The Effect of Mental Rotation on Surgical Pathological Diagnosis.

PURPOSE: Pathological diagnosis involves very delicate and complex consequent processing that is conducted by a pathologist. The recognition of false patterns might be an important cause of misdiagnosis in the field of surgical pathology. In this study, we evaluated the influence of visual and cognitive bias in surgical pathologic diagnosis, focusing on the influence of "mental rotation." MATERIALS AND METHODS: We designed three sets of the same images of uterine cervix biopsied specimens (original, left to right mirror images, and 180-degree rotated images), and recruited 32 pathologists to

T-cell receptor gamma delta-positive peripheral T-cell lymphomas presenting in the skin: a clinical, histological and immunophenotypic study.

Examination of biopsy samples from 62 patients with--or with suspected--cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL) revealed 2 cases in which the neoplastic cells were positive for the T-cell receptor (TCR) gamma delta complex. One patient had mycosis fungoides and 1 patient had a pleomorphic lymphoma of medium and large-cell type. Both cases showed aggressive courses with dissemination to internal organs and short survival times. The phenotypic examination showed that the neoplastic cells were positive with TCR delta 1, CD3, CD25, CD29, CD45R0 and CD54. No staining was seen with antibodies against frame

Primary Intraosseous Cavernous Hemangioma of the Petrous Bone Involving the Jugular Fossa Mimicking a Jugular Paraganglioma: A Radiologic-Pathologic Correlation and Review of Relevant Literature.

Primary intraosseous cavernous hemangioma (PICH) is a rare benign vascular tumor that predominantly involves the vertebral column and calvarium, while skull base involvement, particularly the jugular fossa, is exceptionally uncommon. We report a histopathologically confirmed PICH centered in the petrous temporal bone showing jugular fossa and jugular foraminal involvement, radiologically mimicking a jugular paraganglioma. A 46-year-old man presented with progressive unilateral sensorineural hearing loss. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated a heterogeneously enhancing jugular foramen

When one becomes many: a pediatric case of extensive multilevel spinal extradural arachnoid cysts challenging diagnostic paradigms. Illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Spinal extradural arachnoid cysts (SEACs) are rare, typically solitary lesions. Multilevel SEACs are exceptionally uncommon. This report highlights a pediatric case of extensive thoracic SEACs, emphasizing their potential for rapid neurological decline and the importance of early recognition in atypical spinal cord compression. OBSERVATIONS: A 13-year-old female presented with progressive myelopathy due to multilevel SEACs (C7-L2), challenging the notion of SEACs as usually solitary. Imaging revealed severe cord compression (flattened to < 2 mm at T4-7). Surgical intervention (lam

Preserving Sample, Interface, and Signal Fidelity in Wearable Sweat Electrolyte Monitoring During Exercise.

Sweat electrolytes, including Na+, K+, and Cl-, provide dynamic information on exercise-induced fluid and electrolyte regulation. Wearable ion-selective electrode (ISE) platforms now enable continuous, in situ monitoring of these ions, but performance in standard solutions does not guarantee reliable on-body data. During exercise, measurement distortion can arise before sweat contacts the electrode, at the electrochemical interface, and during signal acquisition and interpretation. This review synthesizes these coupled distortion pathways through a three-layer fidelity framework. Sample fideli

A systematic imaging approach to pathology within the retroperitoneal space.

Retroperitoneal diseases encompass a broad and heterogeneous spectrum, ranging from benign conditions to aggressive malignancies. Clinical presentation is often nonspecific, and physical examination is limited by the deep location of the retroperitoneum. Consequently, cross-sectional imaging-primarily computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-is central to detection, characterization, and staging, playing a key role in guiding management and surgical planning. Imaging evaluation is challenging due to overlapping appearances, difficulty determining the site of origin and ext

Embryonic signals mediate extracellular vesicle biogenesis and trafficking at the embryo-maternal interface.

BACKGROUND: Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are membrane-coated nanoparticles secreted by almost all cell types in living organisms. EVs, as paracrine mediators, are involved in intercellular communication, immune response, and several reproductive events, including the maintenance of pregnancy. Using a domestic animal model (Sus scrofa) with an epitheliochorial, superficial type of placentation, we focused on EV biogenesis pathway at the embryo-maternal interface, when the embryonic signaling occurs for maternal recognition and the maintenance of pregnancy. RESULTS: Transmission electron micros

Various forms of tissue damage and danger signals following hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation.

Hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation (HSCT) is the most potent curative therapy for many malignant and non-malignant disorders. Unfortunately, a major complication of HSCT is graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), which is mediated by tissue damage resulting from the conditioning regimens before the transplantation and the alloreaction of dual immune components (activated donor T-cells and recipient's antigen-presenting cells). This tissue damage leads to the release of alarmins and the triggering of pathogen-recognition receptors that activate the innate immune system and subsequently the adapt

Cleavage of polypeptide chain initiation factor eIF4GI during apoptosis in lymphoma cells: characterisation of an internal fragment generated by caspase-3-mediated cleavage.

