Interactions of prefrontal cortex during eyeblink conditioning as a function of age.

Changes in regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in eleven elderly subjects during pairings of tone and air puff were compared to rCBF changes during pairings in young subjects. Although all subjects reported being aware of the relationship between tone and air puff, elderly subjects did not condition as well as young subjects and their rCBF measures were attenuated. Covarying the performance differences between young and old subjects did not change this conclusion suggesting that differences in neural activation during learning are related to binding of CS-US information prior to the impact of

Differential effects of two blockers of small conductance Ca2+-activated K+ channels, apamin and lei-Dab7, on learning and memory in rats.

SK channels are responsible for long-lasting hyperpolarization following action potential and contribute to the neuronal integration signal. This study evaluates the involvement of SK channels on learning and memory in rats, by comparing the effects of two SK channel blockers, i.e., apamin which recognizes SK2 and SK3 channels, and lei-Dab7 which binds SK2 channels only. lei-Dab7 totally competes and contests apamin binding on whole brain sections (IC(50): 11.4 nM). Using an olfactory associative task, intracerebroventricular blocker injections were tested on reference memory. Once the task wa

Exaggerated Self-Referencing in Body Dysmorphic Disorder.

The self-prioritisation effect demonstrates that people have a bias to learn and process self-relevant information compared to other-relevant information. This tendency may provide a tool to understand how body image and perception become disrupted in people with such a preoccupation with self-related perceptions, behaviours, and affect (body dysmorphic disorder [BDD]). Using an associative learning matching paradigm, participants were presented with geometric shapes that were paired with either themself, a named friend, or an unnamed stranger. Participants were presented with different label-

Toward Objective Grading of Reconstructed Breast Aesthetics: Three-dimensional Geometric and Color Features Associated with Interrater Variance.

BACKGROUND: Interrater variance in subjective grading of reconstructed breast aesthetics limits the assessment reliability and reduces the quality of training datasets for machine learning models designed for objective, image-based grading. This study aims to identify the 3-dimensional (3D) features associated with such variability across 8 aesthetic viewpoints commonly used in Japan by analyzing case pairs in which expert scoring and pairwise comparisons show disagreement. METHODS: Two-dimensional (2D) and 3D images of the reconstructed breasts were obtained from 174 patients. Aesthetic outc

The influence of repetitive thoughts of CS-US pairing on expectancy learning and evaluative conditioning: a fundamental study.

Repetitive thinking is a common phenomenon, also implicated in a variety of mental disorders. The content of repetitive thoughts can take the form of prediction of aversive events (in worry) or evoking negatively valenced information (in rumination), for instance. Investigating the influence of repetitive thinking through the lens of associative learning could help deepen our understanding of the mechanisms involved in its effects. In two experiments, non-clinical participants were exposed to CS-US pairings with the aim of creating non-threatening expectancy learning (Experiment 1) or evaluativ

The relationship between executive functioning and verbal and visual learning and memory.

Executive functions, which include an individual's ability to develop a response set, inhibit behaviors, plan, and reason, likely impact other areas of cognitive functioning, such as learning and memory. The present study examined the relationship between executive functioning and a wide array of standardized, clinical verbal and visual learning and memory measures in 212 patients referred for a neuropsychological evaluation. IQ was also included in the analyses. Results of the canonical correlation analyses indicated that the two cognitive domains shared 55-60% of variance, and two canonical

The effect of hippocampal subfield damage on rapid temporal integration through statistical learning and associative inference.

INTRODUCTION: The hippocampus (HPC) supports integration of information across time, often indexed by associative inference (AI) and statistical learning (SL) tasks. In AI, an indirect association between stimuli that never appeared together is inferred, whereas SL involves learning item relationships by extracting regularities across experiences. A recent model of hippocampal function (Schapiro et al., 2017) proposes that the HPC can support temporal integration in both paradigms through its two distinct pathways. METHODS: We tested this models' predictions in four patients with varying degr

Schema-dependent gene activation and memory encoding in neocortex.

When new learning occurs against the background of established prior knowledge, relevant new information can be assimilated into a schema and thereby expand the knowledge base. An animal model of this important component of memory consolidation reveals that systems memory consolidation can be very fast. In experiments with rats, we found that the hippocampal-dependent learning of new paired associates is associated with a striking up-regulation of immediate early genes in the prelimbic region of the medial prefrontal cortex, and that pharmacological interventions targeted at that area can prev

Clinical comparison of 10q26 overlapping deletions: delineating the critical region for urogenital anomalies.

The 10q26 deletion syndrome is a clinically heterogeneous disorder. The most common phenotypic characteristics include pre- and/or postnatal growth retardation, microcephaly, developmental delay/intellectual disability and a facial appearance consisting of a broad nasal bridge with a prominent nose, low-set malformed ears, strabismus, and a thin vermilion of the upper lip. In addition, limb and cardiac anomalies as well as urogenital anomalies are occasionally observed. In this report, we describe three unrelated females with 10q26 terminal deletions who shared clinical features of the syndrom

Effects of threat intensity on sensory preconditioning.

