A bibliometric analysis of the research outcome of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Khartoum 2019-2023.

Using two databases, this bibliometric analysis was done for the papers published by the Faculty of Medicine, University of Khartoum (FMUK), from 2019 to 2023. Data were extracted from SCImago for all Sudan, and from PubMed for the publications by FMUK and its associated research centres, the Institute of Endemic Diseases, and the Mycetoma Research Center. The analysis of publications included the count and type of publications, the journals, and national and international collaboration assessment. The publications from FMUK show improvement over time in number and quality, a growth that is si

Transoral robotic surgery for base of tongue neoplasms.

Surgery to the base of tongue (BOT) in the presence of neoplasm is a challenging topic for head and neck surgeons. This area is difficult to access and includes important neurovascular structures such as the hypoglossal nerve and lingual artery. The pivotal role of the tongue base in swallowing makes planning the surgical approach more challenging. The surgical approaches vary from open neck/mandibulotomy to transoral laser surgery (TLS) which have significant disadvantages. After introduction of transoral robotic surgery (TORS) to otolaryngology practice with the da Vinci Surgical system, we

Reverse genetics modification of cytomegalovirus antigenicity and immunogenicity by CD8 T-cell epitope deletion and insertion.

The advent of cloning herpesviral genomes as bacterial artificial chromosomes (BACs) has made herpesviruses accessible to bacterial genetics and has thus revolutionised their mutagenesis. This opened all possibilities of reverse genetics to ask scientific questions by introducing precisely accurate mutations into the viral genome for testing their influence on the phenotype under study or to create phenotypes of interest. Here, we report on our experience with using BAC technology for a designed modulation of viral antigenicity and immunogenicity with focus on the CD8 T-cell response. One appr

Diagnostic yield of gastroscopy in a general surgical unit.

Gastroscopy is the gold standard for investigating upper gastrointestinal complaints. Open access gastroscopy has advantages, but may not always be feasible in a small unit. Our 2-consultant general surgical unit provides gastroscopy on demand for medical and surgical patients. We audited the 499 gastroscopies carried out in our unit in 1997 to assess yield and diagnostic trends. The overall diagnostic yield of 69 per cent was comparable with published data from centres in Ireland and overseas. Diagnostic yield in our series was significantly lower for medical patients (59 per cent) than for s

Clinical outcomes and cost-utility of rotator cuff repair surgery by open and arthroscopic techniques: study protocol for a randomised clinical trial.

INTRODUCTION: Rotator cuff injuries account for up to 70% of pain in the shoulder. However, there remains no consensus on the best surgical treatment for patients with rotator cuff injuries, in terms of the cost-effectiveness and cost-utility of open and arthroscopic methods for rotator cuff repair. The objective of this trial is to compare the efficacy, cost-effectiveness and cost-utility of open and arthroscopic procedures for rotator cuff repair. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The trial is a two-group, parallel-design, randomised controlled trial. A total of 100 patients with symptomatic rotator cu

Randomised, placebo-controlled, double-blinded trial of fecal microbiota transplantation in severe obesity: a study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Obesity is one of the main threats to public health in western countries and increases the risk of several diseases, overall morbidity and mortality. Sustained weight loss will reduce risk factors and improve several obesity comorbidities. Options are conservative treatment such as lifestyle changes, bariatric surgery or medications. Conservative treatment has a low success rate, and bariatric surgery is typically not reversible, with the risk of complications and recurrences. Treatment of obesity with medications has in recent years shown great promise, but the side effects are

Unusual Transformations of Strain-Heightened Oxetanes.

Oxetanes are important motifs for drug discovery and are valuable templates in organic synthesis. Much of their use as synthetic intermediates exploits their inherent strain, often resulting in chain extensions at the expense of the heterocycle. Modifications on the carbon alpha to the oxygen of oxetanes, such as the C═O of β-lactones, extend the modes of reactivity. Nevertheless, the outcomes are still largely predictable. On the other hand, other alpha modifications, such as a ═CH2, a spiro-oxiranyl moiety, or a spiro-cyclopropyl group, increase strain and open pathways not available to simp

Safety of Outpatient Isolated Orbital Floor Fracture Repair.

Orbital fractures are common, accounting for nearly 40% of all facial fractures. Open repair is required to restore preinjury orbital volume and relieve any extra-ocular muscle entrapment. Monitoring for postoperative intraorbital hemorrhage, and its consequent potential for visual impairment, has triggered most surgeons to observe their patients in the hospital overnight postoperatively. The real risk of postoperative hemorrhage in this patient group, however, is uncertain and the need to contain healthcare costs clear. The objective of this study was thus to determine the incidence of emerge

Biologging intelligent Platform (BiP): an integrated and standardized platform for sharing, visualizing, and analyzing biologging data.