Polypeptide chain initiation factor eIF4GI undergoes caspase-mediated degradation during apoptosis to give characteristic fragments. The most prominent of these has an estimated mass of approximately 76 kDa (Middle-Fragment of Apoptotic cleavage of eIF4G; M-FAG). Subcellular fractionation of the BJAB lymphoma cell line after induction of apoptosis indicates that M-FAG occurs in both ribosome-bound and soluble forms. Affinity chromatography on m7GTP-Sepharose shows that M-FAG retains the ability of eIF4GI to associate with both the mRNA cap-binding protein eIF4E and initiation factor eIF4A and

Etiology of Bilateral Thalamic Infarction: Identifying Occlusion of the Percher Artery.

Bilateral thalamic infarction denotes ischaemic-hypoxic necrosis of cerebral tissue in both thalamic regions due to compromised blood supply, constituting a distinct subtype of ischaemic cerebrovascular disease. Its clinical presentation is complex yet characteristic. Core manifestations include acute impaired consciousness, marked cognitive decline with memory deficits, vertical gaze palsy, and somnolence. Imaging studies reveal that the primary pathogenesis involves vascular anomalies in the perforating arteries supplying the bilateral parahypothalamic midline regions. These arteries frequen

A Rare Case of Multi-Organ Complications Due to Disseminated Citrobacter koseri Infection Originating From a Renal Abscess.

Citrobacter koseri is a gram-negative bacillus that can cause severe infections in immunocompromised individuals. While it is a rare urinary tract pathogen, its potential for dissemination and severe complications demands attention. We report the case of a 44-year-old male with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes mellitus who developed a disseminated C. koseri infection originating from a perirenal abscess. The infection extended locally, resulting in septic thrombosis of the left renal vein, and spread distantly, causing septic pulmonary embolism. The patient underwent multiple surgical interve

Toll-like receptors and their role in gastrointestinal disease.

The innate immune response to invading pathogens is centred upon a family of non-clonal, germline-encoded pattern recognition receptors (PRRs), the Toll-like receptors (TLRs). These provide specificity for a vast range of microbial pathogens, and offer an immediate anti-microbial response system. Thirteen mammalian TLRs have been described; 10 are expressed in humans, each responsible for the recognition of distinct, invariant microbial structures originating from bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoa. The two most thoroughly studied are TLR4 and TLR2, the PRRs for Gram-negative and Gram-posit

Host Adaptive Evolution of Avian-Origin H3N2 Canine Influenza Virus.

Since its first isolation in around 2007, the avian-origin H3N2 canine influenza virus (CIV) has become established and continues to circulate in dog populations. This virus serves as a useful model for deciphering the complex evolutionary process of interspecies transmission of influenza A virus (IAV) from one species to its subsequent circulation in another mammalian host. The present investigation is a comprehensive effort to identify and characterize genetic changes that accumulated in the avian-origin H3N2 CIV during its circulation in the dog. We revealed that H3N2 CIV experiences greate

Kaposi's Sarcoma-Associated Herpesvirus Genome Replication, Partitioning, and Maintenance in Latency.

Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) is thought to be an oncogenic member of the γ-herpesvirus subfamily. The virus usually establishes latency upon infection as a default infection pattern. The viral genome replicates according to the host cell cycle by recruiting the host cellular replication machinery. Among the latently expressing viral factors, LANA plays pivotal roles in viral genome replication, partitioning, and maintenance. LANA binds with two LANA-binding sites (LBS1/2) within a terminal repeat (TR) sequence and is indispensable for viral genome replication in latency. The

Topical steroid withdrawal: a serious, under-recognised skin condition.

Topical steroid withdrawal (TSW) is a serious and often under-recognised dermatological condition. It is an adverse reaction to prolonged use of topical corticosteroids (TCS), which may occur following tapering or sudden cessation of treatment. TCS are widely used in the therapeutic management of various dermatological conditions, demonstrating notable efficacy in treating conditions such as atopic eczema and psoriasis. However, it is now recognised that prolonged use of TCS can lead to the development of TSW. TSW is characterised by the skin's dependence on exogenous steroids, with symptoms e

Research on soybean leaf disease recognition in natural environment based on improved Yolov8.

The rapid and accurate identification of soybean diseases is critical for optimizing both yield and quality. Traditional image recognition techniques face notable limitations in terms of generalization and accuracy, particularly when tasked with identifying small-scale targets or distinguishing diseases with similar characteristics in large, heterogeneous, and complex environments. To address these challenges, this study proposes the YOLOv8-DML model for soybean leaf disease recognition. Building upon YOLOv8n, this model integrates a DWR module that replaces the high-level C2f module with C2f-
