Otolith functions in weightlessness.

The role of the vestibular organ in the exploration of space has been studied extensively during the past two decades. Many investigators have shown that some persons experience ill effects during the transition from the normal gravity to subgravity or weightlessness. Such adverse reactions can be related to a variety of sensory and somatic changes within the body systems; but it appears that the two major components of the unusual force field--namely, the absence of gravitational stimulation of the otolith organs and the occasional stimulation of the semicircular canals by head and body movem

Evaluating visual-vestibular interactions in motion sickness susceptibility with static subjective visual vertical, dynamic subjective visual vertical, and rod-and-frame test.

BackgroundMotion sickness (MS) occurs when the brain receives conflicting signals about body movement from the visual, vestibular, and proprioceptive systems. The otolith organs play a key role in perceiving verticality, and their function may be influenced by MS susceptibility.ObjectiveThis study aimed to investigate the effect of MS susceptibility on otolith-mediated verticality perception across different head positions.MethodsForty-seven participants were classified into two groups based on the Motion Sickness Susceptibility Questionnaire-Short Form (MSSQ-SF): an MS group (n = 24) and a co

Vertical Nystagmus in the Bow and Lean Test may Indicate Hidden Posterior Semicircular Canal Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo: Hypothesis of the Location of Otoconia.

The 'Bow and Lean Test' (BLT) was developed for proper diagnosis of horizontal semicircular canal benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (HSC-BPPV). Occasionally, down- and/or up-beating vertical nystagmus is observed during the BLT. This study analyzed patients who exhibited vertical nystagmus in the BLT to comprehend the clinical significance of this sign. Of 2872 patients with vertigo between 2010 and 2015, 225 patients who showed vertical nystagmus in the BLT were enrolled. All patterns of vertical nystagmus were described based on their types of BPPV. After performing therapeutic maneuvers

Ocular counter-rolling in scuba divers with motion sickness.

OBJECTIVE: Motion sickness (MS) is a familiar condition to scuba divers. The purpose of this study was to compare otolith organ function of scuba divers who have MS to those without MS. METHOD: Video-oculography (VOG) goggles were used to measure video ocular counter-roll (vOCR) in 50 healthy scuba divers with no vestibular pathology. Divers with MS (n = 30) had Graybiel motion sickness (GMS) scores of ≥1 point, and divers without MS (n = 20) had GMS scores of 0. Divers with MS also completed the Motion Sickness Susceptibility Questionnaire short form (MSSQs). For all divers, otolith-ocular f

Ecology of fish hearing.

Underwater sound is directional and can convey important information about the surrounding environment or the animal emitting the sound. Therefore, sound is a major sensory channel for fishes and plays a key role in many life-history strategies. The effect of anthropogenic noise on aquatic life, which may be causing homogenisation or fragmentation of biologically important signals underwater is of growing concern. In this review we discuss the role sound plays in the ecology of fishes, basic anatomical and physiological adaptations for sound reception and production, the effects of anthropogen

Theoretical considerations on canal-otolith interaction and an observer model.

Subjective vertical orientation, eye and body movements, and motion sickness all depend on the way our central nervous system deals with the gravito-inertial force resolution problem: how to discern accelerations due to motion from those due to gravity, despite these accelerations being physically indistinguishable. To control body or eye movements, the accelerations due to motion should be known explicitly. Hence, somehow gravity should be filtered out of the specific force or gravito-inertial acceleration (GIA, the sum of both accelerations) as sensed by the otoliths, which are the linear ac

A review of otolith pathways to brainstem and cerebellum.

Our knowledge of otolith pathways is developing rapidly, but is still far from complete. Primary afferents from the sacculus and utricle terminate mainly in the lateral, inferior and caudal superior vestibular nuclei, and the ventral cerebellum, in particular the nodulus. Otolith signals descend via reticulo- and vestibulospinal pathways in the spinal cord to influence neck motoneurons and ascending proprioceptive afferents. Utricular information can reach the extraocular eye muscles via mono-, di-, and multisynaptic pathways, but saccular afferents probably only by multisynaptic pathways. The

Inertial representation of angular motion in the vestibular system of rhesus monkeys. II. Otolith-controlled transformation that depends on an intact cerebellar nodulus.

1. We recently studied the spatial representation of angular motion signals in rhesus monkeys by examining the orientation of postrotatory vestibuloocular responses during tilt of the head and body relative to gravity after constant-velocity rotation about an earth-vertical axis. We have reported that low-frequency angular motion signals in the vestibuloocular reflex (VOR) of rhesus monkeys are spatially transformed such that they remain invariant relative to gravity. In the present study we examine the properties of these inertial vestibular signals by employing similar stimulation conditions

Ultrastructure of the vestibular sensory organs in delayed endolymphatic hydrops.

