The investigation of roentgenograms made after a preliminary contrast study of the elbow joint has shown that traumas may be followed by pathological changes of the cartilaginous tissue, elbow bursa and filling of the fossae of the olecranon and coronary processes by scarry and osseous tissue. The pathological changes mentioned above result in disturbances of the movement of the elbow joint.

We present a patient with osteomyelitis variolosa in both elbow joints with short middle fingers-sequelae of smallpox. Both elbow joints showed sclerosis of bones around elbow joint, enlargement of olecranon process of ulna, and head of radius with intact joint space. Hands showed shortening of both middle fingers following dactylitis leading to short metacarpals. The purpose of this report is to remind those who seldom see one of the most important and easily recognized complications of smallpox.

INTRODUCTION: Olecranon fractures, particularly the Mayo Type 2A two-part fracture, are typically treated with Kirschner wires (K-wires) and tension band wiring. While effective, this method is associated with a high complication risk, leading to reoperations. Recently, new suture fixation techniques have been described that do not involve the insertion of metal. This new technique may mitigate risks associated with K-wires and tension band wiring without impacting healing or function. This study compares the reoperation rate and outcome of suture fixation with traditional tension band wiring.

INTRODUCTION: Treatment for complex olecranon fractures with metaphyseal comminution can be challenging. To improve reduction maneuvers and augment stability, we apply a small medial and/or lateral locking compression plate (LCP) prior to placing a posterior contoured 3.5 mm-2.7 mm LCP. The aim is to describe our technique and outcomes of this "orthogonal" plating technique.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: 26 patients were treated with orthogonal plating. Clinical outcome variables were available for all patients at a median of 27 months (IQR 6-54), and patient-reported outcomes (Q-DASH and MEPS) for 2

BACKGROUND: The financial and resource burden of management of olecranon fractures in the elderly is likely to increase with an aging population. There is limited evidence guiding treatment choice in this cohort. This study aimed to determine whether operative treatment of displaced olecranon fractures in elderly patients provides superior 12-month functional outcomes compared to nonoperative treatment.
METHODS: A multicenter pragmatic randomized controlled trial was conducted across 24 hospitals in Australia and New Zealand. Patients aged ≥75 years presenting with an acute (within 14 days),

BACKGROUND: Trans-olecranon fracture dislocations are the least frequent complex elbow instability. Proper surgical treatment should be performed to avoid postoperative complications.
METHODS: A retrospective design study was performed. Patients that suffered from this injury, treated at our center from 2010 to 2016 were included. Fifteen patients were analyzed. Functional results were measured using DASH, MEPS and VAS scores. Average time from injury to first surgical treatment was 4.87 days. Radial head fracture was present in seven cases and coronoid process in three patients. Most frequen

In patients with an elbow fracture dislocation the incidence of radial head fracture is 36%, where as coronoid process fractures occur in 13%, and olecranon fractures in 4% of patients. Combination of all these fractures with a 'terrible triad' is rarely reported in the literature. We describe a 40 year old lady involved in a polytrauma who had head injury, pnuemothorax and an open fracture dislocation of the left elbow. The Injury Severity Score initially on admission was 44. She presented with chronic elbow instability with pain 1 year later. A semi constrained total elbow arthroplasty (TEA)

Persistent dislocation of the elbow after a fracture of the coronoid process is a difficult problem. We have performed an open reduction with reconstruction of the coronoid by an osteocartilaginous graft from the ipsilateral olecranon for two patients. Both achieved a painless, stable joint with a functional range of movement. The joint surface of the graft has a similar curve to that of the coronoid giving good congruency and stability. The technique is simple and the graft is obtained through the same incision.

