Toward a Scalable Linear-Cavity Enhanced Warm-Vapor Photonic Quantum Memory.

The coherent storage, buffering and retrieval of photons in a quantum memory enables the scalable creation of photonic entangled states via linear optics and repeat-until success, unlocking applications in quantum communications and photonic quantum computing. Quantum memories based on off-resonant cascaded absorption (ORCA) in atomic vapors allow this storage to be broadband, noise free, and high efficiency. Here, we implement a cavity-enhanced ORCA memory with reduced footprint and reduced power requirements compared to conventional single-pass schemes. By combining a strong magnetic field w

Comparison of the Error Incurred in the Measurement of Nonblinking, Nonpoint-Source Objects Using Classical and Quantum Imaging.

We present another step in our efforts to expand far-field imaging beyond the diffraction limit and beyond the limitations imposed by fluorescent labels. The model system we examine is based on the exploitation of entangled photon pairs at 810 nm generated by spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC) of a 405 nm source to resolve the separations of the line pairs of a series of two-dimensional objects. A ghost-imaging optical system directs signal and idler photons along two paths, one of which contains the objects. Images are constructed using a covariance analysis of the entangled pairs

Photon Management in Photochemical Synthesis and Reactor Scale-Up.

ConspectusPhotochemical methods have become indispensable in modern organic synthesis by enabling unique reactivities under mild conditions through electron transfer, energy transfer, and other radical-based pathways. In contrast to thermally driven reactions, however, photochemical processes are fundamentally governed by the delivery and utilization of photons. Wavelength, light intensity, photon flux, optical path length, and reactor geometry collectively determine how efficiently photons are absorbed and translated into chemical reactivity. Importantly, increasing light intensity does not n

Bound States in the Continuum for High-Q Light Emission in Photonic-Phononic Nonlocal Metasurfaces.

Thermal radiation is inherently broadband and incoherent, limiting its utility in applications requiring spectral selectivity such as molecular spectroscopy and free-space optical communications. Bound states in the continuum (BICs) provide a powerful route to confine light in open photonic systems and realize resonances with extremely high quality factors. Here we demonstrate high-Q light emission from a photonic-phononic nonlocal metasurface composed of monocrystalline silicon on a 4H-SiC substrate. The platform supports BIC-enabled ultranarrow band emission for both TE and TM polarizations;

Enhanced Third-Order Nonlinear Optics From In Situ Grown Lead-Free Cs2AgInCl6 Double Perovskite Nanocrystals in Chalcogenide Glass.

Metal halide perovskites exhibit significant potential for optoelectronic applications due to their exceptional linear and nonlinear optical properties. However, the lead toxicity, coupled with the inherent thermal and photochemical instability of conventional lead-based perovskites, restricts their utility in nonlinear photonic devices that require high-energy excitation. Lead-free metal halide double perovskites (MHDP), notably Cs2AgInCl6, have emerged as environmentally benign alternatives due to their superior structural stability. Nevertheless, systematic investigations of their third-ord

Sub-100 Femtosecond All-Optical Modulation Beyond Electron-Phonon Limits.

Ultrafast all-optical modulators are central to the advancement of next-generation photonic computing and signal-processing systems. However, the intrinsic electron-phonon relaxation bottleneck in plasmonic materials has long constrained modulation speeds to the picosecond regime, hindering the realization of sub-100 fs modulation. Here, we report a metastructured silver-single-crystal silicon nanodisk antenna that delivers experimentally resolved sub-100 fs all-optical modulation. Distinct from conventional planar metal-semiconductor junctions, the nanodisk architecture spatially co-localizes

Lanthanum Fluorogermanate Glass for Telecom Nonlinear Photonics: fs-Laser-Written Waveguides.

Several rare-earth-based photonic devices rely on materials that combine wide transmission windows, favorable nonlinear properties, high ion solubility, and compatibility with waveguide inscriptions. While silica dominates current technologies, this work investigates a novel trivalent europium-doped lanthanum fluorogermanate glass. Such glasses stand out as promising candidates because of their optical transparency and thermal stability. Nevertheless, the suitability of LFG glasses for waveguide-based all-optical devices remains unclear, as optical parameters governing mode confinement, Kerr r

Non-Close-Packed Isotropic Responsive Magnetic Photonic Crystal Microspheres.

Magnetic photonic crystal microspheres (MPCMs) have emerged as a versatile platform for intelligent sensing and display applications, owing to their integration of magnetic actuation with structural coloration. However, their practical implementation is limited by a fundamental structural constraint: most reported MPCMs adopt anisotropic architectures, resulting in angle-dependent optical responses that require continuous magnetic alignment to maintain uniform coloration. Herein, we propose a different structural paradigm based on non-close-packed, optically isotropic MPCMs. Driven by electros

Radiation-induced ionization effects and space mission requirements for silicon photonic Mach-Zehnder modulators.

