Onychomycosis is a common fungal nail infection in adults that is difficult to treat. The in vitro antifungal activity of efinaconazole, a novel triazole antifungal, was evaluated in recent clinical isolates of Trichophyton rubrum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, and Candida albicans, common causative onychomycosis pathogens. In a comprehensive survey of 1,493 isolates, efinaconazole MICs against T. rubrum and T. mentagrophytes ranged from ≤ 0.002 to 0.06 μg/ml, with 90% of isolates inhibited (MIC90) at 0.008 and 0.015 μg/ml, respectively. Efinaconazole MICs against 105 C. albicans isolates range

Otomycosis is common throughout the world but barely studied in Spain. Our objective was to determine the microbiological and epidemiological characteristics of this pathology in Cadiz (Spain) between 2005 and 2010. Samples from patients with suspicion of otomycosis underwent a direct microscopic examination and culture on different media for fungi and bacteria. Mycological cultures were incubated at 30°C for at least seven days. Identification of fungi was based on colonial morphology and microscopic examination of fungal structure. From a total of 2,633 samples, microbial growth was present

Exposure to indoor fungi is of growing concern in residential and occupational environments in the United States. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of sensitization to common indoor fungal species in an atopic population. We evaluated 102 patients (73 female and 29 male patients) for immunoglobulin E (IgE) reactivity to a panel of skin-prick test (SPT) reagents used for routine allergy testing. Patients also were tested for six additional fungi that are common indoor contaminants. All patients had symptoms consistent with allergic rhinitis or asthma. The presence of spe

Medical records of 10 dogs in which fungal infection was diagnosed between 1982 and 1990 were reviewed. In each dog, infection was determined to be caused by a single species of fungus, either Aspergillus terreus, Penicillium sp, Paecilomyces sp, Chrysosporium sp, or Pseudallescheria boydii. Nine dogs were German Shepherd Dogs; 1 was a German Shepherd Dog cross, and 9 were females. The most common clinical signs were signs of neck or back pain (9 dogs), weight loss (7 dogs), anorexia (6 dogs), pyrexia (6 dogs), paresis (3 dogs), and paralysis (3 dogs). All 10 dogs had evidence of multiple site

A laboratory assay to assess colonization of a submersed aquatic plant, Eurasian water milfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum), by fungi was developed and used to evaluate the colonization potential of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, Acremonium curvulum, Cladosporium herbarum, Aureobasidium pullulans, a Paecilomyces sp., and an unidentified sterile, septate fungus. Stem segments of plants were first immersed in suspensions of fungal propagules for 24 h and then washed to remove all but the tightly attached component of the population. Inoculation was followed by two growth cycles of 3 days each. At th

Porcine blood, a significant byproduct of the pork industry, represents a potential source of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs). AMPs offer a promising alternative to chemical antimicrobials, which can be used as natural preservatives in the food industry. AMPs can exhibit both antibacterial and/or antifungal properties, thus improving food safety and addressing the growing concern of antibiotic and antifungal resistance. The objective of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of potential AMPs previously identified from porcine cruor hydrolysates. To this end, a total of sixteen pe

In the expanding population of immunocompromised patients and those treated in intensive care units, rare fungal infectious agents have emerged as important pathogens, causing invasive infections associated with high morbidity and mortality. These infections may present either as de novo or as breakthrough invasive infections in high-risk patients with hematologic malignancies receiving prophylactic or empirical antifungal therapy or in patients with central venous catheters. Diagnosis and treatment are challenging. Physicians should have a high index of suspicion because early diagnosis is of

Opportunistic fungi have emerged during the past decade as important causes of morbidity and mortality in immunocompromised patients. Candida species constitute the third to fourth most common causes of nosocomial blood stream infections, and Aspergillus species have emerged as the most common infectious cause of pneumonic mortality in bone marrow/stem cell transplant recipients. Among HIV-infected patients, meningoencephalitis due to Cryptococcus neoformans ranks among the most common AIDS-defining infections. Hyaline septated filamentous fungi, such as Fusarium species, Acremonium species, P

