Art therapy and emotional pain: a scoping review of physiological and biological measures.

INTRODUCTION: The increasing prevalence of mental health disorders and emotional pain poses a critical challenge to social well-being and healthcare equity. Visual art therapy is well established as a clinical and nonclinical intervention for emotional pain that promotes self-regulation and psychological insight. However, there is a lack of research that clearly maps the previous studies that use both subjective and objective measures to examine the impact of art therapy on emotional pain. METHODS: This scoping review focuses on studies that use brain or physiological measurement in investiga

Clinical measures in chronic neuropathic pain are related to the Kennedy and endocannabinoid pathways.

BACKGROUND: Chronic neuropathic pain (CNP) is a debilitating condition, often refractory to currently available drugs. Understanding biochemical alterations in peripheral tissues such as blood will be useful for understanding underlying pathophysiological processes relating to CNP. METHODS: We collected blood from two independent cohorts of CNP and pain-free controls (CNP n = 129/Controls n = 127) in the UK and Ireland to investigate the relationship between CNP-associated molecular/biochemical alterations and a range of clinical and pain metric parameters. Multiple statistical comparisons we

Validation of a holistic composite outcome measure for the evaluation of chronic pain interventions.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic pain is a personal experience influenced by multiple biopsychosocial factors. Using a pain intensity measure alone to assess the effectiveness of a chronic pain intervention fails to fully evaluate its impact on the multifaceted chronic pain experience. The holistic minimal clinically important difference (MCID) is a composite outcome developed to provide a comprehensive assessment of chronic pain in response to intervention, across 5 outcome domains: pain intensity, health-related quality of life, sleep quality, physical, and emotional function. To focus on domains where

Musculoskeletal Pain Characteristics and Objectively Measured Physical Activity in Older Adults.

BACKGROUND: Pain is associated with reports of restricted physical activity (PA), yet the association between musculoskeletal pain characteristics and objectively measured PA quantities and patterns in late life is not well understood. METHODS: A total of 553 adults (mean age 75.8 ± 8.4 years, 54.4% women) in the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging (BLSA) completed a health interview and subsequent 7-day wrist-worn ActiGraph assessment in the free-living environment between 2015 and 2020. Pain characteristics, including pain presence in 6x sites (ie, shoulders, hands/wrists, low back, hip,

Patellofemoral pain syndrome assessed by Lysholm score, radiological and biorheometric measurements.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of In this study was to verify the relationship among clinical indicators of patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) and the results of modifying radiological investigation. Previous research suggests that there is a poor association between them. Therefore we have employed a technique for the functional evaluation of PFPS based on measuring the stiffness of the knee joint during passive flexion (biorheometry). METHOD: The correlation between clinical examination and a standardized Lysholm score, radiological and biorheometric measures was investigated in the 28 knee joints

Altered Functional and Structural Measures in Masters Swimmers With Shoulder Pain and Disability.

CONTEXT: Supraspinatus tendinopathy and shoulder pain are common in competitive youth swimmers. However, no researchers have investigated clinical and structural factors contributing to shoulder pain and disability in masters-level swimmers. OBJECTIVE: To (1) determine the prevalence of shoulder pain and disability in masters-level swimmers; (2) identify the most provocative special tests for shoulder pain; and (3) determine if shoulder clinical and tissue-specific measures, training variables, and volume varied between those with and those without shoulder pain, dissatisfaction, and disabili

Cerebral processing of sharp mechanical pain measured with arterial spin labeling.

INTRODUCTION: Arterial spin labeling (ASL) is a functional neuroimaging technique that has been frequently used to investigate acute pain states. A major advantage of ASL as opposed to blood-oxygen-level-dependent functional neuroimaging is its applicability for low-frequency designs. As such, ASL represents an interesting option for studies in which repeating an experimental event would reduce its ecological validity. Whereas most ASL pain studies so far have used thermal stimuli, to our knowledge, no ASL study so far has investigated pain responses to sharp mechanical pain. METHODS: As a pr

Effects of ascending buprenorphine doses on measures of experimental pain: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Buprenorphine is widely used in the treatment of opioid use disorder and pain management. Little is known about the analgesic effects of high-dose sublingual buprenorphine, particularly in doses of >8 mg. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of ascending doses of buprenorphine upon acute pain measures in patients stabilized on buprenorphine as treatment for opioid dependence. METHODS: The pilot study (n = 7) was a randomised, controlled, double-blind, double-dummy, within-subject crossover study examining cold-pressor threshold and tolerance testing under different bupr

An automatic measure of progression during colonoscopy correlates to patient experienced pain.

BACKGROUND: Colonoscopy screening and surveillance programs depend on patient's tolerable experience, which is associated with competence of the endoscopist. The Colonoscopy Progression Score (CoPS) is an automated tool based on recording of the Magnetic Scope Imager (MEI) picture in order to track progression. CoPS deliver a numeric score and a graphic map. A high score expresses a rapid and smooth progression. Aims of study were to explore the correlation between CoPS and patient experienced pain and to identity locations associated with pain. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Patients listed for colo

Evaluating comfort measures for commonly performed painful procedures in pediatric patients.