Sharing biologging data can facilitate collaborative research and biological conservation by providing maps showing animals' distribution and movements. It is a critical social mission to preserve not only horizontal position data, but also behavioral data such as diving depth, flight altitude, speed, and acceleration, as well as physiological data such as body temperature, along with related metadata, ensuring their preservation for future generation. Moreover, although biologging was initially developed in the field of biology, it now contributes to diverse fields such as meteorology and oce

Surgical treatment of benign osteolytic lesions in the femoral head and neck: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Treatment of benign osteolytic lesions in the femoral head and neck can be extremely challenging, particularly in children with open physis or for aggressive tumors with pathological fracture. There remains the difficult management decision as to whether to perform complete excision of the involved area or only curettage. Moreover, there is no agreed consensus on the optimal approach to lesion access when performing curettage, which included the transcervical, open and direct approach. The current systematic review aims to provide guidance for selection of surgical m

Lesson of the month: neuroendocrine carcinoma of the caecum.

BACKGROUND: Biliary tract injuries are mostly iatrogenic. Related data are limited in developing countries. There are lessons to be learned by revisiting the clinical profiles, management issues and outcome of patients referred to a tertiary care center in Sri Lanka, compared with the previous data from the same center published in 2006. Such a review is particularly relevant at a time of changing global perceptions of iatrogenic biliary injuries. This study aimed to analyze and compare the changes in the injury pattern, management and outcome following biliary tract injury in a Sri Lankan stu

Evaluating Montréal's harm reduction interventions for people who inject drugs: protocol for observational study and cost-effectiveness analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The main harm reduction interventions for people who inject drugs (PWID) are supervised injection facilities, needle and syringe programmes and opioid agonist treatment. Current evidence supporting their implementation and operation underestimates their usefulness by excluding skin, soft tissue and vascular infections (SSTVIs) and anoxic/toxicity-related brain injury from cost-effectiveness analyses (CEA). Our goal is to conduct a comprehensive CEA of harm reduction interventions in a setting with a large, dispersed, heterogeneous population of PWID, and include prevention of SST

The WorldWide Antimalarial Resistance Network Clinical Trials Publication Library: A Live, Open-Access Database of Plasmodium Treatment Efficacy Trials.

Parasite resistance to antimalarial drugs poses a serious threat to malaria control. The WorldWide Antimalarial Resistance Network (WWARN) aims to provide a collaborative platform to support the global malaria research effort. Here, we describe the "WWARN clinical trials publication library," an open-access, up-to-date resource to streamline the synthesis of antimalarial safety and efficacy data. A series of iteratively refined database searches were conducted to identify prospective clinical trials assessing antimalarial drug efficacy with at least 28 days of follow-up. Laparoscopic-assisted pancreatic necrosectomy: A new surgical option for treatment of severe necrotizing pancreatitis.

HYPOTHESIS: Open surgery for pancreatic debridement is often associated with major morbidity such as wound complications, fascial dehiscence, and intestinal fistulae. Hand-assisted laparoscopic surgery (HALS) is useful for complex abdominal procedures since the benefits of traditional laparoscopic surgery are retained. Published experience with HALS for pancreatic debridement is limited to anecdotal case reports. SETTING: University-affiliated private and public hospitals. PATIENTS: Twenty-three patients with necrotizing pancreatitis were evaluated and 19 patients underwent pancreatic debrid

Using a web-based application to define the accuracy of diagnostic tests when the gold standard is imperfect.

BACKGROUND: Estimates of the sensitivity and specificity for new diagnostic tests based on evaluation against a known gold standard are imprecise when the accuracy of the gold standard is imperfect. Bayesian latent class models (LCMs) can be helpful under these circumstances, but the necessary analysis requires expertise in computational programming. Here, we describe open-access web-based applications that allow non-experts to apply Bayesian LCMs to their own data sets via a user-friendly interface. METHODS/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Applications for Bayesian LCMs were constructed on a web server u

Disabled-by-design: effects of inaccessible urban public spaces on users of mobility assistive devices - a systematic review.

PURPOSE: Despite the increase of users of Mobility Assistive Devices (MobAD), there has been a lack of accessibility in urban environments in many parts of the world. We present a systematic review of how the inaccessible design of public spaces affects quality-of-life - including aspects of health and safety, independence, and social participation - of MobAD users. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a literature search in three databases (i.e., Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed) and initially discovered 3980 publications. Osteogenesis imperfecta: clinical diagnosis, nomenclature and severity assessment.

Recently, the genetic heterogeneity in osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), proposed in 1979 by Sillence et al., has been confirmed with molecular genetic studies. At present, 17 genetic causes of OI and closely related disorders have been identified and it is expected that more will follow. Unlike most reviews that have been published in the last decade on the genetic causes and biochemical processes leading to OI, this review focuses on the clinical classification of OI and elaborates on the newly proposed OI classification from 2010, which returned to a descriptive and numerical grouping of five O
