Vehicle occupant injury severity on highways: an empirical investigation.

Accident severity analysis is important to both researchers and practitioners because of its implications in accident cost estimation, external cost estimation and road safety. Although much research has been done to explore the factors influencing crash-injury severity, few studies have investigated the association between severity and traffic characteristics collected real-time during the time the accident occurred. We apply a random parameters ordered probit model to explore the influence of speed and traffic volume on the injury level sustained by vehicle occupants involved in accidents on

Occupational injury in the United Arab Emirates: epidemiology and prevention.

BACKGROUND: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is developing rapidly, with many foreign construction, farm and industrial workers. AIMS: To assess the epidemiology of occupational injury hospitalizations using a trauma registry. METHODS: Surgical admissions from March 2003 to April 2005 were recorded in the registry at the main trauma hospital in Al Ain city (population 348,000). Prevention-related variables were analysed using SPSS and severity was quantified by injury severity scores (ISS). RESULTS: There were 614 occupational injury hospitalizations, an incidence of approximately 136/100,000

[Sleeping disorders and injury prevention of occupational or domestic accidents].

Obstructive sleep apnoeas affect a significant proportion of the middle-aged population. They are due to the closure of upper airways during sleep and cause fragmented sleep, which leads to excessive daily drowsiness. Sleepiness due to apnoea is acknowledged by 10 to 30% of subjects in epidemiological surveys. It impairs vigilance, and therefore represents a risk factor for traffic, domestic and work-related accidents. In the case of domestic accidents, a study shows an increased number of accidents have been reported by subjects with apnoeas; a second study reports the reduction in the freque

Nonfatal occupational injury among California farm operators.

We conducted a population-based telephone survey addressing farm-work-related (FWR) injuries among California farm operators. Of 1947 participants (80.4% response), 135 farm operators reported 160 FWR injuries in the preceding year, yielding a one-year cumulative incidence for any FWR injury of 6.9% (95% CI 5.8%-8.2%), or a mean 8.2 FWR injuries per 100 farmers in the preceding year (95% CI 6.8-9.7). Multiple injury events in the same individual occurred more frequently than predicted by chance. Sprains and strains (29.4%) were the most frequently reported injury and predominantly involved the

[Ligament lesions of the knee--also a typical occupational injury].

Critical evaluation of 62 patients totalizing 63 operations with acute traumatic rupture of knee ligaments in a predominantly rural population. In 21 cases (30%) the lesions have been the result of typical work-injuries. A specific older group of patients was concerned (average age 50.2 years). 75% of these cases presented additional intrarticular lesions at operation. The postoperative evaluation 1-5 years later confirmed the heavy use of the knees in this rural population. We therefore strongly advocate an early primary repair of the ruptured ligaments of the knee especially in work-injuries

Dupuytren's disease--the influence of occupation and previous hand injuries.

The influence of handedness, work and previous hand trauma is studied in 901 persons with Dupuytren's disease, collected in an epidemiological study of 15,950 citizens in a small, Norwegian town. Dupuytren's disease occurred in all occupational groups, but the prevalence was higher and the contracture more severe in people doing hard manual work than in people doing light or non manual work. Persons with Dupuytren's disease has sustained previous hand trauma more frequently than the general population, and the interval between trauma and first sign of disease was usually a few years. Characteristics and Predictors of Occupational Injury Among Career Firefighters.

The purpose of this study was to assess occupational injury characteristics and predictors among career firefighters. A total of 249 firefighters from central Texas and northern California participated in this Internet-based survey. Approximately 27% of firefighters had reported an occupational injury within the previous 12 months. The majority of injuries occurred on the scene of a non-fire call while performing an activity that required lifting, pushing, or pulling. Firefighters' backs were most frequently injured. Of the reported injuries, approximately 18% returned to work on modified duty

Disabling occupational injury in the US construction industry, 1996.

In 1996 the US construction industry comprised 5.4% of the annual US employment but accounted for 7.8% of nonfatal occupational injuries and illness and 9.7% of cases involving at least a day away from work. Information in the published literature on the disability arising from construction injuries is limited. The construction claims experience (n = 35,790) of a large workers' compensation insurer with national coverage was examined. The leading types and sources of disabling occupational morbidity in 1996 in the US construction industry were identified. Disability duration was calculated fro

A state trauma registry as a tool for occupational injury surveillance.

The goal of occupational surveillance is to identify and determine the magnitude of work-related disease and injury and workplace hazards for the purposes of focusing prevention programs and tracking their effectiveness. There are a number of databases that collect information on pieces of the puzzle of workplace exposure and adverse health outcomes. Other than that for the fatalities, none of these datasets specifically describes the most severe occupational injuries or their attendant disability. The goal of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of the Illinois Trauma Registry (ITR) in t

Accidents and injuries in child vehicle occupants in New Zealand.

Records of reported child vehicle occupant fatalities and injuries were examined. Child vehicle occupants accounted for approximately 5 percent of all road injuries and deaths in 1979, with an approximate hospital cost of one million dollars per year. It is thus worth spending considerable sums of money on countermeasures. The problem of parents' perception of risk is illustrated by the observation that annually only one child in 1 000 is injured and one in 50 000 dies as an occupant of a vehicle. International comparisons show New Zealand child occupant accident rates per 100 000 population t

Musculoskeletal Occupational Injuries among Orthopedic Surgeons: Risk Factors and Insights from a Cross-Sectional Study.

INTRODUCTION: Fibrous dysplasia (FD) accounts for 5-7% of all benign bone tumors. It presents in two main forms - monostotic, which is more common affecting a single bone and presenting usually in 3rd decade of life; polyostotic, affecting several bones, is less common, and is seen mainly in the 1st decade of life. These usually present as bone pain or pathological fracture. It may also be part of McCune-Albright syndrome. Since the femur is an important weight-bearing bone in the human body, most cases of FD affecting the femur present as pathological fracture more early than other sites. The

Surveillance of acute nonfatal occupational inhalation injuries treated in US hospital emergency departments, 2014-2017.

BACKGROUND: Acute nonfatal occupational inhalation injuries are caused by exposures to airborne toxicants and contaminants in the workplace. A 1990s study found that US emergency department (ED)-based inhalation injury rates were higher than those seen in the United Kingdom and Canada. This study examines 4 years of hospital ED data to estimate current rates of occupational inhalation injuries. METHODS: Data from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System Occupational Supplement were used to identify nonfatal occupational inhalation injuries treated in US hospital EDs from 2014 to 201
