Injury mechanisms in fatal Australian quad bike incidents.

OBJECTIVES: The ability to determine risk management controls for quad bike use is confounded by limitations in crash and injury information. The aim of this article is to identify the injury mechanisms, crash characteristics, and contributing factors in fatal quad bike incidents in Australia by activity (recreation and work). METHODS: An in-depth case series study was undertaken of 106 Australian quad bike fatalities that had occurred between 2000 and 2013. All case material held by Australian coroners was obtained and reviewed. RESULTS: One hundred and six cases were categorized as occurri

Off-road vehicle ridership and associated helmet use in Canadian youth: an equity analysis.

PURPOSE: In North America, the use of off-road vehicles by young people is increasing, as are related injuries and fatalities. We examined the prevalence of off-road ridership and off-road helmet use in different subgroups of Canadian youth in order to better understand possible inequities associated with these health risk behaviors. METHODS: Data came from Cycle 6 (2009-2010) of the WHO Health Behavior in School-Aged Children Study (HBSC). Participants (n = 26,078) were young people from grades 6-10 in 436 Canadian schools. Students were asked, for a 12-mo recall period, how frequently they

All-terrain vehicle safety in Florida: is legislation really the answer?

Florida is among the nation's leaders in all-terrain vehicle (ATV)-related injuries and fatalities. We hypothesized that patients sustaining injuries while in compliance with ATV laws would demonstrate less severe injury patterns and improved outcomes when compared with noncompliant patients. We reviewed patients treated for ATV-related injuries over a 36-month period. We grouped patients according to conformity with Florida statutes and compared demographics, admission status, injuries sustained, and outcome measures. Three hundred seventy-seven patients were treated for ATV-related injuries.

ATV Accidents continue to be a major public health issue in West Virginia.

All-terrain vehicle (ATV) riding continues to be a major public health problem in West Virginia because the state leads the nation in the rate of deaths from ATV incidents and has significantly higher death rates than all five of the bordering states. Annually, there are 24 deaths a year in West Virginia due to ATV accidents and thousands of nonfatal injuries. Sporting events using ATVs such as motocross racing have added to the burden of caring for patients who are injured in recreational activities. We report a case study of 10 patients treated over an 18-hour period in a state trauma center

Pediatric Traumatic Amputations in the United States: A 5-Year Review.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric traumatic amputations are devastating injuries capable of causing permanent physical and psychological sequelae. Few epidemiologic reports exist for guidance of prevention strategies. The objective of this study is to review the recent trends in pediatric traumatic amputations using a national databank. METHODS: A review of all pediatric (age, 0 to 17 y) amputee patients was performed using the National Trauma Data Bank from 2007 to 2011. Data including demographics, location of amputation, and mechanism of injury were analyzed. RESULTS: In the analysis 2238 patients we

Weekday bicycle traffic and crash rates during the COVID-19 pandemic.

INTRODUCTION: One of the most consequential effects of the COVID-19 lockdowns was a dramatic reduction in travel during peak hours. Transportation modes also shifted-in particular, travel by car became more rare while bicycling saw a resurgence. Given that a typical year sees the most severe bicycle crashes in peak commuter traffic, the shift toward bicycle travel that occurred in 2020 will likely have been accompanied by unique changes in rider behavior (e.g., where and when they choose to ride) as well as the frequency and severity of vehicle-bicycle crashes. METHODS: The current study comp

Rate and Outcomes of TBI among Patients with ATV-Related Injuries: A Hospital-Based Non-Concurrent Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVE: The growing use of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) has resulted in a rise in traumatic injuries, particularly traumatic brain injury (TBI) cases. This study estimated the TBI rate and its association with hospital outcomes among ATV-related admissions at the Puerto Rico Trauma Hospital (PRTH). METHODS: This IRB-approved non-concurrent cohort study of ATV-related admissions at the PRTH from 2000 to 2022 categorized patients based on admission Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) scores into TBI (GCS 3-12) and non-TBI (GCS 13-15) groups. We evaluated sociodemographic characteristics, injury profiles

All-terrain vehicle fatalities on paved roads, unpaved roads, and off-road: Evidence for informed roadway safety warnings and legislation.