BACKGROUND: Olecranon fractures are common and usually treated operatively either by tension band wiring (TBW) or plate fixation (PF). The aim of this study was to assess early complications and reoperations and their predictive factors related to those operative methods.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of all patients with an operatively treated olecranon fracture between 2007 and 2017 at Turku University hospital was performed. Reoperations, postoperative complications, and potential risk factors for these were recorded.
RESULTS: A total of 434 patients (387 TBW and 47 PF) were identifie

BACKGROUND AND AIM OF THE WORK: A bilateral fracture of the olecranon is a rare injury, with only few cases reported in the literature.
METHODS: A single case of bilateral Mayo type II A olecranon fracture in a 88 years old woman is described. A research of all articles regarding simultaneous bilateral olecranon fracture was performed in the PubMed database.
RESULT: The reported case demonstrated good clinical and radiographic results at 5 months follow-up with surgical treatment. The literature search produced other 6 cases in 5 case reports. Except for one case of fatigue fracture that had

BACKGROUND: Despite increased utilization of conservative measures for displaced olecranon fractures in elderly patients, in whom operative fixation may be complicated by coexisting comorbidities and declining bone quality, the noninferiority of nonoperative management has yet to be proven. The purpose of this study was to review nonoperative management of displaced olecranon fractures in the elderly patient population.
METHODS: A literature search of the PubMed database was performed using the term olecranon fracture. Papers included those with results for patients aged 65 years and older pu

BACKGROUND: Several different surgical techniques are used in the treatment of olecranon fractures. Tension band wiring is one of the most preferred options by surgeons worldwide. The concept of this technique is to transform a tensile force into a compression force that adjoins two surfaces of a fractured bone. Currently, little is known about the resulting compression force within a fracture.
OBJECTIVE: Sensor devices are needed that directly transduce the compression force into a measurement quality. This allows the comparison of different surgical techniques. Ideally the sensor devices ou

BACKGROUND: Proximal ulnar fractures have traditionally been fixed with either tension band wiring or plate and screw fixation. These traditional techniques often irritate the surrounding soft tissues, potentially leading to subsequent secondary hardware removal surgeries. Intramedullary proximal ulnar fixation provides similar rigid fixation, however, no review yet exists to support the clinical use of currently available implants.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate the clinical and radiographic short-term outcomes for multiplanar locked intramedullary nails used to treat proximal ulnar fractures.

Some types of implants, such as plates, screws, wires, and nails, have been used for open reduction and internal fixation of olecranon fractures. A ≥ 10 cm longitudinal incision is used for open reduction and internal fixation of olecranon fractures. According to previous studies, tension band wiring is a popular method that gives good results. However, back out of the wires after the surgery is one of the main postoperative complications. Moreover, if the Kirschner wires are inserted through the anterior ulnar cortex, they may impinge on the radial neck, supinator muscle, or biceps tendon. He

We describe the case of a 44-year-old man who presented to the Emergency Department (ED) complaining of pain and swelling over the left elbow of 1-week duration. After olecranon bursal aspiration, synovial fluid analysis yielded an increased white blood cell count (3040 cells/mm(3)) and the presence of bacteria. Culture of the fluid later grew Staphylococcus aureus. The patient was initially treated with oral antibiotics for septic bursitis and returned to the orthopedics clinic for follow-up 2 days later with interval worsening of symptoms. He was subsequently admitted for parenteral antibiot

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The incidence of olecranon fractures is rising. Displaced fractures are usually operated either by tension band wiring or plate fixation. The aim of this review is to evaluate the best current evidence on the management of displaced olecranon fractures.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Randomized controlled trials were systematically gathered in May 2018 from CENTRAL, MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, Scopus, and PEDro databases. The methodological quality of articles was assessed according to the Cochrane Collaboration's domain-based framework. Prospero database registration number: CRD420

BACKGROUND: This anatomic study investigated the distal humeral articular surface exposure achievable through a triceps-sparing oblique extra-articular osteotomy of the olecranon with a step-cut modification compared with the anconeus flap transolecranon apex distal chevron osteotomy. In addition, the bone contact surface areas of the osteotomized surfaces after transolecranon and extra-articular osteotomies were compared.
METHODS: Seven pairs of fresh adult cadaveric elbow joints were examined. Each of the right elbows underwent triceps-sparing extra-articular step-cut olecranon osteotomy (S
