Tracking retinal nerve fiber layer loss after optic neuritis: a prospective study using optical coherence tomography.

INTRODUCTION: Optic neuritis causes retinal nerve fiber layer damage, which can be quantified with optical coherence tomography. Optical coherence tomography may be used to track nerve fiber layer changes and to establish a time-dependent relationship between retinal nerve fiber layer thickness and visual function after optic neuritis. METHODS: This prospective case series included 78 patients with optic neuritis, who underwent optical coherence tomography and visual testing over a mean period of 28 months. The main outcome measures included comparing inter-eye differences in retinal nerve fi

Design of a high-precision fiber-optic sensor based on Tamm plasmon polaritons.

The application of optical fiber sensing structures based on plasmon regulation is hindered in high-precision detection scenarios by issues such as broad spectral full width at half maximum (FWHM), high energy loss, and intricate structural configurations. In this paper, an optical fiber sensing structure based on a Tamm plasmon polariton (TPP) coupling mode is proposed. The proposed design achieves a reflection spectral FWHM of only 2.51 nm and a figure of merit (FOM) of 86.56 RIU-1. For spectral curve demodulation, a hybrid approach combining a residual architecture with the least squares me

Quantification and mitigation of system background fluorescence in fiber-optic-based imaging systems.

Autofluorescence imaging provides a snapshot of tissue biochemistry that can be used to identify dysplastic tissue. However, deployment in multimodal single-fiber imaging systems is limited by system background fluorescence. We propose to improve the signal-to-background ratio (SBR) through the removal of background emission in fiber-optic catheters for autofluorescence and optical coherence tomography. We collected power and spectral measurements of optical components to characterize their emissions using 450 nm excitation. We measured the per-meter fluorescence contribution of single-mode, d

150 MHz polymer resonator for optoacoustic mesoscopy based on a tapered optical fiber.

Optical ultrasound detection enables greater miniaturization than conventional piezoelectric transducers while preserving high sensitivity. Although sub-micron silicon photonics detectors have been demonstrated, image artifacts caused by surface acoustic waves interference remain a key challenge. Polymer detectors offer better acoustic coupling, yet they have been limited to tens of micrometers in size because of optical confinement requirements. Here we overcome that limit with the smallest polymer resonator built on an optical fiber, using a 6 µm thick polymer cavity on a tapered single mode

Research on measurement technology of optical fiber angle sensor based on MEA-BP.

High-voltage disconnectors operate under strong electromagnetic radiation for long periods, making it prone to incomplete opening and closing. Current electronic sensors used to detect their status are susceptible to electromagnetic interference, leading to inaccurate measurement data. Therefore, based on the rotation characteristics of the moving contact during opening and closing, a method for measuring rotation angles in a straight line is proposed. A fiber optic angle sensor is designed according to the characteristics of reflective fiber optics to measure the rotation angle of disconnecto

Dual-resonance optical fiber lossy mode resonance refractive index sensor.

In this paper, we propose a dual-channel surface refractive index sensor based on optical fiber lossy mode resonance (LMR). A multilayer transmission matrix model is constructed to simulate and analyze the optical fiber LMR effect based on two semiconductor oxides, SnO2 and TiO2. Through the rational design of structural parameters, we successfully realize the coexistence of mutually independent LMRs on a single fiber, thereby enabling dual-channel sensing. The dual-channel optical fiber LMR sensor was prepared by electrostatically assembling TiO2 nanofilms and SnO2 nanofilms on the sidewall o

Recovery of germanium from optical fiber industry wastewater using desferroxamine B.

Germanium (Ge) is a critical element whose long-term supply to industry is not assured. Thus, recovery of Ge from secondary sources is important. Siderophores-assisted technology could be a solution for recovery of Ge from secondary sources. However, there are no studies on the interaction of Ge with siderophores and subsequent recovery. In the present study, the interaction of Ge with desferrioxamine B (DFOB) was studied to develop Ge recovery technology from its low-concentrated wastewater. Ge-DFOB complexation was studied under varying pH (1.5-9.0), different anion concentrations (chloride,

Transcutaneous fluorescence spectroscopy: development and characterization of a compact, portable, and fiber-optic sensor.

