Silica-Driven CO2 Reduction in Water Microdroplets.

Carbon dioxide (CO2), the most notorious greenhouse gas responsible for global warming and ocean acidification, could persist in the atmosphere for 50 to 200 years, posing substantial long-term environmental challenges. However, its environmental fate remains not fully clear. This study reveals a previously unrecognized silica-driven CO2 reduction pathway in ubiquitous water microdroplets, enabling the efficient conversion of CO2 primarily into formic acid, along with other C1 and C2 products such as methanol, acetic acid, and ethanol, under ambient conditions. Notably, the reaction proceeds a

Larval Arctic cod (Boreogadus saida) exhibit stronger developmental and physiological responses to temperature than to elevated pCO2.

High-latitude ecosystems are simultaneously warming and acidifying under ongoing climate change. Arctic cod (Boreogadus saida) are a key species in the Arctic Ocean and have demonstrated sensitivity to ocean warming and acidification as adults and embryos, but their larval sensitivity to the combined stressors is unknown. In a laboratory multi-stressor experiment, larval Arctic cod were exposed to a combination of three temperatures (1.8, 5 and 7.3°C) and two carbon dioxide (pCO2) levels (ambient: 330 μatm, high: 1470 μatm) from hatching to 6-weeks of growth. Mortality rates were highest at 7.

Physiological studies of the deep-water coral Madrepora oculata incubated at different temperatures and hydrostatic pressures.

Metabolic features of the deep-water coral Madrepora oculata were investigated for specimens originating from approximately 800 m depth in the Bay of Biscay (Northeast Atlantic). Incubations of live specimens were carried out as a function of temperature (7°C, 10°C and 13°C), and for the first time as a function of hydrostatic pressure (atmospheric and natural pressures). An influence of temperature was observed, with an approximately 40% reduction of oxygen consumption at a temperature cooler than in situ, but no obvious increase in a warmer experimental environment. CO2 production increased

Metallic Nanoparticle Catalysts for eCO2RR: Bridging C1 and Multi-Carbon Product Pathways.

CO2 is a greenhouse gas that contributes to global climate change by absorbing and emitting infrared light. The significant rise in CO2 concentrations, predominantly from fossil fuel combustion, has resulted in environmental concerns relating to global warming, ocean acidification, and biodiversity loss. Various mitigation strategies are proposed, including carbon capture and sequestration, carbon capture and utilization, and renewable energy integration. The electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (eCO2RR) is gaining popularity for its ability to produce important fuels and chemicals under mil

Intertidal mussel-symbiont associations act as CO2 sinks during daily emersion.

Human activities have disrupted the global carbon cycle, reducing carbon dioxide (CO₂) uptake by tidal wetlands and submerged vegetation. This exacerbates climate challenges, including rising temperatures and ocean acidification. Coastal systems such as mangroves and seagrasses serve as key carbon sinks, promising for CO₂ removal (CDR). Growing attention is being given to bivalves, whose calcification and reef-building activities shape coastal carbon dynamics. Most studies reduce bivalve impacts to a balance between individual CO₂ emissions and the carbon stored in their shells and tissues, of

Using Museum collections to assess the impact of industrialization on mussel (Mytilus edulis) calcification.

Mytilus edulis is a commercially and ecologically important species found along the east coast of the United States. Ecologically, M. edulis improves water quality through filtration feeding and provides habitat formation and coastal protection through reef formation. Like many marine calcifiers, ocean warming, and acidification are a growing threat to these organisms-impacting their morphology and function. Museum collections are useful in assessing long-term environmental impacts on organisms in a natural multi-stressor environment, where acclimation and adaptation can be considered. Using t

Impacts of Climate Change on Marine Foundation Species.

Marine foundation species are the biotic basis for many of the world's coastal ecosystems, providing structural habitat, food, and protection for myriad plants and animals as well as many ecosystem services. However, climate change poses a significant threat to foundation species and the ecosystems they support. We review the impacts of climate change on common marine foundation species, including corals, kelps, seagrasses, salt marsh plants, mangroves, and bivalves. It is evident that marine foundation species have already been severely impacted by several climate change drivers, often throug

The effect of elevated pCO2 on cadmium resistance of a globally important diatom.

