BACKGROUND: Gorham-Stout disease (GSD) is a very rare disorder characterized by massive osteolysis of poorly understood aetiology. The association between GSD involving the skull base and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage has been reported in the literature. However, few cases of CSF leakage and Chiari-like tonsillar herniation in GSD involving the spine have been reported.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 20-year-old man with GSD involving the thoracic and lumbar spine, which caused CSF leakage and Chiari-like tonsillar herniation. The patient underwent four spinal surgeries for o

Chyle is a sterile, milky fluid consisting of lymph and emulsified fats that is formed in the small intestines and taken up by lymph vessels. Chylous effusions usually occur after destruction or obstruction of lymphatic channels, and chylous joint effusions have been reported in association with rheumatoid and/or septic arthritis, and as the result of penetrating trauma to subsynovial fatty tissue and the intra-articular fat pad. We report a case of bone absorption and lytic change in the femur associated with a chylous hip joint effusion after a total hip arthroplasty (THA) in a patient with

Le Fort III maxillary distraction osteogenesis using the RED system and advancement genioplasty was successfully performed for the midfacial retrusion and to eliminate severe snoring during sleep in a rare case of Hajdu Cheny syndrome. This syndrome is characterized by slowly progressive systemic osseous dysplasia, exhibiting craniofacial disfigurements and other skeletal deformity, but no description is found in a plastic surgical treatment up to now. A rare entity of this syndrome is also presented.

The autosomal recessive multicentric osteolytic disorders of childhood-Torg, Winchester, and François syndromes-predominantly affect the carpal, tarsal, and interphalangeal joints, and their progressive bone loss and crippling arthritic deformities mimic severe juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. In a consanguineous Saudi Arabian family two affected sibs with facial anomalies and short stature displayed a distal arthropathy of the metacarpal, metatarsal, and interphalangeal joints starting in the first few months of life that eventually progressed to the proximal joints and resulted in crippling an

A patient with osteolysis of the right hand after a metatarsal fracture at the age of 12 years is reported. The osteolysis progressed until the age of 21 years and was stable until the age of 59 years, when the patient died from a metastatic colon cancer. The article discusses the clinical, radiographic, and histologic features, and prognosis of idiopathic osteolysis (Gorham-Stout disease). Gorham-Stout disease is characterized by a non-familial, histological benign vascular proliferation producing lysis of the bone. The therapeutic options of Gorham-Stout disease is limited; radiotherapy has

Skin changes associated with carpal tunnel syndrome have rarely been reported. A 60-year-old patient was referred to our Department of Dermatology for evaluation of an aseptic gangrene of the distal phalanx of the third finger of her left hand, progressive nail dystrophy, sclerodactylia and spontaneous ulcerations. These features were seen on the digits with sensory supply from the median nerve. The patient had hand paresthesias for at least 10 years. No abnormal results were found in biochemical, hematological or immunological determinations. An echo-Doppler study of the upper limbs was norma

Two unrelated children with a severe form of juvenile hyaline fibromatosis are described. In addition to painful flexion contractures of all of the large joints, oral and skin lesions, and typical radiologic appearance of osteolytic defects, both girls had marked growth retardation and recurrent infections. Both children died in early infancy of overwhelming infection.

The Hajdu-Cheney syndrome or acro-osteolysis syndrome is a rare disease. Only 18 well-documented cases are described in the literature. Presentation of cases in the oral surgical literature is rare. The syndrome is characterized by dissolution of terminal phalanges of the hands and feet, dolichocephaly, open cranial sutures, multiple wormian bones, absence of frontal sinuses, wide open sella turcica, progressive basilar invagination, early loss of teeth, short stature and characteristic facies. Inheritance is most likely autosomal dominant. 3 patients are presented, 2 of them are mother and so

An 89-year-old woman presented with stiffness in her shoulders. X-ray showed bilateral absence of the humeral head. MRI showed destruction of the humeral head, with the cavity filled with fluid and soft tissue proliferation. Suspected for Milwaukee shoulder or Gorham-stout disease.

Gorham-Stout disease (GSD) is a very rare disease characterized by increased bone erosion with angiomatous proliferation. The mechanisms underlying this disorder have not been deeply investigated. Due to its rarity, no guidelines are currently available for treatment and management of GSD. We recently evaluated the cellular alterations of the bone remodeling in patients showing that osteoclast precursors displayed increased ability to differentiate into osteoclasts and that affected osteoclasts resorb bone more actively than control cells. Moreover, osteoblasts isolated from a patient showed a

Gorham-Stout disease is a rare bone resorption disease, the etiology and prognosis of which is uncertain but it is thought to be benign. It can involve one or more bones and can cause pain, swelling, deformity and fractures in affected bones. Diagnosis is made with a combination of clinical, radiological and histopathological examinations once other causes of osteolysis have been excluded. Due to its rarity, there is no standard therapeutic approach.

The most conspicuous element of Gorham's disease is its radiographic features, wherein massive disappearance of the mandible is observed. We report a case of an adolescent boy with massive osteolysis of the mandible in whom the diagnosis of Gorham's disease was made. A 14-year-old boy was referred to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre, Kuala Lumpur, for the management of a massive mandibular deformity. He was diagnosed with a hemangioma-like lesion at 1 year of age. The disease had progressed for an unknown number of years. Plain X-r

Gorham disease (also referred to as vanishing bone disease or idiopathic massive osteolysis) is a rare skeletal condition that results in the localized replacement of bone with angiomas and fibrosis. The etiology and most effective treatment for this nonhereditary condition remain controversial in the medical literature. To our knowledge, we present the first case of post-traumatic Gorham disease that includes MR imaging (before and after radiation therapy), post-radiation CT with evidence of treatment effect (sclerosis), as well as asymptomatic bilateral renal lymphangiomata.

Gorham's massive osteolysis is one of the five classical types of idiopathic osteolysis. The femoral localisation is rare. The diagnosis is based on anamnestic data (non-hereditary), on biochemical data (absence of nephropathy), on radiographical data (progressive monocentric osteolysis without periosteal reaction), and on histological data (intraosseous angiomatosis with either capillaries or lymph vessels, or both; eventually fibrosis). Nowadays, treatment mostly consists of amputation or arthroplasty, combined with radiotherapy. Spontaneous arrest of the disease occasionally occurs, but thi

Gorham's disease is described as a rare form of massive non-familiar idiopathic osteolysis with a self-limiting nature, where the simil-angiomatous tissue destroys the bone, that is substituted by fibrous tissue. One case of Gorham's disease is presented, that is interesting because of the sites in which the pathology is localized and because of its multicentricity. The authors reached a diagnosis by carefully studying clinical and laboratory evidence as well as imaging and anatomo-histopathological findings, confirmed by the data reported in the literature.