INTRODUCTION: Management of pediatric pain from medical procedures is of great importance for improving both patient care and experience. In this study, we investigated methods of managing acute pain in infants and children by studying the correlation between the number of attempts to complete painful procedures, given different comfort measures. METHODS: The study is a retrospective review of 74,276 procedures performed at two pediatric hospitals in an integrated academic children's health system between 2013 and 2016. We compared three comfort measures most frequently offered: positions of

Self-report pain and symptom measures for primary dysmenorrhoea: a critical review.

Primary dysmenorrhoea (PD) is highly prevalent among women of reproductive age and it can have significant short- and long-term consequences for both women and society as a whole. Validated symptom measures are fundamental for researchers to understand women's symptom experience of PD and to test symptom interventions. The objective of this paper was to critically review the content and psychometric properties of self-report tools to measure symptoms of PD. Measuring pain medication expectancies in adults treated for substance use disorders.

BACKGROUND: The U.S. prevalence of misuse of prescription opioid analgesics has increased substantially over the past decade but research on the factors influencing misuse of these medications remains preliminary. In the literature on alcohol, marijuana and stimulants, substance-related expectancies have been found to predict level of substance use. A similar line of research is needed to better understand reasons for misusing pain medications. METHODS: This study utilized a sample of adults presenting to a large residential addictions treatment program (N=351). Participants were administered

Differences in measurements of lumbar curvature related to gender and low back pain.

STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional. OBJECTIVES: To test the assumption that postural alignment and gender have a bearing on the specific type of low back pain (LBP) a person manifests. BACKGROUND: Measurements of static sagittal lumbar curvature are used by clinicians in the management of patients with LBP, but no investigator has reported differences in curvature related to specific categories of LBP. METHODS AND MEASURES: We used a computer-interfaced, 3-D, electromechanical digitizer to derive curvature angles for the region of the spine between T12-L1 and S2. Trained clinicians examined the

Opiate self-administration as a measure of chronic nociceptive pain in arthritic rats.

The study examined the validity of oral fentanyl self-administration (FSA) as a measure of the chronic nociceptive pain that develops in rats with adjuvant arthritis independently of acute noxious challenges. Arthritic rats self-administered more of a 0.008 mg/ml fentanyl solution (up to 3.4 g/rat per day) than non-arthritic controls (0.5 g/rat per day) and did so with a biphasic time course that reached peak during weeks 3 and 4 after inoculation with Mycobacterium butyricum. The time course paralleled both the disease process and the chronic pain. Continuous infusion of dexamethasone during

Psychophysical measures of sensitization to tonic heat discriminate chronic pain patients.

Sensitization to continued nociceptive stimulation is supposed to be involved in the development of chronic pain at several levels of the CNS, but experimental studies investigating the perceptual dynamics of sensitization in humans are rare, and the diagnostic validity of experimental pain models is not known. The present study used a tonic heat paradigm to assess early sensitization (15-100 s) to experimental pain in 30 chronic pain patients (15 musculoskeletal/back pain, 15 headache) and 23 healthy controls. Change in pain sensation during prolonged stimulation was measured by a dual sensit

[Pain therapy in tumor patients and in palliative medicine. 2: Invasive measures].

Anesthesiological and neurosurgical methods in the treatment of cancer pain have to be considered as parts of a holistic approach. To treat cancer pain patients appropriately, an interdisciplinary setting is essential. In the eyes of experienced pain specialists as well as physicians in palliative medicine invasive procedures are only of minor importance. Their use has been steadily decreasing while neuromodulatory (e.g. intraspinal opioids) or stimulatory (e.g. TENS, DBS, SCS) methods gained wider acceptance. The only neurolytic procedure which still has some importance is the neurolysis of t

The effects of dorsal column stimulation on measures of clinical and experimental pain in man.

Despite the extensive use of dorsal column stimulation (DCS) for the control of various chronic pain conditions, most clinicians report only modest success rates. Surprisingly, there has been little placebo-controlled investigation of its efficacy for altering either clinical or experimental pain perception. The current study compared the effects of DCS to placebo stimulation on clinical pain perception, perceived intensity of painful heat stimuli and visual stimuli, and the discrimination of small changes in noxious heat intensity and in light intensity. We found that DCS, but not placebo sti

Pain in Rett syndrome: a pilot study and a single case study on the assessment of pain and the construction of a suitable measuring scale.

BACKGROUND: Rett Syndrome (RTT) is a severe, neurodevelopmental disorder mainly caused by mutations in the MECP2 gene, affecting around 1 in 10,000 female births. Severe physical, language, and social impairments impose a wide range of limitations in the quality of life of the patients with RTT. Comorbidities of patients with RTT are varied and cause a lot of pain, but communicating this suffering is difficult for these patients due to their problems, such as apraxia that does not allow them to express pain in a timely manner, and their difficulties with expressive language that also do not pe