Vestibular sensory organs were examined ultrastructurally in two cases of delayed endolymphatic hydrops. The patients, two women, 27 and 16 years of age, suffered profound sensory hearing loss in childhood and experienced severe, recurrent vertigo. Specimens were obtained by a translabyrinthial vestibular nerve transection. We studied the utricular macula and the lateral and posterior cristae in one case, and the utricular macula, the anterior and posterior cristae, and the vestibular ganglion in the other. The otoconia and the otoconial membrane, the sensory epithelia, and the vestibular gang

Vestibular factors influencing the biomedical support of humans in space.

This paper will describe the biomedical support aspects of humans in space with respect to the vestibular system. The vestibular system is thought to be the primary sensory system involved in the short-term effects of space motion sickness although there is increasing evidence that many factors play a role in this complex set of symptoms. There is the possibility that an individual's inner sense of orientation may be strongly coupled with the susceptibility to space motion sickness. A variety of suggested countermeasures for space motion sickness will be described. Although there are no known

Ocular counterrolling abnormalities in spasmodic torticollis.

Spasmodic torticollis is a focal dystonic movement disorder of unknown origin, long hypothesized to have some vestibular involvement. An examination of otolith function, ocular counterrolling, was performed on eight patients with this disorder. The test consisted of photographing both eyes while the subject underwent rotation in both naso-occipital and earth-horizontal long axes. Measurements of eye torsion were made with a superimposition technique accurate to 0.1 degrees. Results showed all eight patients had abnormal ocular counterrolling. The most notable defect was the lack of sustained e

Proposal of a standardized testing protocol for BPPV: Using 3D simulations for insights into movement of otoliths during positional tests.

BACKGROUND: Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) is a common vestibular disorder caused by displaced otolith debris in the inner ear. This study explored the order effect related to the sequence of performing different diagnostic positional maneuvers. METHODS: 3D simulations of the Supine Roll Test (SRT), Dix-Hallpike maneuver (DHM), and Deep head hanging tests, performed in the standardized prescribed way, were used to study various types of horizontal, posterior, and anterior canal BPPV. The simulations allowed visualization of the movement of the otolith debris and the resulting nys

Otolith Irregular Fiber Stimulation Elicits a Rostro-Caudal Activity Gradient in the Vestibular Nuclear Complex and Both Direct and Indirect Afferent Pathways of the Vestibulocerebellum.

The vestibular system is important for posture, balance, motor control, and spatial orientation. Each of the vestibular end organs has specialized neuroepithelia with both regular and irregular afferents. In otolith organs, the utricle and saccule, afferents most responsive to linear jerk (jerk-derivative of acceleration) are located in the striola and project centrally to the vestibular nuclear complex (VNC) as well as the uvula and nodulus of the vestibulocerebellum (VeCb). The pattern of central neuronal activation attributed to otolith irregular afferents is relatively unknown. To address

Vitamin D Supplementation for Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo: A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVE: Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is commonly attributed to displaced otoconia. These have been shown to have biomineralization close to that of bone, and vitamin D deficiency has been associated with BPPV. We aim to systematically review the available literature on vitamin D supplementation and BPPV intensity and recurrence in adults. DATABASES REVIEWED: PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), Current Controlled Trials, and ClinicalTrials.gov. METHODS: We systematically reviewed the available literature from 1947 to April 2020.

Self-motion perception is sensitized in vestibular migraine: pathophysiologic and clinical implications.

Vestibular migraine (VM) is the most common cause of spontaneous vertigo but remains poorly understood. We investigated the hypothesis that central vestibular pathways are sensitized in VM by measuring self-motion perceptual thresholds in patients and control subjects and by characterizing the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) and vestibular and headache symptom severity. VM patients were abnormally sensitive to roll tilt, which co-modulates semicircular canal and otolith organ activity, but not to motions that activate the canals or otolith organs in isolation, implying sensitization of canal-oto

Classification, diagnostic criteria and management of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo.

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is the most common peripheral vertigo and the posterior and/or lateral semicircular canals are usually affected. BPPV is characterized by brief attacks of rotatory vertigo associated with positional and/or positioning nystagmus, which are elicited by specific head positions or changes in head position relative to gravity. In patients with the posterior-canal-type of BPPV, torsional nystagmus is induced by the Dix-Hallpike maneuver. In patients with the lateral-canal-type of BPPV, horizontal geotropic or apogeotropic nystagmus is induced by the supine
