Approximately 10% of US adults experience elder abuse, which often manifests as musculoskeletal and soft tissue injuries. The goal of our study was to determine the rate of elder abuse among orthopedic surgery patients and characterize which patients may be at an increased risk. National Inpatient Sample Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project data from 2001 to 2015 were parsed with the Clinical Classifications Software tool. Patients 60 years and older were identified by International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision (ICD-9), code for elder abuse. Primary orthopedic procedures and s

Additive manufacturing also known as three-dimensional printing (3D printing), provided the ability to produce precise three-dimensional structures, representing a rapidly growing field in Orthopaedics. Its clinical value has been attributed to the ability to create complex three dimensional objects with relative ease and at low cost. However, the available evidence regarding its applications in trauma was heterogeneous. This narrative review aimed to analyze the clinical applications of 3D printing in traumatology. Additionally, the research gaps that emerged in our literature search were und

BACKGROUND: Numerous studies have highlighted the inequitable access to medical and psychiatric care that people experiencing homelessness (PEH) face, yet the surgical needs of this population are not well understood. We sought to assess evidence describing surgical care for PEH and to perform a thematic analysis of the results.
METHODS: Ovid MEDLINE, Embase, and Web of Science were searched using the terms "surgery" AND "homelessness." Grey literature was also searched. We used a stepwise scoping review methodology, followed by thematic analysis using an inductive approach.
RESULTS: We incl

INTRODUCTION: During January 2010, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti, resulting in death and destruction for hundreds of thousands of people. This study describes the types of orthopedic procedures performed, the options for patient follow-up, and limitations in obtaining outcomes data in an emergency setting.
PROBLEM: There is not a large body of data that describes larger orthopedic cohorts, especially those focusing on internal fixation surgeries in resource-poor settings in postdisaster regions. This article describes 248 injuries and over 300 procedures carried out in the Médecins

OBJECTIVE: Pectus carinatum is traditionally repaired by using some modification of the open Ravitch procedure, with its possible long-term sequelae, such as poor postoperative compliance of the chest. In this study we assessed our results with a new minimally invasive repair of pectus carinatum that requires neither cartilage incision nor sternotomy.
METHODS: From June 2005, we have corrected pectus carinatum using a method analogous to the Nuss procedure for pectus excavatum repair. Thus far, we performed this intervention on 14 patients (mean age, 15 +/- 1.5 years). A steel bar has been in

Three-dimensional (3D) printing has made the leap from fringe technology to routine in orthopedic surgery. Anatomic models are easily produced from standard imaging. Patient-specific prints for surgical planning, cutting guides, and durable medical equipment now can be produced in-house. Custom patient-specific instrumentation and even implants are now routinely available through commercial suppliers. Advantages include decreasing operative time, reducing radiation exposure, and limiting complications in complex cases. Operating-room savings can easily offset the capital cost of printers. This

BACKGROUND: Achondroplasia is associated with multisystem impairments that may require surgical interventions associated with high complication rates. The orthopaedic treatment landscape in achondroplasia varies globally, with some countries recommending surgical intervention more commonly. Achondroplasia-specific concerns related to preparation and conduct of surgical procedures necessitate careful consideration of treatment options in consultation with a multidisciplinary care team. The International Achondroplasia Forum convened a workshop in October 2024 to develop guiding principles for o

This literary investigation dives into the complex combination of scientific knowledge, creative expertise, surgical skills, and fundamental humanistic qualities that constitute the orthopaedic profession. This poetic perspective conveys the essence of orthopaedic surgery techniques by figuratively describing the processes involved in bone and joint operations and commenting on the meticulous labor that doctors undertake with sinews, sockets, tendons, and bones. It emphasizes the human body's resilience and the restorative power of orthopaedic interventions, depicting how surgeons navigate the
