A study of the spatiotemporal health impacts of ozone exposure.

Exposure analysis and mapping of spatiotemporal pollutants in relation to their health effects are important challenges facing environmental health scientists and integrated assessment modellers. In this work, a methodological framework is discussed to study the impact of spatiotemporal ozone (O3) exposure distributions on the health of human populations. The framework, however, is very general and can be used to study various other pollutants. The spatiotemporal analysis starts with exposure distributions producing the input to pollutokinetic (or toxicokinetic) laws which are linked to effect

Effect of ozone on respiratory responses in subjects with asthma.

In the process of understanding the respiratory effects of individual air pollutants, it is useful to consider which populations seem to be most susceptible to the exposures. Ozone is the most ubiquitous air pollutant in the United States, and there is great interest in the extent of susceptibility to this air pollutant. This review presents evidence that individuals with asthma are more susceptible to adverse respiratory effects from ozone exposure than are nonasthmatic individuals under similar circumstances. In studies comparing patients with asthma to nonasthmatic subjects, research has sh

Oxidation of biologic molecules by ozone: the effect of pH.

Ozone (O3) is a powerfully oxidizing pollutant gas. Its toxic effects to animals appear to be worsened by coexposures to acid-generating compounds such as oxides of nitrogen and sulfur. Ozone (16 ppm) oxidizes ascorbic acid and uric acid (two important antioxidants in lung lining fluids) at equal rates at pH 5.0 or pH 7.4. Loss of intrinsic fluorescence and formation of carbonyls in albumin exposed to O3 are similar at both pH values. However, albumin-SH groups are lost much faster on exposure to O3 at pH 7.4 than at acidic pH values. A similar slower rate of -SH group disappearance at acidic

Multicenter Ozone Study in oldEr Subjects (MOSES): Part 1. Effects of Exposure to Low Concentrations of Ozone on Respiratory and Cardiovascular Outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Exposure to air pollution is a well-established risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Most of the evidence supporting an association between air pollution and adverse cardiovascular effects involves exposure to particulate matter (PM). To date, little attention has been paid to acute cardiovascular responses to ozone, in part due to the notion that ozone causes primarily local effects on lung function, which are the basis for the current ozone National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS). There is evidence from a few epidemiological studies of adverse health e

Physico-Chemical Investigation and Antimicrobial Efficacy of Ozonated Oils: The Case Study of Commercial Ozonated Olive and Sunflower Seed Refined Oils.

Drug resistance represents one of the great plagues of our time worldwide. This largely limits the treatment of common infections and requires the development of new antibiotics or other alternative approaches. Noteworthy, the indiscriminate use of antibiotics is mostly responsible for the selection of mutations that confer drug resistance to microbes. In this regard, recently, ozone has been raising interest for its unique biological properties when dissolved in natural oils. Ozonated oils have been reported to act in a non-specific way on microorganisms hindering the acquisition of advantage

Divergent trends in near-surface ozone and nitrogen dioxide and ozone-attributable health burden in the Huaihe River Basin, China, 2013-2024.

Near-surface ozone (O3) has become an increasingly important air-quality and public-health concern in China, particularly in regions where reductions in nitrogen oxides have not been accompanied by corresponding decreases in photochemical pollution. The Huaihe River Basin is a densely populated and economically important region in eastern China, but long-term basin-scale evidence on the divergent evolution of O3 and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and the associated health burden remains limited. In this study, we used high-resolution satellite-derived near-surface O3, expressed as the maximum daily 8-

Molecular transformation of algal organic matter during sequential ozonation-chlorination: Role of pre-ozonation and properties of chlorinated disinfection byproducts.

Formation of unknown chlorinated disinfection byproducts (Cl-DBPs) during chlorination gradually raised great concern, and pre-oxidation was considered as an efficient method to minimize Cl-DBP formation. In this study, pre-ozonation of algal organic matter was investigated, to explore its impacts on Cl-DBP formation and acute toxicity during subsequent chlorination. With fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) analysis, the conversion of algal organic matter in chlorination with/without pre-ozonation was tracked. The results show that pre-ozonation reduced the

Projected ozone trends and changes in the ozone-precursor relationship in the South Coast Air Basin in response to varying reductions of precursor emissions.

