Prevalence and diversity of gastro-intestinal nematode infections in British cattle and implications for biosecurity.

Gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) can impact on cattle health and welfare as well as cause economic losses associated with lower productivity but are often overlooked by farmers as a sub-clinical issue. Infections are routinely controlled with prophylactic use of anthelmintics but resistance to the available products has been reported. The prevalence of anthelmintic resistance (AR) in cattle GIN is advancing in certain species, making control more challenging. This study shows the current prevalence and diversity of GIN populations in British commercial cattle herds and the extent of infection

Seasonal patterns of faecal egg counts and gastrointestinal nematode species composition in Scottish dairy calves.

Gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) infections impact livestock production globally. In pasture-based systems, GIN infections are ubiquitous, typically comprising co-infections with several different species within a single host. Nematode species vary in their epidemiology, pathogenicity, and anthelmintic sensitivity, which in turn can be influenced by weather, host factors, and management practices. The epidemiology of parasitic gastroenteritis in young cattle in temperate regions has been thoroughly researched. However, many studies were conducted more than fifty years ago, before the advent of

Gastrointestinal parasitic worm burdens and efficacy of deworming practices in growing beef cattle grazing California pastures.

Treatment for enteric parasites is a common practice in beef cattle, yet little data is known about the prevalence of nematode and trematode parasite infections in beef cattle in the western United States. Likewise, the data on the efficacy of deworming practices and the presence of anthelmintic resistance (AR) of these parasites in this region is sparse. The current study collected evidence for the presence of nematode and trematode parasites in 18 herds of young beef cattle grazing either dryland or irrigated pasture in northern California as well as on efficacy and evidence of AR in a subgr

[A comparative analysis of various antigenic proteins found in Haemonchus contortus--a review].

Many innovative researches on the development and introduction of recombinant vaccines against many economically important parasites were carried out in the 20th century. Research continues to hold promise with the development of immunological and molecular approaches for control of these parasites and in this regard it has already been seen that blood-sucking parasites such as Haemonchus contortus and Ostertagia ostertagi are susceptible to control by vaccines containing "novel" or "concealed" antigens. Haemonchus contortus is primarily pathogenic to sheep and its blood-feeding behaviour caus

Experimental and natural infection of calves with Bunostomum phlebotomum.

An experiment was conducted to determine the efficiency of a method of experimental infection of weaner beef calves with Bunostomum phlebotomum and to compare such infection with that established by natural infection. Six calves, maintained on a concrete-floored pen, were inoculated with B. phlebotomum L3 by placing the larval inocuulum, in small volume, in the outer chamber of the ear while the animal was restrained for 18 min. Inoculation doses of 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, and 80 thousand L3 were used. Six other calves were grazed on pasture known to be heavily contaminated with hookworm. All anim

Effect of gastrointestinal nematode and liver fluke infections on weight gain and reproductive performance of beef heifers.

Spring born, crossbred beef heifers (n=372) were utilized over four years to measure reductions in body weights, reproductive performance and calf weights caused by gastrointestinal nematodes (primarily Ostertagia ostertagi) and the bovine liver fluke (Fasciola hepatica) and to differentiate losses attributable to each type of parasitism. Each year, weaned heifers were allotted to one of the four treatment regimens: Group 1, untreated controls; Group 2, treated for nematodes; Group 3, treated for liver fluke; and Group 4, treated for both nematodes and liver fluke. Nematodes were controlled wi

Relationship between faecal egg count and health status in Nguni goats reared on semi-arid rangelands.

Gastrointestinal parasitism is a major constraint to goat productivity, particularly in resource-limited production systems. The objective of the study was to determine the relationship between faecal egg count and the health status of different classes of Nguni goats. Body condition score (BCS), packed cell volume (PCV), FAMACHA score, and faecal egg count (FEC) were measured in 120 goats of different classes (weaners, does and bucks) across seasons. The identified gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) were Strongyloides (30 %), Haemonchus contortus (28 %), Trichostrongylus sp. (23 %), Oesophagost

Route of administration influences the concentration of ivermectin reaching nematode parasites in the gastrointestinal tract of cattle.

An animal trial was conducted to measure the concentrations of ivermectin occurring in abomasal and small intestinal contents and mucosa, and in the target parasites (Ostertagia ostertagi and Cooperia oncophora) following administration by subcutaneous, oral and pour-on routes. Twenty-five steers were infected with ivermectin-resistant isolates of O. ostertagi and C. oncophora and following patency randomly allocated to 3 treatment groups of 7 and 1 untreated control group of four. On day 0, animals in the treatment groups were administered ivermectin via the oral, injectable or pour-on routes

Gene expression of ABC transporters in Cooperia oncophora after field and laboratory selection with macrocyclic lactones.

The most widespread helminth parasites of grazing cattle in northern Europe are the gastrointestinal nematodes Ostertagia ostertagi and Cooperia oncophora. Heavy reliance on the use of macrocyclic lactone (ML) in cattle has led to world-wide emergence of resistance to this drug class in C. oncophora. There is evidence that members of the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter family, such as P-glycoproteins (P-gp) and multidrug-resistant proteins (MRP), play a role in resistance to ML. In this study gene expression of Con-pgp9, Con-pgp11, Con-pgp12, Con-pgp16 and Con-mrp1 was examined in two i

Anthelmintic resistance to ivermectin and moxidectin in gastrointestinal nematodes of cattle in Europe.

