Genus Gobiodon are obligate coral dwelling cryptic fishes. Gobiodon form a mutualistic relationship with host scleractinian corals, making them integral to coral reef ecosystem functioning. Despite this, they are often omitted from fish assemblage studies, biodiversity surveys and coral reef fish guides due to confusion on species identification. The guide aims to provide a comprehensive description of the main diagnostic features for the majority of Gobiodon species distributed throughout the Indo-Pacific region. Species of the genus can be observed occupying host corals of the genera Acropor

Spatial heterogeneity linked to fish assemblages has been key to advancing conservation plans and assessing marine resources in remote ecosystems. The Juan Fernández Archipelago is a remote and highly heterogeneous geologic hotspot located on the Nazca plate (SE Pacific), comprising three islands, numerous seamounts and guyots, and a highly rugged coastal marine shelf. Hundreds of rocky reefs of various sizes characterize this insular coastal shelf, supporting diverse finfish populations of interest for the Robinson Crusoe Island artisanal fishing fleet. Two hydroacoustic surveys were conducte

Documenting distributional shifts in populations is critical for understanding ecosystem function and developing effective conservation strategies, particularly for rare and understudied species. The Critically Endangered eastern population of North Pacific right whale (NPRW) was driven to near extinction by commercial whaling and has not recovered (N < 35). We analyzed passive acoustic data from seven sites along the eastern Bering Sea shelf (2012-2019) to investigate spatial and environmental associations of NPRW calling patterns on a rapidly warming primary foraging ground. Generalized addi

Seamounts are prominent seafloor features that strongly influence geological processes, ocean circulation, and benthic biodiversity. Despite their importance, most seamounts remain unmapped and poorly characterized, particularly in the southeast Pacific Ocean, a region recognized for high marine endemism and ecological isolation. In this study, we present a quantitative habitat characterization of a previously undocumented seamount, informally named Solito Seamount, located between the Nazca-Desventuradas Marine Park and the Juan Fernández Archipelago, within Chile's Exclusive Economic Zone. Two types of Cladonema pacificum (Cnidaria, Hydrozoa) can be distinguished based on whether their medusae spawn after a dark-light transition ("light type") or a light-dark transition ("dark type"). To clarify how these two types are related, we characterized C. pacificum from different sites in the Tohoku region of Japan. Essentially, only dark-type medusae were captured in the Pacific Ocean side, whereas light- and dark-type medusae were found sympatrically at some sampling points in Mutsu Bay and in the Sea of Japan side. We observed that the spawning times of the sympatric light and dark t

Prevalence values for 3 digenean species of the family Opecoelidae were calculated during a half-year period from 20 individuals per month of the fish species Clinocottus analis, collected from an intertidal environment of Baja California, Mexico. Trematode species recovered were Opecoelus adsphaericus, Opecoelus cameroni, and Opecoelus pacificus. Of these, only O. adsphaericus was present throughout the study, whereas O. pacificus and O. cameroni were recorded for 1 or 2 mo, respectively, exhibiting relatively low prevalence values. The decrease in prevalence of O. adsphaericus coincides with

Emprostiotrema contains just 3 species: E. fusum, E. kuntzi and E. sigani. As adults, all 3 species infect rabbitfishes (Siganidae: Siganus). New collections from 11 species of Siganus from northern Australia, Indonesia, New Caledonia, French Polynesia, Palau and Japan enabled an exploration of species composition within this genus. Phylogenetic analyses demonstrate a deep distinction between 2 major clades; clade 1 comprises most of the sequences of specimens from Australia as well as all of those from Japan, Palau and New Caledonia and clade 2 comprises all sequences of specimens from French

Monocotyle luquei n. sp. (Monogenea: Monocotylidae) was described from gills of diamond stingray Dasyatis dipterura (Jordan and Gilbert, 1880) (Dasyatidae) off Peru. The new species can be differentiated from the other species of the genus by the combination of the following characteristics: (1) accessory sclerites on the dorsal posterior surface of the body absent, (2) only one testis is present, (3) 1-2 loops in the copulatory organ, (4) the male copulatory organ with a sclerotized accessory piece, (5) shape of five sclerites in marginal papillae, (6) size of anchor and (7) posterolateral se

Investigations to determine whether juvenile gnathiid isopods are vectors of haemogregarines between coral reef fishes were undertaken at Lizard Island, Australia. Haemogregarina balistapi parasitaemias in triggerfish, Rhinecanthus aculeatus, decreased under gnathiid-free, laboratory conditions, compared with those in tagged R. aculeatus returned to the reef. Gnathia aureamaculosa juveniles were common ectoparasites of reef R. aculeatus and laboratory reared specimens of this gnathiid were fed on R. aculeatus infected with H. balistapi. Subsequent squashes of this gnathiid contained haemogrega

We introduce a new marine syndrome called ulcerated yellow spot, affecting the soft coral Sarcophyton ehrenbergi. To identify bacteria associated with tissue lesions, tissue and mucus samples were taken during a 2009 Indo-Pacific research expedition near the Wakatobi Island chain, Indonesia. Polymerase chain reaction targeting the 16S rDNA gene indicated associations with the known fish-disease-causing bacterium Photobacterium damselae, as well as multiple Vibrio species. Results indicate a shift toward decreasing diversity of bacteria in lesioned samples. Photobacterium damselae ssp. piscicid

