Public health literature often neglects populations from rural communities, particularly with men who have sex with men (MSM). Although HIV/STI infections are decreasing slightly, there is an increase within rural MSM, thus opening the door for further research on condom use behavior in a rural context. We developed nested PCR protocols and performed a multiyear survey on the prevalence of several protozoan parasites in wild northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) and scaled quail (Callipepla squamata) in the Rolling Plains ecoregion of Texas and Oklahoma (i.e. fecal pellets, bird intestines and blood smears collected between 2010 and 2013). INTRODUCTION: Sexual and/or gender minority young adults (SGM YAs) display high tobacco use rates but less is known regarding disparities among those residing in rural vs. urban areas.
METHODS: Among 609 U.S. SGM YAs (ages 18-25) who completed 2023/2024 surveys, multivariable regressions examined associations of: 1) rurality (vs. urbanicity) with minority stressors (negative behaviors from parents, discrimination, less peer support and SGM community connectedness); and 2) rurality and minority stressors with tobacco use for those assigned female (AFAB) or male (AMAB) at birth, separately.

In this study, we examined the effect of trauma exposure on substance use behaviors, specifically tobacco and alcohol use, in a group of 84 individuals who sought supportive services after the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing.