Anthelmintic resistance has been increasingly reported in cattle worldwide over the last decade, although reports from Europe are more limited. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy of injectable formulations of ivermectin and moxidectin at 0.2 mg per kg bodyweight against naturally acquired gastro-intestinal nematodes in cattle. A total of 753 animals on 40 farms were enrolled in Germany (12 farms), the UK (10 farms), Italy (10 farms), and France (8 farms). Animals were selected based on pre-treatment faecal egg counts and were allocated to one of the two treatment g

[Pharmacological effects of ivermectin, an antiparasitic agent for intestinal strongyloidiasis: its mode of action and clinical efficacy].

Ivermectin is an oral semi-synthetic lactone anthelmintic agent derived from avermectins isolated from fermentation products of Streptomyces avermitilis. Ivermectin showed a concentration-dependent inhibitory effect on motility of a free-living nematode, Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans). There exist specific binding sites having a high affinity for ivermectin in the membrane fraction of C. elegans, and a strong positive correlation was detected between the affinity for these binding sites and the suppressive effect on motility of C. elegans in several ivermectin-related substances. These re

Exploring the impact of grazing intensity and duration on dairy cow production and health.

Dairy cow grazing is widely appreciated by society due to its perceived benefits for animal welfare and health. However, concerns about dairy cow health are also cited as reasons for adopting year-round confinement systems. Comprehensive assessments on the relation of grazing intensity and duration (GID) with dairy cow production and health under practical conditions are lacking. This exploratory, longitudinal observational field study assessed the association between grazing parameters and production and health indicators in 70 commercial Dutch dairy herds during the 2023 and 2024 grazing sea

Generalist nematodes dominate the nemabiome of roe deer in sympatry with sheep at a regional level.

The growth of livestock farming and the recent expansion of wild ungulate populations in Europe favor opportunities for direct and/or indirect cross-transmission of pathogens. Comparatively few studies have investigated the epidemiology of gastro-intestinal nematode parasites, an ubiquitous and important community of parasites of ungulates, at the wildlife/livestock interface. In this study, we aimed to assess the influence of livestock proximity on the gastrointestinal nematode community of roe deer in a rural landscape located in southern France. Using ITS-2 rDNA nemabiome metabarcoding on f

The effect of simulated rainfall on the efficacy of doramectin pour-on against nematode parasites of cattle.

Two studies were conducted with doramectin topically administered at 500 microg/kg body weight to assess retention of therapeutic efficacy against nematode infections of cattle before, and after, simulated rainfall. In the first study, 50 heifers, with patent nematode infections, were allocated to one of five treatment groups. An untreated control group and one doramectin-treated group were not exposed to simulated rainfall. Simulated rainfall was applied at a rate of 25.4 mm of water in 35 min to three of the five groups: one group immediately before treatment, the second group 90 min after t

Immunodiagnosis of Taenia saginata in cattle using hydrophobic antigens from T. hydatigena metacestode cyst fluid.

Hydrophobic fractions isolated from cyst fluid of Taenia hydatigena metacestodes, obtained from naturally infected goats from Tanzania, were used in an indirect ELISA and in immunoblot (Western or dot blot) procedures. The use of the most hydrophobic fractions of the cyst fluid proved to result in a better diagnostic discrimination in ELISA than the more hydrophilic fractions. Best diagnostic ratio between responses from T. saginata infected and non-infected cattle was achieved when using horse-radish peroxidase-labelled sheep antibovine IgG1 as the conjugate. When the hydrophobic fractions of

Assessing anthelmintic resistance risk in the post-genomic era: a proof-of-concept study assessing the potential for widespread benzimidazole-resistant gastrointestinal nematodes in North American cattle and bison.

As genomic research continues to improve our understanding of the genetics of anthelmintic drug resistance, the revolution in DNA sequencing technologies will provide increasing opportunities for large-scale surveillance for the emergence of drug resistance. In most countries, parasite control in cattle and bison has mainly depended on pour-on macrocyclic lactone formulations resulting in widespread ivermectin resistance. Consequently, there is an increased interest in using benzimidazole drugs which have been used comparatively little in cattle and bison in recent years. This situation, toget

Exploring the abomasal lymph node transcriptome for genes associated with resistance to the sheep nematode Teladorsagia circumcincta.

This study exploited Blackface lambs that varied in their resistance to the abomasal nematode parasite, Teladorsagia circumcincta. Infection of these lambs over 3 months identified susceptible (high adult worm count, high faecal egg count and low IgA antibody) and resistant animals that had excluded all parasites. Previous work had shown that susceptibility and resistance is dependent on the differential immune response to the parasite, which occurs within the abomasal (gastric) lymph node (ALN) that drains the site of infection. The Affymetrix ovine gene array was used to interrogate the tran

Gastrointestinal parasites in an isolated Norwegian population of wild red deer (Cervus elaphus).

BACKGROUND: Thirteen red deer (Cervus elaphus), culled from the isolated population at the Mongstad Oil Refinery, Norway, were investigated for gastrointestinal helminths. These animals, enclosed by the refinery fence, do not have contact with other ruminants and have a high population density considering the available browsing area (1 km(2)) within the refinery site (3 km(2)). The population was estimated to be 110-130 at the time of culling. RESULTS: The helminth fauna among these sampled red deer was enumerated and species were identified based on morphology.