The ambrosia beetles Xylosandrus crassiusculus (Motschulsky) and Xylosandrus germanus (Blandford) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) are major pests in fruit, nut, and ornamental tree nurseries. Adult females tunnel into stressed trees, creating galleries in the sapwood and heartwood to cultivate their nutritional fungal mutualists, which are associated with branch dieback and tree death. The current management approach relies on trunk applications of permethrin and bifenthrin to decrease infestation risk in the United States. However, the efficacy of other insecticides has not been thoroughly evalua

Manogepix is a potent new antifungal agent targeting the fungal Gwt1 enzyme. Manogepix has previously demonstrated potent in vitro activity against clinical isolates of both Candida (except Candida krusei) and Aspergillus species. This study determined the in vitro activity of manogepix and comparators against a large collection of infrequently encountered yeast and molds. Manogepix demonstrated potent in vitro activity against infrequently encountered yeasts exhibiting elevated MIC values to other drug classes, including Candida spp. (MIC50/90, 0.008/0.12 mg/L), Saprochaete clavata (Magnusiom

BACKGROUND: The association between plants and soil microbes is critical for both soil and plant health. Introducing beneficial microbial inoculants, such as arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), can enhance the uptake of nutrients and compounds in plants including ergothioneine (ERGO), a well-known antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compound that humans must obtain through diet. However, little is known about how ERGO and inoculated AMF influence ERGO uptake in plants or affect soil microbiome composition, including bacteria, archaea, and fungi. This study investigates the interaction between so

Clubroot, caused by the obligate parasite Plasmodiophora brassicae, is a soilborne disease affecting canola (Brassica napus) and other crucifers. Although planting resistant cultivars remains the primary strategy for managing clubroot, the emergence of resistance-breaking P. brassicae pathotypes continues to threaten canola production. In this context, soil and root microorganisms may play a role in suppressing the disease. This study investigated the impact of P. brassicae infection on the microbial communities of soil, seeds, roots, and the rhizosphere in susceptible and resistant canola lin

The influence of cadmium, zinc and lead on fungal emulsifier synthesis and on the growth of filamentous fungus Curvularia lunata has been studied. Tolerance to heavy metals established for C. lunata was additionally compared with the sensitivity exhibited by strains of Curvularia tuberculata and Paecilomyces marquandii-fungi which do not secrete compounds of emulsifying activity. Although C. lunata, as the only one out of all studied fungi, exhibited the lowest tolerance to heavy metals when grown on a solid medium (in conditions preventing emulsifier synthesis), it manifested the highest tole

Fungal infections contribute to a significant disease burden in patients with chronic granulomatous disease (CGD). While the presentation may differ depending on genotype and environmental exposure to fungus, associated mortality rates are universally high. This is a retrospective study wherein medical records of patients diagnosed with CGD from 1994 to 2022 at our center in North India were reviewed. We categorized patients into 2 groups: patients with proven invasive fungal infection and patients with probable invasive fungal infections. We analyzed demographic details, clinical details, and

Industrialization-driven surface ozone (O3) pollution significantly impairs plant growth. This study evaluates the effectiveness of exogenous protectants [3 mg L⁻1 abscisic acid (ABA), 400 mg L⁻1 ethylenediurea (EDU), and 80 mg L⁻1 spermidine (Spd)] on Trifolium repens subjected to O3 stress in open-top chambers, focusing on plant growth and dynamics of culturable endophytic fungal communities. Results indicate that O3 exposure adversely affects photosynthesis, reducing root biomass and altering root structure, which further impacts the ability of plant to absorb essential nutrients such as po

Patients with phagocytic, cellular, combined and other primary immunodeficiencies exhibit immune deficits that confer increased susceptibility to fungal infections. A number of yeasts and moulds, most commonly Candida and Aspergillus but also Cryptococcus, Histoplasma, Paecilomyces, Scedosporium, Trichosporon, Penicillium and other, rarely isolated, fungal organisms, have been variably implicated in causing disease in patients with chronic granulomatous disease, severe combined immunodeficiency, chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis, hyper-IgE syndrome, myeloperoxidase deficiency, leukocyte adhesi