Photonic integrated circuits have become essential for meeting the growing global demand for high-capacity information processing and transport. Assessing their radiation tolerance is necessary for deploying systems in radiation prone environments - including in space, high-energy particle accelerators, and defense radiation testing facilities - where the performance and compactness of photonic integrated circuits are increasingly advantageous. This work investigates the analog and digital radio frequency electro-optic performance of Mach-Zehnder modulators (MZMs) subject to 10-keV X-ray irrad

Linear and Nonlinear Spectroscopic Insights Into the Synergistic Solvation of Rhodamine-6G in Methanol-Dichloromethane Binary Solvent Mixture.

This study shows that intermolecular interactions in methanol-dichloromethane (MeOH-DCM) binary solvent mixtures play a crucial role in governing the solvation dynamics of the fluorescent probe rhodamine-6G (R6G). By employing both linear (UV-Vis absorption and steady-state fluorescence) and nonlinear (two-photon-induced fluorescence, TPIF) spectroscopic techniques, we demonstrate that the combined effects of solute-solvent and solvent-solvent interactions significantly modify the local environment around R6G. Methanol, a polar protic solvent, and dichloromethane, a polar aprotic solvent, inte

Functional studies of the kidney of living animals using multicolor two-photon microscopy.

Optical microscopy, when applied to living animals, provides a powerful means of studying cell biology in the most physiologically relevant setting. The ability of two-photon microscopy to collect optical sections deep into biological tissues has opened up the field of intravital microscopy to high-resolution studies of the brain, lens, skin, and tumors. Here we present examples of the way in which two-photon microscopy can be applied to intravital studies of kidney physiology. Because the kidney is easily externalized without compromising its function, microscopy can be used to evaluate vario

Effectiveness of collagen cross-linking induced by two-photon absorption properties of a femtosecond laser in ex vivo human corneal stroma.

This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of two-photon induced collagen cross-linking (CXL) using femtosecond lasers in human corneal stroma. An 800-nm femtosecond laser optical path for CXL was established. Corneal samples that received two-photon induced CXL and ultraviolet-A (UVA) CXL underwent uniaxial stretching experiments, proteolytic resistance assays and observation of collagen fiber structure changes. Two-photon induced CXL can achieve corneal stiffening effects comparable to UVA CXL and showed better advantages at low strains. The cornea after two-photon induced CXL exhibit

Selective filtering of multi-photon events from a single-photon emitter.

Single-photon purity is one of the most important key metrics of many quantum states of light. For applications in photonic quantum technologies, e.g. quantum communication and linear optical quantum computing, a minimization of the multi-photon error rate is required because of its error-introducing nature. Ultimately, the purity of state-of-the-art single-photon sources was found to be limited by spontaneous emission and subsequent reexcitation during the interaction with the driving field. Here, we demonstrate that even this fundamental limit to the single-photon purity can be overcome due

Engineering the refractive index of three-dimensional photonic crystals through multilayer deposition of CdS films.

Woodpile photonic crystals are amongst the preferred candidates for the next generation of photonics components. However, the photocurable resists used to produce them still lack the optical properties (high-n, non-linearity) suitable for photonics applications. A chemical bath deposition protocol has been adapted to deposit high-n/non-linear chalcogenide CdS on the surface of Ormocer woodpiles. The deposition parameters have been adjusted to obtain heterogeneous growth of CdS layers on the Ormocer surface. The layers shift the photonic band-gap and increase its amplitude by more than 15%. Nanoparticle Deep-Subwavelength Dynamics Empowered by Optical Meron-Antimeron Topology.

Optical meron is a type of nonplanar topological texture mainly observed in surface plasmon polaritons and highly symmetric points of photonic crystals in the reciprocal space. Here, we report Poynting-vector merons formed at the real space of a photonic crystal for a Γ-point illumination. Optical merons can be utilized for subwavelength-resolution manipulation of nanoparticles, resembling a topological Hall effect on electrons via magnetic merons. In particular, staggered merons and antimerons impose strong radiation pressure on large gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), while focused hot spots in ant

Wavelength-converted/selective waveguiding based on composition-graded semiconductor nanowires.

Compact wavelength-sensitive optical components are desirable for optical information processing and communication in photonic integrated system. In this work, optical waveguiding along single composition-graded CdS(x)Se(1-x) nanowires were systematically investigated. Under a focused laser excitation, the excited light can be guided passively along the bandgap-increased direction of the nanowire, keeping the photonic energy of the guided light almost unchanged during the whole propagation. In comparison, the excited light is guided actively through incessantly repeated band-to-band reabsorpti
