For pediatric myringoplasty, otoendoscopy is less invasive than traditional microscopic surgery, enabling a wide-angle view and precise identification of anatomic and pathological structures. It has significant advantages, with high rates of tympanic closure, shorter operating time and simpler postoperative course. Bleeding, however, notably in children's narrow auditory canals, is a major problem, impairing visibility and complicating surgery. There are various techniques for dealing with it: cautious infiltration of the external auditory canal, and adrenaline-soaked cotton pledgets help redu

External and middle ear diseases are common disorders, especially in children, and can be examined using a digital otoscope. Hearing loss can result from delayed diagnosis and treatment which is subjective and error-prone depending on the expertise of the otolaryngologist. For these reasons, deep learning-based automated diagnostic systems are highly needed. In this study, a novel weighted average voting ensemble classifier between MobileNet and DenseNet169 has been developed to diagnose and detect different ear conditions. Bayesian optimization was used to select hyperparameters that gave the

INTRODUCTION: During descent in freediving there is exposure to rapidly increasing pressure. Inability to quickly equalise middle ear pressure may cause trauma to the ear. This study aimed to evaluate the occurrence of pressure-related damage to the middle ear and the Eustachian tube during freediving and to identify possible risk factors.
METHODS: Sixteen free divers performed diving sessions in an indoor pool 20 metres' freshwater (mfw) deep. During each session, each diver performed four own free dives and up to four safety dives. Naso- and oto-endoscopy and Eustachian tube function tests

Eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD) is a commonly suspected cause of aural fullness, otalgia, and hearing loss, but presentation varies among patients. In addition, these symptoms are not specific and can be indicative of other conditions. Some of these conditions are otologic in nature and can be localized to the external, middle, or inner ear. Others arise from outside the ear and can be attributed to functional, neurologic, or structural causes. While presentation may be similar to ETD, differentiation is possible with clinical history, physical examination, and objective testing such as otos

A persistent stapedial artery (PSA) is a rare embryologic remnant that typically involutes at week 10 of embryogenesis. However, if it is persistent, it may lead to conductive hearing loss and pulsatile tinnitus. It is of utmost importance to identify such an anomaly, as it leads to serious complications intraoperatively if overlooked. Proper clinical and radiological assessment helps an otologist recognize the PSA. We describe the case of a 24-year-old female presenting with a chronically discharging ear in addition to pulsatile tinnitus and conductive hearing loss with an incidental finding

Herein, we report an unusual case of large tonsillolith presented with acute otalgia. Since the tonsils and tonsillar fossa are supplied by the glossopharyngeal nerve, any irritation or pain can be referred to the ear along the tympanic branch of the glossopharyngeal (Jacobson's) nerve. Also, it is worth re-emphasizing that normal otoscopy must be followed by inspection of the nasal cavities, oral cavity, and oropharynx, with particular note given to the floor of mouth, teeth, tongue, and tonsils because the identification of a causative etiology is necessary to successfully treat referred ota

A case story describing the typical symptoms and course of a glomus tumour of the temporal bone is presented. The most frequent symptoms are pulsatile tinnitus, unilateral hearing loss, aural fullness and paresis of the vagal nerve or other lower cranial nerves. The tumour is frequently visible by otoscopy. Despite being histologically benign, the tumour is infiltrative and may affect the surrounding cranial nerves or spread into the cranial cavity. The early signs and findings are vague. Since the sequelae are fewer when the tumour is treated while it is small, an increased awareness will be

A case report is presented of a 54-year-old woman with tinnitus synchronous with her pulse and an ipsilateral conductive hearing loss. Otoscopy showed a pulsatile structure behind the right eardrum. Imaging with high-resolution computed tomography of the temporal bone showed an enlarged jugular vein bulb. Magnetic resonance imaging could not be performed because of an implanted pacemaker. Since a glomus jugulare tumor could not be excluded right diagnostic tympanoscopy was performed and revealed a high jugular bulb that filled nearly a third of the tympanum.

Acute otitis media is frequently encountered by general practitioners and pediatricians. In the neonatal period acute otitis media may present as an isolated local infection or as part of septicemia. Diagnosis of the condition by otoscopy is difficult. Considering the wide spectrum of middle ear disorders (acute otitis media, otitis media with effusion, chronic suppurative otitis media) one can appreciate why opinions on the management of the condition are diverse. This is a review of the literature on clinical presentation, etiology, risk factors, treatment and prevention of acute otitis medi

Thirty-four chronic myringitis cases were examined by otoscopy, pure tone audiometry, tympanometry, skull X-rays, and bacteriologic study of otorrhea. Five atypical cases are presented in detail. Three of these five cases had a perforation of the tympanic membrane preceding the appearance of typical chronic myringitis. The remaining two cases showed a transient small tympanic membrane perforation during the long course of chronic myringitis. These cases suggest that chronic myringitis could occur in some chronic suppurative otitis media and that myringitis could cause tympanic membrane perfora

BACKGROUND: Hearing screening for school-aged children is crucial to identify cases missed by newborn screening, detect delayed-onset hearing loss, and address middle ear conditions that can cause hearing impairment. This is particularly important for children with special educational needs, who may present atypical developmental patterns, increasing their risk for undetected hearing issues.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of hearing problems among students enrolled in inclusive classes at selected public special education (SPED) schools in Ilocos Norte, Philippines, d

Otitis externa (OE), an inflammation of the external ear canal, is common in both humans and companion animals and often requires prolonged antimicrobial therapy. Ozone has gained attention for its antimicrobial, antiviral, and antioxidant properties in dermatologic disorders, although its optimal dose and route of administration remain unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of topical ozone therapy for managing OE compared with conventional antimicrobial treatments. Twenty-seven client-owned dogs with OE were enrolled in an open-label, prospective, controlled clinical trial and as

INTRODUCTION: Early and accurate diagnosis of middle ear effusion in primary care settings enables timely intervention, improving long-term patient outcomes while preventing overtreatment with antibiotics. Diagnosis requires assessment of tympanic membrane mobility, but this is hampered by access to and inexperience with pneumatic otoscopy or tympanometry. This research aims to train an artificial intelligence algorithm, using tympanic membrane images captured with consumer-grade otoscopes, to accurately predict the presence or absence of pediatric middle ear effusions.

BACKGROUND: Primary secretory otitis media (PSOM) is a disease reported in the cavalier King Charles spaniel (CKCS). The diagnosis of PSOM has been made based only on visualization of a bulging tympanic membrane and mucus in the middle ear post-myringotomy. No additional tests have been evaluated for the diagnosis of PSOM; CKCSs with early disease may have been missed.
HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to compare otoscopy, tympanometry, pneumotoscopy and tympanic bulla ultrasonography, using computed tomography (CT) as the gold standard for the diagnosis of PSOM in the CK