UNLABELLED: This study examined the effects of varying future reductions in emissions of oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOC) on the location and magnitude of peak ozone levels within California's South Coast Air Basin (SoCAB or Basin). As ozone formation is currently VOC-limited in the Basin, model simulations with 2030 baseline emissions (-61% for NOx and -32% for VOC from 2008) predict 10-20% higher peak ozone levels (i.e., NOx disbenefit) in the western and central SoCAB compared with the 2008 base simulation. With additional NOx reductions of 50% beyond the 2030 b

Critical comments on ultrasound-guided paravertebral oxygen-ozone injections.

The randomized controlled trial by Forogh and Kazemi compared ultrasound-guided "paravertebral" ozone-oxygen injections with pure oxygen in patients with chronic discogenic low back pain. While the study addresses an important clinical question, its methodological limitations constrain the reliability of its conclusions. The sample size of only 30 participants provides insufficient statistical power, and the justification for effect size and minimal clinically important difference is inadequate. Blinding was not verified, raising concerns that sensory cues from ozone injections may have compro

A New Mouse Model for Ozone Health Effects Research.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to the ambient air pollutant ozone (O3) is associated with adverse respiratory health outcomes. Rodent models have been used to identify mechanisms of response to O3, but their utility has been questioned owing to species differences in physiologic response, most notably exposure-induced hypothermia, which renders rodents relatively resistant to O3 compared to humans. OBJECTIVES: First, to test whether a recombinant inbred mouse strain from the Collaborative Cross population, CC002/Unc, provides a sensitive model of ozone response by benchmarking it to the most commonly u

Potential drivers of the recent large Antarctic ozone holes.

The past three years (2020-2022) have witnessed the re-emergence of large, long-lived ozone holes over Antarctica. Understanding ozone variability remains of high importance due to the major role Antarctic stratospheric ozone plays in climate variability across the Southern Hemisphere. Climate change has already incited new sources of ozone depletion, and the atmospheric abundance of several chlorofluorocarbons has recently been on the rise. In this work, we take a comprehensive look at the monthly and daily ozone changes at different altitudes and latitudes within the Antarctic ozone hole. Fo

Mineralization of sulfonamides from wastewater using ozone-based systems.

Ozone, UV/ozone, ozone/persulfate (PS) and UV/ozone/PS systems were used to mineralize sulfonamides. Sulfadiazine (SDZ), sulfamerazine (SMR) and sulfamethazine (SMZ) were the target compounds. The novel contribution of this study is its determination of the effects of PS addition, sulfonamide structure, pH and salinity on sulfonamide mineralization in ozone-based systems. The mineralization rate of sulfonamides satisfied pseudo-first-order kinetics. The SMZ mineralization rate constant in ozone, UV/ozone, ozone/PS and UV/ozone/PS systems at pH 5 were 0.0058; 0.0101; 0.0069 and 0.0802 min-1, re

Acute Respiratory Barrier Disruption by Ozone Exposure in Mice.

Ozone exposure causes irritation, airway hyperreactivity (AHR), inflammation of the airways, and destruction of alveoli (emphysema), the gas exchange area of the lung in human and mice. This review focuses on the acute disruption of the respiratory epithelial barrier in mice. A single high dose ozone exposure (1 ppm for 1 h) causes first a break of the bronchiolar epithelium within 2 h with leak of serum proteins in the broncho-alveolar space, disruption of epithelial tight junctions and cell death, which is followed at 6 h by ROS activation, AHR, myeloid cell recruitment, and remodeling. Aging Exacerbates Neuroinflammatory Outcomes Induced by Acute Ozone Exposure.

The role of environmental stressors, particularly exposure to air pollution, in the development of neurodegenerative disease remains underappreciated. We examined the neurological effects of acute ozone (O3) exposure in aged mice, where increased blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability may confer vulnerability to neuroinflammatory outcomes. C57BL/6 male mice, aged 8-10 weeks or 12-18 months were exposed to either filtered air or 1.0 ppm O3 for 4 h; animals received a single IP injection of sodium fluorescein (FSCN) 20 h postexposure. One-hour post-FSCN injection, animals were transcardially per
