis that a parent's job exposure to radiation affects his or her child's risk of cancer, the authors compared this exposure during the year before the child's birth for parents of children with and without cancer. Parents of children with cancer were no more likely to have worked in occupations, industries, or combined occupations and industries with potential ionizing radiation exposure. Bone cancer and Wilms' tumor occurred more frequently among children of fathers in all industries with moderate potential ionizing radiation exposure. Children with cancer more often had fa

Proportion of lung cancers due to occupational exposure.

The proportions of male lung cancers due to occupational exposure and, respectively, to cigarette smoking in a highly industrialized area of Northern Italy were estimated in a population-based case-control study in 1976-9. Two hundred and four out of the 211 lung cancer cases and 351 controls sampled from the source population were questioned about their occupational and smoking histories. On the basis of the occupational history each subject was classified as probably exposed (+), possibly exposed (?), or unexposed (-) to one or more of the chemicals known to be carcinogenic for the human lun

Persistent photosensitivity following occupational exposure to epoxy resin.

Persistent photosensitivity developed in eight men following occupational exposure to hot epoxy resin fumes. The condition was limited to sites the resin contacted. Small doses of ultraviolet-A light (2 to 5 joules/sq cm) evoked abnormal reactions consisting of erythema, edema, and papules in the clinically involved skin. Positive photopatch tests to epoxy resin were observed in four subjects, and to 4, 4'-isopropylidenediphenol (Bisphenol A) in all. The photosensitivity is most probably due to photocontact allergy to 4,4'-isopropylidenediphenol or to a closely related chemical.

The formaldehyde dispute - Part B: scientific critique of EPA's formaldehyde occupational exposure values (OEVs) and proposed alternative occupational exposure limits (OELs).

In 2024, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) finalized its Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) Toxicological Review and Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) Risk Evaluation for formaldehyde. After analyzing all the data that they deemed relevant, TSCA relied on IRIS's proposed inhalation reference values to establish an 8-hour occupational exposure value (OEV) of 0.11 ppm derived from epidemiological evidence of nasopharyngeal cancer. They also developed a 15-minute OEV of 0.17 ppm based on the goal of preventing sensory irritation. In an earlier draft of EPA's TSCA Risk Evalua

Ototoxic effects of occupational exposure to styrene and co-exposure to styrene and noise.

Ototoxicity of styrene and the synergistic action of styrene and noise have been shown in rats. The respective data in humans are scarce and equivocal. This study evaluated the effects of occupational exposure to styrene and combined exposures to styrene and noise on hearing. The study group, comprised of 290-yacht yard and plastic factory workers, was exposed to a mixture of organic solvents, having styrene as its main compound. The reference group, totaling 223 subjects, included (1) white-collar workers, exposed neither to solvents nor noise and (2) metal factory workers, exposed exclusivel

Occupational and Environmental Cholangiocarcinoma-Related Toxic Exposures.

Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is a malignancy that originates from the epithelial cells of the biliary system. Despite advancements in medical diagnostic techniques, CCAs remain a challenge to detect due to their silent clinical progression, making it difficult to diagnose these diseases. There are several well-established risk factors for CCA, including biliary tract infection and inflammation. However, there is also growing evidence that community and occupational exposures play a significant role in the development of bile duct cancers. This review examines the geographical distribution of these

Occupational exposures and sarcoidosis: a rapid review of the evidence.

BACKGROUND: Sarcoidosis is a rare, multisystem, inflammatory condition associated with the formation of granulomas. Diagnosis can be challenging because of non-specific symptoms complicating epidemiological investigations of its aetiology. Despite research efforts, a review of the current state of the evidence is needed. AIMS: To assess the evidence for an association between occupational exposures and the development of sarcoidosis. To determine if workers in any occupation are at a greater risk of developing sarcoidosis. METHODS: This rapid review follows the methodology suggested by the W