SIGNIFICANCE: The integrity of the intestinal barrier is gaining recognition as a significant contributor to various pathophysiological conditions, including inflammatory bowel disease, celiac disease, environmental enteric dysfunction (EED), and malnutrition. EED, for example, manifests as complex structural and functional changes in the small intestine leading to increased intestinal permeability, inflammation, and reduced absorption of nutrients. Despite the importance of gut function, current techniques to assess intestinal permeability (such as endoscopic biopsies or dual sugar assays) ar

An Underwater Methane Sensor Based on Laser Spectroscopy in a Hollow Core Optical Fiber.

Existing sensors for measuring dissolved methane in situ suffer from excessively slow response times or large size and complexity. The technology reported here realizes improvements by utilizing a hollow core optical fiber (HFC) as the detection cell in an underwater infrared laser spectrometer. The sensor operates by using a polymer membrane inlet to continuously extract dissolved gas from water. Once inside the sensor, the gas passes through an HCF, within which tunable diode laser spectroscopy is used to quantify methane. The use of an HCF for the optical cell enables advantages of sensitiv

Coupling of photocatalysis and catalysis using an optical fiber textile for room temperature depollution.

Herein, we investigate the interplay between a photocatalyst (TiO2) and a catalyst (Pt/TiO2 and Pt/CeO2) for the oxidation of formaldehyde and toluene at room temperature. A luminous textile is used as support and as light source for the photocatalyst. Our results indicate that the presence of the catalyst and the photocatalyst increases the catalytic performance for the oxidation of formaldehyde, while the photocatalytic performance for toluene oxidation decreases. The overall performance (toluene and formaldehyde degradation) of the system can be optimized with respect to the choice of suppo

Portable fiber-optic SPR platform for the detection of NS1-antigen for dengue diagnosis.

Here, we present a portable, selective and cost-effective fiber-optic surface plasmon resonance (SPR) based platform for early detection of Dengue virus. NS1 protein was targeted as the biomarker of dengue. Antibody-antigen specific binding was exploited for NS1 antigen detection. The binding of antibody was assisted by a self-assembled monolayer of alkanethiols on the surface of silver-coated unclad fiber. A wavelength interrogation mode of SPR was utilized to detect NS1 antigen in the dynamic range of 0.2-2.0 μg/ml. The 40 nm thick silver coated optical fiber exhibited resonance wavelength a

Clinical application of near infrared fiber optic spectroscopy for noninvasive bone assessment.

Approaches for noninvasive bone quality assessment are of great clinical need, particularly in individuals that require close monitoring of disease progression. X-ray measurements are standard approaches to assess bone quality; however, they have several disadvantages. Here, a nonionizing approach for noninvasive assessment of the second metacarpal bone based on near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy was investigated. Transcutaneous bone signal detection was experimentally confirmed with cadaveric hand data, and Monte Carlo modeling further indicated that 50% of the measured signals arise from bone.

Real-time optical fiber sensors based on light diffusing microlens arrays.

The applications of optical fibers are impeded in implantable medical diagnostics due to incompatibility with biological tissues, and immune reaction in vivo. The utilization of biocompatible materials to construct a photonic sensing platform can reduce the immune response in in vivo medical diagnostics. Here, we developed real-time optical fiber sensors to determine the volumetric modulation of stimuli-responsive polymers. Asymmetric microlens structures were replicated on stimuli-sensitive hydrogels as stand-alone sensors and were chemically attached to the tips of silica and biocompatible o

Mobile fiber-optic sensor for detection of oral and cervical cancer in the developing world.

Oral and cervical cancers are a growing global health problem that disproportionately impacts women and men living in the developing world. The high death rate in developing countries is largely due to the fact that these countries do not have the appropriate medical infrastructure and resources to support the organized screening and diagnostic programs that are available in the developed world. Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) with a fiber-optic probe can noninvasively quantify the optical properties of epithelial tissues and has shown the potential as a cost-effective, easy-to-use, and