Cadmium (Cd) pollution is a widespread threat to marine life, and ongoing ocean acidification (OA) is predicted to impact bio-toxicity of Cd compounds. However, the cascading effects of changed Cd toxicity to marine primary producers are not well characterized. Here, we studied the impact of OA on Cd toxicity responses in a globally important diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum under both ambient and elevated pCO2 conditions. We found that increased pCO2 alleviated the impact of additive Cd toxicity on P. tricornutum not only under controlled indoor experiments but also in outdoor mesocosm experi

Proteomics analysis reveals the antagonistic interaction between high CO2 and warming in the adaptation of the marine diatom Thalassiosira weissflogii in future oceans.

While it is known that warming and rising CO2 level might interactively affect the long-term adaptation of marine diatoms, the molecular and physiological mechanisms underlying these interactions in the marine diatom Thalassiosira weissflogii on an evolutionary scale remain largely unexplored. In this study, we investigated the changes in metabolic pathways and physiological responses of T. weissflogii under long-term ocean acidification and/or warming conditions (∼3.5 years), integrating proteomics analyses and physiological measurements. Our findings reveal that proteins involved in central

Corrosion Performance of Atmospheric Corrosion Resistant Steel Bridges in the Current Climate: A Performance Review.

Weathering steel (WS) is widely used in bridge construction due to its high corrosion resistance, durability, and low maintenance requirements. This paper reviews the performance of WS bridges in Canadian climates, focusing on the formation of protective patina, influencing factors, and long-term maintenance strategies. The protective patina, composed of stable iron oxyhydroxides, develops over time under favorable wet-dry cycles but can be disrupted by environmental aggressors such as chlorides, sulfur dioxide, and prolonged moisture exposure. Key alloying elements like Cu, Cr, Ni, and Nb enh

Cross-talk between tissues is critical for intergenerational acclimation to environmental change in Acanthochromis polyacanthus.

Organisms' responses to environmental changes involve complex, coordinated responses of multiple tissues and potential parental influences. Here using a multi-tissue approach we determine how variation in parental behavioural tolerance and exposure to elevated CO2 influences the developmental and intergenerational molecular responses of their offspring in the coral reef fish Acanthochromis polyacanthus to future ocean acidification (OA) conditions. Gills and liver showed the highest transcriptional response to OA in juvenile fish regardless of parental OA conditioning, while the brain and live

Long-term warming and acidification interaction drives plastic acclimation in the diatom Pseudo-nitzschia multiseries.

Ocean warming (OW) and acidification (OA) are expected to interactively impact key phytoplankton groups such as diatoms, but the underlying mechanisms, particularly under long-term acclimation, remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the responses of the toxic diatom Pseudo-nitzschia multiseries to combined changes in temperature (20 °C and 30 °C) and CO2 concentration (pCO2 400 μatm and 1000 μatm) using a multi-omics approach over an acclimation period of at least 251 generations. Physiological data suggest that elevated temperature, either alone or in combination with CO2, r

Characterization of a sperm motility signalling pathway in a gonochoric coral suggests conservation across cnidarian sexual systems.

Most stony corals liberate their gametes into the water column via broadcast spawning, where fertilization hinges upon the activation of directional sperm motility. Sperm from gonochoric and hermaphroditic corals display distinct morphological and molecular phenotypes, yet it is unknown whether the signalling pathways controlling sperm motility are also distinct between these sexual systems. Here, we addressed this knowledge gap using the gonochoric, broadcast spawning coral Astrangia poculata. We found that cytosolic alkalinization of sperm activates the pH-sensing enzyme soluble adenylyl cyc

Flavonoids and anthocyanins in seagrasses: implications for climate change adaptation and resilience.

