Occupational stress, anxiety, and PTSD following needle stick injuries in orthopaedic healthcare workers: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Needle stick injuries (NSIs) represent a serious occupational hazard for healthcare workers (HCWs), particularly in surgical departments like orthopaedics. Beyond the risk of blood-borne infections, NSIs can cause significant psychological distress. OBJECTIVES: To assess the incidence of NSIs and associated psychological outcomes such as stress, anxiety, and PTSD among doctors and nurses in the orthopaedics department. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of 337 HCWs was conducted using a structured online questionnaire. Data on demographics, NSI experience, reporting behavior, anxi

A nurse-centered edge-server wearable system for real-time monitoring of occupational stress in clinical care.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Occupational stress among clinical nurses is a long-standing quality-of-care concern associated with burnout, attrition, lapses in patient safety, and erosion of workforce wellbeing. Continuous, nurse-centered monitoring of within-shift physiological stress states is therefore an emerging priority for nursing innovation and quality improvement (QI), yet routine clinical adoption of wearable monitoring is constrained by accuracy, response time, communication load, alert fatigue, and physiological differences across individual nurses. This study proposes the Nurse-cent

CKDu and Heat Stress Nephropathy Across Eras: Regional Heterogeneity, Occupational Evidence, and Prevention in a Warming World.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease of uncertain etiology (CKDu), increasingly framed as heat stress nephropathy (HSN) in endemic settings, has evolved from a regional enigma into a climate-health concern. Affecting young workers outside the diabetes-hypertension axis, it shows how heat, labor, dehydration, and social vulnerability converge on the kidney. CKDu/HSN is best approached as heterogeneous kidney disease phenotypes: occupational heat stress is strongly supported in Mesoamerica and selected populations, whereas co-exposures, water insecurity, vulnerability, and genetic or developmental

Occupational Burnout, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Intention to Resign Among Nursing Personnel During Public Health Emergencies.

AIM: Studies have shown that nursing staff are prone to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), occupational burnout and turnover tendency in public health emergencies, but the incidence of these three and their influencing factors during the outbreak of COVID-19 have not been clarified. The aim of this study was to explore the mediating mechanism of occupational burnout between PTSD and turnover intention in nursing staff in public health emergencies. DESIGN: The study was a cross-sectional survey involving 1087 nursing personnels from 17 provinces in China. Convenience sampling was employed

Occupational Burnout in Nurses Is due to Long-Term Work Stress Rather Than COVID-19 Pandemic Event.

AIM: This study aims to explore occupational burnout among Chinese nurses from two perspectives: first, by comparing changes in emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation and personal accomplishment before and after the COVID-19 pandemic; and second, by identifying long-term work-related stressors and structural factors contributing to burnout. DESIGN: A mixed-methods approach was adopted, combining a systematic review with qualitative interviews. The qualitative component involved semi-structured interviews with 53 hospital-employed nurses from various departments and regions across China, focu

Chronic kidney disease of non-traditional origin in Mesoamerica: a disease primarily driven by occupational heat stress.

The death toll of the epidemic of chronic kidney disease of nontraditional origin (CKDnt) in Mesoamerica runs into the tens of thousands, affecting mostly young men. There is no consensus on the etiology. Anecdotal evidence from the 1990s pointed to work in sugarcane; pesticides and heat stress were suspected. Subsequent population-based surveys supported an occupational origin with overall high male-female ratios in high-risk lowlands, but small sex differences within occupational categories, and low prevalence in non-workers. CKDnt was reported in sugarcane and other high-intensity agricultu

Addressing occupational stress among health staff in nongovernment controlled Northern Syria: Supporting resilience in a dangerous workplace.

INTRODUCTION: Syrian medical staff working in non-government controlled areas of Syria operate in situations that expose them to great personal danger, while they must often face the same challenges as the people they help. Supporting the wellbeing of these staff is crucial to the operation of health services for internally displaced Syrians given the large-scale destruction of healthcare infrastructure. METHODS: Findings from a staffcare programme designed by a grassroots Syrian psychosocial organisation in Southern Turkey and implemented in a medical nongovernment organisation in Idlib in N

Occupational Exposure to Chemical Solvents and Heavy Metals and Oxidative Stress-Related Sperm Dysfunction in Textile Workers.

Occupational exposure to chemical solvents and heavy metals among workers in textile-related industries has emerged as a significant risk factor for male reproductive dysfunction; however, the underlying biological mechanisms remain incompletely understood. Oxidative stress has been proposed as a key mediator linking occupational exposure to impaired sperm morphology and function. This study aimed to evaluate the association between occupational exposure to chemical solvents and toxic metals and alterations in sperm function, with particular emphasis on oxidative stress-mediated pathways. In t

[Work stressors among physicians with and without the acquired cardiovascular disorders: assessment using the Occupational Stress Index].

The Occupational Stress Index (OSI) questionnaire for physicians was used in a case-control study, with a high participation rate (> 90%). The study was carried out among physicians employed at clinical institutions in Novi Sad, receiving their medical care at the health center situated within the Novi Sad clinical center. The cases were physicians with one or more of the acquired (potentially stress-related) cardiovascular disorders (ACVD) (myocardial infarction, angina pectoris, arterial hypertension and certain arrhythmias). The control group included physicians without manifest ACVD. Two O

Occupational exposure of health care workers (HCWs) to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV): stress reactions and counseling interventions.

As more people become infected with HIV, Health Care Workers (HCWs) have a greater likelihood of being exposed at work. HIV exposure threatens the life of the HCW and can elicit a stress reaction. Although HCWs have reactions similar to those of people who have been exposed to other traumatic events, the nature of this stressor and the length of time it lasts is unique. This article presents counseling interventions that address the needs of the individual HCW during this event. These counseling guidelines promote the HCW's discussion of the event and any relevant past unresolved traumatic exp