OBJECTIVE: All-terrain vehicles (ATVs) are designed for off-highway use only, and many of their features create increased risk with roadway travel. Over half of all ATV-related fatalities occur on roadways, and nonfatal roadway crashes result in more serious injuries than those off the road. A number of jurisdictions have passed or have considered legislation allowing ATVs on public roadways, sometimes limiting them to those unpaved, arguing that they are safe for ATVs. However, no studies have determined the epidemiology of ATV-related fatalities on different road surface types. The objective

Emergency surgery due to go-kart injuries: report of two consecutive cases.

Injury due to go-karting accidents is a new kind of surgical emergency in Turkey and may show variations between patients. There are special details as relate to the design of the vehicles and patient characteristics. We report two seriously injured patients as a result of two different go-kart accidents. Severe intraabdominal hemorrhage due to liver laceration was seen in one patient and mesenteric intestinal avulsion in the other. Both patients were treated surgically and discharged uneventfully.

Blast mines: physics, injury mechanisms and vehicle protection.

Since World War II, more vehicles have been lost to land mines than all other threats combined. Anti-vehicular (AV) mines are capable of disabling a heavy vehicle, or completely destroying a lighter vehicle. The most common form of AV mine is the blast mine, which uses a large amount of explosive to directly damage the target. In a conventional military setting, landmines are used as a defensive force-multiplier and to restrict the movements of the opposing force. They are relatively cheap to purchase and easy to acquire, hence landmines are also potent weapons in the insurgents' armamentarium

Adolescent all-terrain vehicle deaths in West Virginia, 1990-1998.

West Virginia had the third highest number of ATV-related deaths and the highest death rate among all states from 1990-98. Adolescents were identified as a particularly high-risk ATV user group. Fatality data from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission indicated that one-quarter (25 of 101) of the state's ATV-related deaths occurred among children 16 and younger. Only one victim was wearing a helmet at the time of their fatal crash and nearly 70% of the victims were males. The average years of potential life lost was 64.2. WV's adolescent death rate of 0.67 per 100,000 was 5 times higher

[Accident causes and prevention of injuries in Enduro-motorbike sport].

365 participants of the 64. Enduro-World Championship in 1989 reported 232 injuries within a 10-years-period of motorbike driving. The knee was most frequent (21.5 pc., mainly ligament ruptures) injured, followed by fracture of the clavicle (18.5 pc.), hand (15.5 pc.) and damages of the shoulder. Fractures are very common (55.5 pc.) in motorbike sports. Injuries often were produced by collisions with other motorbikes or trees. Driving mistakes, jumps, slipping wheels and overturn were other causes for an accident. During the championship 13 accidents were registered. In a clinical examination

Recreational motor vehicle use and facial trauma.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The use of recreational motorized vehicles (RMVs), including all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), snowmobiles, and go-carts, has increased in recent decades. Because RMVs are lightly regulated, there are numerous safety concerns. This analysis examines a nationally representative resource to estimate the incidence of craniofacial trauma secondary to RMV accidents, evaluating injury and demographic patterns. METHODS: The Consumer Product Safety Commission's National Electronic Injury Surveillance System was examined for facial trauma resulting in emergency department (ED) visits

Pediatric anthropometrics are inconsistent with current guidelines for assessing rider fit on all-terrain vehicles.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: This study sought to establish objective anthropometric measures of fit or misfit for young riders on adult and youth-sized all-terrain vehicles and use these metrics to test the unproved historical reasoning that age alone is a sufficient measure of rider-ATV fit. METHODS: Male children (6-11 years, n=8; and 12-15 years, n=11) were selected by convenience sampling. Rider-ATV fit was quantified by five measures adapted from published recommendations: (1) standing-seat clearance, (2) hand size, (3) foot vs. foot-brake position, (4) elbow angle, and (5) handlebar-to-knee dis
