Ventral Transorbital Apicoectomy of the Maxillary Second and Third Molar Teeth in Guinea Pigs (Cavia porcellus): 26 Cases.

A common cause of teeth malocclusion and feeding disorders in guinea pigs is macrodontia and odontogenic abscesses. If the maxillary second or third molar teeth are affected, surgical access to them has so far been achieved through enucleation or orbital evisceration due to their location at the base of the orbit. The study aims to demonstrate a transorbital surgical approach to the apices of the maxillary molar teeth (M2 and M3) in guinea pigs, allowing preservation of the eye. Twenty six apicoectomies of maxillary M2 and M3 were performed. The surgical approach involved a skin incision above

Adult onset retinoblastoma: A diagnostic dilemma.

Retinoblastoma is the most common intraocular tumor of childhood. About 95% of retinoblastoma cases are diagnosed before the age of 5 years. Not more than 30 cases of Adult-onset retinoblastoma have been reported in literature. A 32 year old male presented with a painful blind eye. There was sudden loss of vision accompanied by severe pain and redness in right eye about 1 year ago, for which some surgery was done with neither a gain in vision nor any relief from pain. Then he was put on maximum tolerable medical therapy, later cyclocryotherapy was done. Now he presented to us with complains of

Orbital myiasis: case report.

BACKGROUND: Orbital myiasis cases are very rare worldwide. We are reporting this case caused by Hypoderma bovis because invasive parasitic larvae can cause massive destruction. CASE: An 85-year-old female patient was admitted to the Department of Ophthalmology of the Dicle University School of Medicine with the complaint of a wound in her right eye for over one year. Larvae had been in the same eye for one week. OBSERVATIONS: The clinical examination showed no light perception in her right eye. The eyelid was thickened and there was a necrotic lesion 3 x 4 cm in diameter, invading inferiorly

Medial sural artery perforator flap following orbital exenteration.

An extended orbital exenteration defect in a male in his mid-80s was successfully reconstructed with a medial sural artery perforator flap. To our knowledge, this flap has not been described in the literature for such defects until now. While it may require meticulous intramuscular perforator dissection, it provides several advantages; it is thin, pliable, has a long pedicle of large calibre facilitating microanastomosis and provides adequate coverage where the amount of chimeric muscle can easily be tailored to the defect's surface area and volume. In addition, its robust vascular supply can

[Reconstruction of orbital exenteration defects: about 20 cases].

The face is social support. Eyes allow the individual to interact with the environment and others. Orbital exenteration defects are the results of extreme disfiguring surgery, leading to functional, aesthetic and psychological sequelae. Reconstruction is essential and must meet several objectives: filling the cavity and closing any communications with the adjacent structures, obtaining rapid healing, allowing for local monitoring and finally enabling patients to reintegrate into society and achieve a satisfactory quality of life. We here present our experience in filling and reconstructing the

Osteoradionecrosis of the exenterated orbit.

Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) occurs in an estimated 2% of head and neck-irradiated patients. It is seen most commonly in the mandible with other reported sites including the maxilla, temporal bone, clavicle, and vertebrae. It is defined as an area of exposed devitalised irradiated bone, with failure to heal during a period of at least 3 months, in the absence of local neoplastic disease. We report 2 cases of ORN following postoperative radiotherapy given to patients who had undergone an orbital exenteration. ORN can develop spontaneously in one-third of cases, although in the majority of patients,

Poor prognoses of open globe injuries with concomitant orbital fractures.

PURPOSE: Orbital trauma, particularly with open globe injury, can have a wide range of visual outcomes, which can be difficult to predict at presentation. Clinical features on presentation may provide insight into visual prognosis. We hypothesized that patients with open globe injuries and concomitant orbital fractures have poorer visual outcomes than patients without orbital fractures. METHODS: We reviewed the charts of 77 patients with isolated open globe injuries (OG) and 76 patients with open globe injuries and concomitant orbital fractures (OGOF). Multivariate regression analysis was per

Successful chemical ablation of an intraorbital cyst caused by an eyelid injury and iatrogenic ankyloblepharon formation in a duck.

CASE DESCRIPTION A client-owned 2-year-old 1.8-kg (4-lb) male pet Rouen duck (Anas platyrhynchos domesticus) was evaluated because of severe swelling around the left eye following traumatic injury to the upper and lower eyelids and 2 associated surgeries that resulted in the removal of the entire upper and lower eyelid margins. CLINICAL FINDINGS At initial evaluation, ankyloblepharon of the left eye was observed, with no upper or lower eyelid margins and a large, round, fluctuant subcutaneous mass over the left orbit. Orbital exploration and histologic examination revealed a benign cyst consis

Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic was associated with an increased incidence of mucormycosis globally. However, the clinical pattern, epidemiologic features and risk factors for adverse outcomes are not well established. Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis of the data from patients hospitalized with proven mucormycosis between April 2021 and August 2021. Patients were managed with a multi-disciplinary approach involving medical, surgical, and comorbidity treatment. The clinical presentation, management details, complications and outcomes, including mortali

Acellular Dermal Substitutes for Lining the Exenterated Orbit-A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Clinical Outcomes.

Orbital exenteration reconstruction remains a major reconstructive challenge because of the orbit's complex anatomy and its close relationship with the paranasal sinuses, which predispose patients to delayed healing. Traditional approaches, such as secondary intention healing or split-thickness skin grafting, may result in prolonged epithelialization and can compromise timely prosthetic rehabilitation. Acellular dermal matrices (ADM) have emerged as biological scaffolds that provide immediate coverage of the defect while preserving an open orbital cavity suitable for prosthetic fitting. A syst

Clinical time course of the neglected giant sebaceous gland carcinoma.

In this report, we discussed the progression from the initial presentation until surgical intervention, clinical course, and devastating outcome of a neglected giant sebaceous gland carcinoma of the eyelid in a poorly compliant elderly patient. A 79-year-old woman was referred for treatment of a giant ulcero-nodular lesion in the right upper eyelid. Nine months before, an orange lesion arising from the tarsal conjunctiva in the upper eyelid was observed in her examination undergone in the healthcare center where she initially presented, and the cornea appeared transparent. Surgical excision wa
