Dispositional optimism and open-label placebo responses in hair cortisol concentrations and psychological distress-A randomized controlled trial.

Open-label placebo (OLP) treatments show beneficial effects on various health-related outcomes, but studies investigating OLP effects on physiological measures remain scarce. This randomized controlled trial examined the effect of a 4-week OLP intervention on psychological distress and hair cortisol concentrations (HCC) in 202 healthy university students preparing for mandatory oral exams and whether dispositional optimism moderates the OLP effects. Participants were randomly assigned to an OLP or control group. Psychological distress was repeatedly assessed via negative affect, test anxiety,

Hope, optimism, and self-efficacy predicting mental health and illness in a community sample exposed to Hurricane Harvey.

In 2017, Hurricane Harvey flooded more than 300,000 buildings causing an estimated $125 billion in damages and resulting in 68 deaths (National Hurricane Center). This actual or threatened loss of life and physical harm led many to report negative effects on mental well-being and greater mental illness. However, many individuals have been able to experience similar adverse events without a significant negative impact on their mental health and well-being. Positive thinking factors such as hope, optimism, and self-efficacy have been proposed as protective factors in the face of difficult life e

Optimism and life events as predictors of fear appraisals in mothers of children undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

Although mothers' fear appraisals about their child's future health and well-being affect their own psychological adjustment to their child's hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), little is known about antecedents of maternal fear appraisals. This longitudinal study investigated several potential antecedents of these fear appraisals: maternal optimism, recent negative life events, lifetime history of traumatic events, and medical characteristics of the child's disease and HSCT course. One hundred-forty mothers were interviewed during their child's hospitalization for HSCT and at 3-an

Relationship of optimism, knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs to use of HIV antibody testing by at-risk female adolescents.

This study's purpose was to examine the extent to which optimism, knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs predict use of HIV testing services in a group of at-risk female adolescents. We prospectively interviewed 124 consecutive girls engaging in risky behaviors before regularly scheduled pediatric clinic appointments at a large urban HMO. Subjects completed a self-report questionnaire assessing optimism (Scheier's Life Optimism Test, or LOT), HIV-related knowledge, beliefs, and behaviors before their regular visit. At the visit, they were counseled about risky behaviors and the availability of conf

Framing artificial intelligence in Chilean digital press before and after the launch of ChatGPT: From concern to optimism.

This article examines the evolution of AI framing in Chilean national digital media before and after the launch of ChatGPT in 2022. Through topic modeling and emotion analysis of 1,466 articles published by six media outlets over periods that begin between 2000 and 2014, depending on the outlet, and extend in all cases until 2024, this study identifies significant thematic and affective changes. In the pre-ChatGPT period, coverage combined recognition of AI's capabilities with concerns regarding labor displacement, governance, and human identity, frequently referencing global corporations and

Recent personal and vicarious experience with COVID-19 affects personal, but not comparative optimism: a large longitudinal study.

We examined whether personal and vicarious experience with COVID-19 entails change in personal and comparative optimism (the belief that one is less at risk for hazards than others, also known as unrealistic optimism, optimistic bias, or illusion of unique invulnerability) in a large (N ≈ 5000) 5-Wave longitudinal study conducted in Belgium in December 2020-May 2021. Participants reported their experience with COVID-19 as well as their expectations concerning the likelihood that they and the average peer would get infected and, after an infection, would suffer severe disease or rather register

People Living with HIV in Japan Exhibit Situation-Specific Optimism Regarding the Progression to Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS).

Optimistic thought regarding one's own future is said to be an adaptive and mentally healthy personality. Except for dispositional optimism, some situation-specific optimistic expectations have been observed as a psychological adjustment when people are faced with threatening events, such as disease. In this study, we examined the development of an optimistic prospect for AIDS with people living with HIV under antiretroviral therapy in Japan. Participants rated relative probabilities of how likely they, compared to others who were in similar circumstances including HIV diagnosis, might have on

Challenges in international investigator-led rare disease clinical trials and the case for optimism in inclusion body myositis.

Classical bovine spongiform encephalopathy is a transmissible prion disease that is fatal to cattle and is a human health risk due to its association with a strain of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD). Mutations to the coding region of the prion gene (PRNP) have been associated with susceptibility to transmissible spongiform encephalopathies in mammals including bovines and humans. Additional loci such as the retinoic acid receptor beta (RARB) and stathmin like 2 (STMN2) have also been associated with disease risk. The objective of this study was to refine previously identified regions associat

This study analyzed effects of savoring on unstudied positive mindset targets of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) treatment (ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT05040061). 85 students with GAD were randomly assigned to one of two ecological momentary interventions (EMIs) on smartphone for seven days. The SkillJoy EMI promoted practices for savoring positive emotions. An active control EMI mirrored SkillJoy, yet did not include savoring or positive emotion. Optimism, worry, kill-joy thinking (lessening positive emotion with cognition), and prioritization of positive emotion activities and goals were asses

Media Exposure to Armed Conflict: Dispositional Optimism and Self-Mastery Moderate Distress and Post-Traumatic Symptoms among Adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Rapid technological developments enable the immediate transmission of armed conflict events through a variety of media channels, inducing mass anxiety, fear, and helplessness. Youth are particularly vulnerable and face new challenges as a result of this exposure. The effects of media exposure to such events on psychological distress and post-traumatic symptoms were examined. METHODS: A total of 161 participants aged 13-18 years completed a questionnaire battery that included measures of media exposure to armed conflict events, previous direct exposure to armed conflict events, psy

The effect of state and trait power on financial risk-taking: The mediating and moderating roles of optimism.

The research aimed to further develop knowledge on the mechanisms that enhance risk-taking propensities among powerful people. Three studies (N1 = 328, N2 = 388, N3 = 267) investigated the role of optimism in the relationship between sense of power and financial risk-taking, controlling for the state of power. Study 1, correlational, analyzed whether the relationship between sense of power and risky financial choices is serially mediated by general optimism and financial risk perception. The results confirmed the initial hypotheses. The second, experimental, study investigated the role of stat

Somatopause, weaknesses of the therapeutic approaches and the cautious optimism based on experimental ageing studies with soy isoflavones.

The pathological phenomenon of somatopause, noticeable in hypogonadal ageing subjects, is based on the growth hormone (GH) production and secretion decrease along with the fall in GH binding protein and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) levels, causing different musculoskeletal, metabolic and mental issues. From the perspective of safety and efficacy, GH treatment is considered to be highly controversial, while some other therapeutic approaches (application of IGF-1, GH secretagogues, gonadal steroids, cholinesterase-inhibitors or various combinations) exhibit more or less pronounced weakne

Examining social support, rumination, and optimism in relation to binge eating among Caucasian and African-American college women.

PURPOSE: Binge eating is a significant concern among college age women-both Caucasian and African-American women. Research has shown that social support, coping, and optimism are associated with engaging in fewer negative health behaviors including binge eating among college students. However, the impact of sources of social support (i.e., support from family, friends, and a special person), rumination, and optimism on binge eating as a function of race/ethnicity has received less attention. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between social support, rumination, and optimi
