Alcohol Use Disorder Risk and Protective Factors and Associated Harms Among Pacific Islander Young Adults.

Pacific Islander (PI) young adults (age 18 to 30 years) experience elevated rates of hazardous drinking, AUDs, and alcohol-related harms. Yet, we know little about the risk and protective factors that drive, or can prevent, PI young adult hazardous drinking behaviors and AUDs due to a lack of targeted alcohol disparities research. This large qualitative study presents data from 8 focus groups with 69 PIs (51 young adults, 18 informal providers) to explore the major risk factors, protective factors, and negative consequences associated with PI young adult hazardous drinking and AUDs. Findings r

Mental Health Status, Need, and Unmet Need for Mental Health Services Among U.S. Pacific Islanders.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the mental health status, need for services, and unmet need of community-dwelling Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islanders (NHPI). METHODS: Survey data were collected from 223 NHPI adults of Samoan or Marshallese heritage. Surveys were translated into Samoan and Marshallese by using back-translation, with feedback from cultural experts. Severity of depression, anxiety, and alcohol use were measured, as were perceived need for and avoidance of, or delay in, seeking mental health services. Logistic regressions calculated adjusted odds ratios for past-year perce

Rapid growth from 12 to 23 months of life predicts obesity in a population of Pacific Island children.

BACKGROUND: Rapid growth (RG) in early childhood has been associated with increased risk of obesity. The specific intervals when risk is highest have not been well examined and may help identify modifiable risk factors. OBJECTIVE: To determine the correlation between RG in consecutive time intervals during the first 2 years of life with obesity at 4-5 years. METHODS: This was a retrospective study of children attending the largest community health center in Hawaii. Children, aged 4-5 years, with a pre-kindergarten (PreK) well-child physical examination were included; data were abstracted fro

Prevalence of heart disease and its risk factors related to age in Asians, Pacific Islanders, and Whites in Hawai'i.

Here, we describe our patient-centered medical home (PCMH) quality improvement retention project conducted by a Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Ryan White-funded Primary Care HIV clinic. The single urban academic clinic serving 2,776 active HIV positive patients identified 25.8% (716/2,776) patients who had not been retained in care within the prior six months during two separate six-month interval analyses. Multiple modalities including a retention specialist, a secure clinic phone message line, algorithms, flyers, brochures, database, and staff education were built to fac

Eye conditions among 5- to 7-year-old Asian-Pacific Islander schoolchildren in Southern California.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence rates and specific risk factors for development of eye conditions among Asian-Pacific Islander schoolchildren are unknown. This information is necessary to understand their eye care needs and to improve access to eye care for this rapidly growing population. METHODS: Data obtained from a computer database of vision screening examinations conducted by the UCLA Mobile Eye Clinic from October 1987 through December 1996 were analyzed for 2,687 Asian-Pacific Islander schoolchildren between 5 and 7 years of age. RESULTS: Myopia (8.9%) and astigmatism (15.8%) represented

A Population Based Analysis of Breast Cancer Outcomes Among Disaggregated Asian American and Pacific Islander Women.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer incidence is rising among Asian women, yet aggregation of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) populations obscures meaningful subgroup differences. This study evaluated tumor biology, treatment patterns, and overall survival (OS) among disaggregated AAPI subgroups. METHODS: Using the National Cancer Database, we identified AAPI women with stage I-III invasive breast cancer diagnosed from 2004 to 2021, disaggregated into East Asians (EA), Southeast Asian (SE), South Asian (SA), and Pacific Island (PI) women. Maternal Obesity and Neonatal Death in Preterm US Pacific Islander Neonates Using 2 Analytic Approaches.

IMPORTANCE: Owing to a high prevalence of obesity, Pacific Islander individuals in the US are at higher risk for preterm birth (PTB), but outcomes after PTB remain understudied. Existing literature suggests that associations between prepregnancy obesity and neonatal mortality stratified by gestational age (GA) are modest or null, which may be a result of overlooked stratification bias. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the association between prepregnancy body mass index (BMI) and neonatal death (NND) following PTB by different degrees of prematurity in US Pacific Islander neonates using birth-based and

Racial Disparities in Cardiometabolic Disorders Among Alzheimer's Disease Patients: A Study on Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders.