Marine mammals are often cited as "sentinels of ocean health" yet accessible, synthesized data on their health changes that could effectively warn of ocean health changes are rare. The objectives of this study were to 1) perform a systematic review of published cases of marine mammal disease to determine spatial and temporal trends in disease from 1972-2012, including changes in regions and taxa affected and specific causes; and 2) compare numbers of published cases of neoplasia with known, hospital-based neoplasia records to explore the causes of discrepancy between numbers of published cases

Contributions of Pacific Islands countries to marine plastic debris are disproportionate to the effects on people's connections to the ocean. Plastic waste management initiatives face challenges in containing waste and consequently plastics plague coastal environments. The Seabin, a floating trash skimmer, presents a novel and replicable approach to collecting and cataloguing marine plastics. The objectives of the study were to conduct an audit of marine plastic debris within the breakwaters of the University of the South Pacific, Marine Campus at Laucala Bay while simultaneously gauging the e

The origin of methylmercury in pelagic fish remains unclear, with many unanswered questions regarding the production and degradation of this neurotoxin in the water column. We used mercury (Hg) stable isotope ratios of marine particles and biota to elucidate the cycling of methylmercury prior to incorporation into the marine food web. The Hg isotopic composition of particles, zooplankton, and fish reveals preferential methylation of Hg within small (< 53 µm) marine particles in the upper 400 m of the North Pacific Ocean. Mass-dependent Hg isotope ratios (δ202Hg) recorded in small particles ove

Genetic and phenotypic analyses of independent secondary contact zones between certain pairs of divergent populations offer powerful opportunities to assess whether the consequences vary with different environmental backgrounds. Populations of the ice goby Leucopsarion petersii are distributed throughout the Japanese archipelago and comprise genetically and phenotypically divergent groups in the Japan Sea and the Pacific Ocean. In particular, populations in the Japan Sea have a larger body size and numbers of vertebrae than those in the Pacific Ocean. Herein, we performed integrated analyses o

Zika virus is an emerging mosquito-borne flavivirus that typically causes a mild febrile illness with rash, arthralgia, or conjunctivitis. Zika virus has recently caused large outbreaks of disease in southeast Asia, Pacific Ocean Islands, and the Americas. We identified all positive Zika virus test results performed at U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from 2010 to 2014. For persons with test results indicating a recent infection with Zika virus, we collected information on demographics, travel history, and clinical features. Eleven Zika virus disease cases were identified among

As part of a broad survey of the trematodes of damselfishes (Pomacentridae) in the tropical Indo-West Pacific, zoogonids were collected from multiple localities in Australia, New Caledonia, and French Polynesia. All zoogonid specimens collected were consistent with the subfamily Lecithostaphylinae, and morphological and molecular data (ITS2 and 28S rDNA, and cox1 mtDNA) were generated for most host-locality combinations to enable an integrative species delimitation. The collection comprised three species: Deretrema stratiotes n. sp. from four species of Abudefduf Forsskål from Ningaloo Reef in

Zika virus is an emerging mosquito-borne flavivirus currently causing large epidemics in the Pacific Ocean region and Brazil. Clinically, Zika fever resembles dengue fever, but is less severe. Whereas the clinical syndrome and laboratory diagnostic procedures have been described, little attention was paid to the immunology of the disease and its possible use for clinical follow-up of patients. Here, we investigate the role of cytokines in the pathogenesis of Zika fever in travelers returning from Asia, the Pacific, and Brazil. Polyfunctional T cell activation (Th1, Th2, Th9, and Th17 response)

BACKGROUND: There is increasing recognition of the concordance between marine biogeographic and phylogeographic boundaries. However, it is still unclear how population-level divergence translates into species-level divergence, and what are the principal factors that first initiate that divergence, and then maintain reproductive isolation. This study examines the likely forces driving population and lineage divergences in the broadly-distributed Indo-Pacific spiny lobster Panulirus homarus, which has peripheral divergent lineages in the west and east. The study focuses particularly on the West

Killer whales (Orcinus orca) are the most widely distributed marine mammals and have radiated to occupy a range of ecological niches. Disparate sympatric types are found in the North Atlantic, Antarctic and North Pacific oceans, however, little is known about the underlying mechanisms driving divergence. Previous phylogeographic analysis using complete mitogenomes yielded a bifurcating tree of clades corresponding to described ecotypes. However, there was low support at two nodes at which two Pacific and two Atlantic clades diverged. Here we apply further phylogenetic and coalescent analyses t

While the bulk of human exposure to mercury is through the consumption of marine fish, most of what we know about mercury methylation and bioaccumulation is from studies of freshwaters. We know little of where and how mercury is methylated in the open oceans, and there is currently a debate whether methylmercury concentrations in marine fish have increased along with global anthropogenic mercury emissions. Measurements of mercury concentrations in Yellowfin tuna caught off Hawaii in 1998 show no increase compared to measurements of the same species caught in the same area in 1971. On the basis