Seagrasses are a paraphyletic group of marine angiosperms and retain certain adaptations from the ancestors of all embryophytes in the transition to terrestrial environments. Among these adaptations is the production of flavonoids, versatile phenylpropanoid secondary metabolites that participate in a variety of stress responses. Certain features, such as catalytic promiscuity and metabolon interactions, allow flavonoid metabolism to expand to produce novel compounds and respond to a variety of stimuli. As marine environments expose seagrasses to a unique set of stresses, these plants display i

The Effects of Microplastics and Additives on Ecosystem Function, Structure, and Signaling.

Microplastics (MPs) and their associated chemical additives are pervasive contaminants whose ecological impacts extend beyond organismal toxicity to fundamentally alter ecosystem processes. We synthesize current understanding of how MPs affect three interconnected dimensions of ecosystem integrity: ecosystem structure, ecosystem function, and ecosystem signaling. Across terrestrial, freshwater, and marine ecosystems, MPs alter biodiversity, community composition, trophic interactions, and habitat complexity, driving cascading changes in food-web architecture. They also impair key ecosystem fun

Effects of elevated carbon dioxide on the hematological parameters of a temperate catshark.

Atmospheric CO2 levels have been rising due to an increase in anthropic activities and its implications over marine ecosystems are unprecedented. The present study focused on the effects of ocean acidification (OA) on key hematological parameters of the juvenile small-spotted catsharks (Scyliorhinus canicula). Eggs were reared throughout the entire embryogenesis (~4 months) plus 5 additional months, in two experimental treatments (control: pCO2  ~ 400 μatm; and high CO2 : pCO2  ~ 900 μatm, Δ -0.3 pH units). After blood collection, the following hematological parameters were evaluated: (a) norm

Trematode infection modulates cockles biochemical response to climate change.

Resulting mainly from atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) build-up, seawater temperature rise is among the most important climate change related factors affecting costal marine ecosystems. Global warming will have implications on the water cycle, increasing the risk of heavy rainfalls and consequent freshwater input into the oceans but also increasing the frequency of extreme drought periods with consequent salinity increase. For Europe, by the end of the century, projections describe an increase of CO2 concentration up to 1120 ppm (corresponding to 0.5 pH unit decrease), an increase in the water

From Population to Individual: Bulk and Single-Cell Analysis Reveal Fe Bioavailability, Limitation Thresholds, and Biological Responses for Marine Diatom Chaetoceros debilis.

In marine ecosystems, Fe fundamentally regulates algal productivity and drives biogeochemical cycling in the hydrosphere, yet its environmental controls and cellular responses remain insufficiently resolved, particularly at the single-cell level. Herein, we combined bulk and single-cell analysis to systematically investigate Fe bioaccumulation process in the marine diatom Chaetoceros debilis under varying Fe species, initial pH, and concentration conditions. Fe bioavailability followed the order Fe-ethylenediaminetetraacetate > Fe-deferoxamine B > Ferrihydrite and decreased with declining init

The Impacts of Global Climate Change and Environmental Security on Fruits and Vegetables-A Policy-Technology Nexus Perspective.

Global climate change exerts a systematic threat to the yield stability, nutritional quality, pest and disease control, and supply chain security of the fruit and vegetable industry via multiple ways, including altering temperature, carbon dioxide concentration, rainfall, ocean acidification, and soil deterioration. To tackle climate change, actions like carbon pricing and low-carbon technologies not only promote emission reduction but also impose pressure and economic difficulties on farmers, producers, logistics, transport, etc. This review, from an integrated view of "policy-technology rela

Long-term imaging of the photosensitive, reef-building coral Acropora muricata using light-sheet illumination.

Coral reefs are in alarming decline due to climate emergency, pollution and other man-made disturbances. The numerous ecosystem services derived from coral reefs are underpinned by the growth and physical complexity of reef-forming corals. Our knowledge of their fundamental biology is limited by available technology. We need a better understanding of larval settlement and development, skeletogenesis, interactions with pathogens and symbionts, and how this biology interacts with environmental factors such as light exposure, temperature, and ocean acidification. We here focus on a fast-growing k