BACKGROUND: Cardiometabolic disorders may accelerate the progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD), potentially impacting ethnic-racial groups with a higher prevalence of diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular disease, though limited data exists on Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders (NHPI) populations. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to examine the prevalence of diabetes and associated comorbidities among AD patients from different ethnic-racial groups - Asians, Whites, and NHPIs - in Hawaii, with a focus on identifying risk factors linked to AD. METHOD: A retrospective review was conducted on A

Experiences of racism in the U.S. - A perspective from Asian & Pacific Islander, Black, Latina, and Middle Eastern women.

INTRODUCTION: Racism is a critical social determinant of health because it can have a direct impact on health and well-being, as well as infiltrate systems, policies, and practices. Few studies have explored the similarities and differences of experiences with racism and health between different minoritized groups. The objective of this paper is to examine how racism influences life experiences from the perspectives of Asian & Pacific Islander, Black, Latina, and Middle Eastern women. METHODS: Eleven online racially/ethnically homogeneous focus groups with a total of 52 participants were cond

A decade of submersible observations revealed temporal trends in elasmobranchs in a remote island of the Eastern Tropical Pacific Ocean.

No-take marine protected areas (MPAs) can mitigate the effects of overfishing, climate change and habitat degradation, which are leading causes of an unprecedented global biodiversity crisis. However, assessing the effectiveness of MPAs, especially in remote oceanic islands, can be logistically challenging and often restricted to relatively shallow and accessible environments. Here, we used a long-term dataset (2010-2019) collected by the DeepSee submersible of the Undersea Hunter Group that operates in Isla del Coco National Park, Costa Rica, to (1) determine the frequency of occurrence of el

Increased maternal morbidity and mortality among Asian American and Pacific Islander women in the military health system.

BACKGROUND: Rates of maternal morbidity and mortality experienced by women in the United States have been shown to vary significantly by race, most commonly attributed to differences in access to healthcare and socioeconomic status. Recent data showed that Asian Pacific Islanders have the highest rate of maternal morbidity despite having a higher socioeconomic status. In the military, women of all races are granted equal access to healthcare, irrespective of socioeconomic class. We hypothesized that within the military, there would be no racial disparities in maternal outcomes because of unive

Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islanders' Leading Risk Factors for Ischemic Stroke: A Comparative Ethnographic Study.

INTRODUCTION: Hawaii is a multicultural state with many different ethnicities, including Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders (NHOPI). This demographic has not been thoroughly studied, despite its significantly higher prevalence of stroke. This study aimed to characterize risk factors for ischemic stroke in NHOPI compared to other ethnicities. METHODS: An Institutional Review Board (IRB) sanctioned retrospective chart review was conducted at a multi-site community neurology clinic from June 2017 through June 2019. Prospective patients were identified from the database using the Intern

"Being proactive, not reactive": exploring perceptions of genetic testing among White, Latinx, and Pacific Islander Populations.

Genetic testing is becoming an integral part of healthcare, but evidence suggests that both race and ethnicity influence access to and utilization of genetic testing. Given this barrier, data are needed on the perceptions of genetic testing in racial and ethnic minority groups. The purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions of three types of genetic testing (genetic testing for adult-onset conditions, prenatal screening, and newborn screening) in a sample of US participants who identified as White, Pacific Islander, and Latinx (10 dyads from each group for 60 participants total). Latent Class Analysis of Cancer Risk Behaviors Among College Students on Guam: A Pacific Islands Cohort of College Students Study (PICCS).

This study aims to explore how cancer-related risk factors cluster among college students in Guam. Using the 2021-2022 Pacific Islands Cohort of College Students data, we conducted a latent class analysis (LCA) to organize the sample into classes based on clustering cancer risk factors, including tobacco use, binge drinking, low fruit/vegetable intake, physical inactivity, betel nut use, overweight/obesity, depression, and anxiety. Among the 577 college students surveyed, results show a high prevalence of low fruit/vegetable intake, overweight/obesity, depression, and anxiety. The LCA identifi

Temporal and Geographical Patterns of Pacific Arboviral Vectors on Ebeye, Republic of the Marshall Islands: Insights from a Longitudinal Entomological Study.

Arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses) such as dengue, chikungunya, Zika, and yellow fever pose significant global health risks, with mosquitoes from the Aedes genus as the primary vectors responsible for human transmission. The Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI), particularly the urbanized areas of Kwajalein and Majuro atolls, has experienced multiple outbreaks of dengue, Zika, and chikungunya with substantial health and economic impacts. Vector control remains the most effective method for reducing disease risk, but comprehensive data on local mosquito vector composition, distribution, an