Although emotional intensity is known to shape fear generalization in direct conditioning, its impact on higher-order associative learning processes is unknown. Sensory preconditioning, a form of higher-order learning, allows us to infer potential threats in the absence of direct experience by linking neutral stimuli through prior associations. Here, we examined whether threat intensity during first-order conditioning amplifies sensory preconditioning. Participants first learned associations between neutral pairs of category images (preconditioning). In a subsequent Pavlovian conditioning phas

DSCrisk: A dual-view and substructure aware based method for drug-drug interaction risk-level prediction enhanced by contrastive learning.

Combination pharmacotherapy remains a fundamental strategy in contemporary clinical practice. However, the concurrent use of multiple drugs substantially increases the risk of harmful drug-drug interaction events (DDIEs). Developing reliable computational methods for DDIE detection is therefore essential, yet existing approaches still face notable limitations in modelling interaction-relevant chemistry, relational context, and interpretability. In this study, we propose DSCrisk, a deep‑learning framework that employs graph neural networks (GNNs) to encode a dual-view representation comprising

Motor learning and chunking in dyslexia.

The authors investigated whether participants with dyslexia had problems with executing discrete keying sequences and with switching between chunks in those sequences. Participants with dyslexia and participants in the control group executed 2 6-key sequences each, with 1 sequence consisting of 2 successive instances of 1 3-key segment (2 x 3 sequence) and the other not involving such a repetition (1 x 6 sequence). The authors assumed that during execution of the 2 x 3 sequence, the same chunk could be reused, whereas during execution of the 1 x 6 sequence a switch between chunks had to be mad

Sources of priming in text rereading: intact implicit memory for new associations in older adults and in patients with Alzheimer's disease.

The contributions of text meaning, new between-word associations, and single-word repetition to priming in text rereading in younger and older adults, and in patients with Alzheimer's disease. (AD), were assessed in Experiment 1. Explicit recognition memory for text was also assessed. Equivalent single-word and between-word priming was observed for all groups, even though patients with AD showed impaired explicit memory for individual words in the text. The contribution of generalized reading task skill to priming in meaningless text rereading in younger adults was assessed in Experiment 2. Ge

Crossed anomic aphasia: mild naming deficits following right brain damage in a dextral patient.

A detailed case study is reported of crossed aphasia (CA) in a dextral patient, bearing upon such controversial issues as intrahemispheric localisation of language function and hemispheric reversal of nonverbal function. DA, a man aged 37, developed a mild naming problem due to right temporal lobe haematoma. Apart from a mild acquired stutter, his continuous speech was fluent and had a normal proportion of open to closed class lexical items. His naming deficit appears to originate in the 'blocking' or 'disconnection' of the phonological lexicon: he could usually give a functional definition of

Learned Representation of Implied Serial Order in Posterior Parietal Cortex.

Monkeys can learn the implied ranking of pairs of images drawn from an ordered set, despite never seeing all of the images simultaneously and without explicit spatial or temporal cues. We recorded the activity of posterior parietal cortex (including lateral intraparietal area LIP) neurons while monkeys learned 7-item transitive inference (TI) lists with 2 items presented on each trial. Behavior and neuronal activity were significantly influenced by the ordinal relationship of the stimulus pairs, specifically symbolic distance (the difference in rank) and joint rank (the sum of the ranks). [Learned equivalence in schizophrenia: novel method for the measurement of memory functions of the hippocampus and basal ganglia].

The purpose of the present study was to investigate basal ganglia (BG) and medial temporal lobe (MTL) dependent learning in patients with schizophrenia. Acquired equivalence is a phenomenon in which prior training to treat two stimuli as equivalent (if two stimuli are associated with the same response) increases generalization between them. The learning of stimulus-response pairs is related to the BG, whereas the MTL system participates in stimulus generalization. Forty-three patients with DSM-IV schizophrenia and 28 matched healthy controls participated in the study. Volunteers received the a

Effects of Konjac glucosylceramides on cognitive function in cognitively unimpaired older adults with subjective cognitive concerns: a randomized, double-blind, controlled pilot study.

OBJECTIVES: Diet-derived bioactive lipids may help maintain cognitive resilience during the preclinical stage of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Konjac-derived glucosylceramide (kGlcCer), traditionally used for skin barrier support, has previously been shown to reduce brain amyloid accumulation in individuals with lower baseline amyloid burden. However, earlier studies used cognitive tests with limited sensitivity. The objective of this study was to investigate whether daily intake of kGlcCer improves cognitive performance and influences amyloid-related biomarkers in cognitively unimpaired older adu

Performance-based assessments of cognition are less susceptible to demographic effects than traditional memory tests: Evidence from MindCrowd.

OBJECTIVE: Demographic corrections (e.g., sex, education, race, ethnicity) are often applied when assessing cognition in adults; however, these corrections have significant limitations (e.g., using years of education does not capture the quality of, or access to, education). It is therefore critical to develop novel assessment options that are less susceptible to demographic factors. This study compared demographic effects on a verbal memory test and a performance-based test of cognition and daily functioning in older adults. Based on prior work, we hypothesized the performance-based tests wou

Studies of exclusion in individuals with severe mental retardation.

Exclusion performances in matching to sample are demonstrated when subjects select experimentally undefined comparison stimuli in the presence of undefined sample stimuli, apparently by rejecting defined comparison stimuli. Several studies have documented exclusion performances in a small number of individuals with severe mental retardation. These studies also demonstrated the potential of exclusion procedures for establishing prerequisites for emergent naming performances. The present study examined exclusion in a larger cohort of subjects. Initial experiments asked two questions. First, how
