Epidemiological patterns of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Panama. I. Epidemics among small groups of settlers.

Epidemic of cutaneous leishmanniasis among a small group of people established in a Panamanian forested area was studied. The first settlers arrived in June 1971, and by June 1973 there were 37 persons, 33 of whom had no previous history of the disease. Epidemiological surveys were made in June 1973 and March 1974. The disease developed in 14 (42.4%) of the 33 susceptible persons by June 1973, with an exposure time ranging from one to 14 months. The last case occurred in April 1973, and no new cases were observed during the ensuing 11 months. Two (15.4%) of 13 dogs examined were found with cut

Genetic Diversity of Potential Drug Resistance Markers in Plasmodium vivax Isolates from Panama, Mesoamerica.

This study evaluated the genetic diversity and potential drug resistance markers in Plasmodium vivax isolates from Panama, a country in Mesoamerica, aiming to eliminate local malaria transmission. We analyzed 70 P. vivax samples collected between 2004 and 2020 from endemic regions in Eastern and Western Panama, as well as imported cases. Four drug resistance genes (pvcrt-o, pvmdr1, pvdhfr, and pvdhps) were sequenced and analyzed. Our findings reveal low genetic diversity in P. vivax populations from Western Panama, indicating clonal expansion, while Eastern Panama exhibits higher diversity, in

Neoclypeodytes Young from Panama, with description of two new species (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae: Hydroporinae: Bidessini).

Minute Bidessini diving beetles of the genus Neoclypeodytes Young, 1967 from Panama are reviewed. Two new species, Neoclypeodytes balkei sp. nov. and N. fortunensis sp. nov. are described from Campana, Panama Province in central Panama, and La Fortuna, Chiriqui province in western Panama, respectively. Both species differ from all congeners by the colour pattern of the elytra and the shape of the male genitalia. Additionally, we provide a short diagnosis, illustrations and a new record for N. curtulus (Sharp, 1882). Furthermore, we report on the presence of scale-like setae at the apex of medi

Cutaneous leishmaniasis in Cuban immigrants to Texas who traveled through the Darién Jungle, Panama.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis is rarely seen in the United States. Four Cuban immigrants traveled along the same route at different times from Cuba to Ecuador, then northward, including through the Darién Jungle in Panama. These patients had chronic ulcerative non-healing skin lesions and were given a diagnosis of leishmaniasis.

Enteric parasites and enteroaggregative Escherichia coli in children from Cañazas County, Veraguas Province, Panama.

This study was designed to examine the height-for-age z-scores (HAZ), and the prevalence of intestinal inflammation, gastrointestinal infections with parasites, and enteroaggregative Escherichia coli (EAEC) in rural Panamanian children. Stool microscopy and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing for EAEC detected Giardia lamblia (32%, 32 of 100) and EAEC (13%, 11 of 87) in the study participants, respectively. Anthropometric analyses showed that those children who were > 12 months of age had lower HAZ scores (mean of -1.449) than the reference population. As a group, the children in the study

Advancing the battle against panama disease: a critical appraisal of global biocontrol research and applications.

BACKGROUND: Banana, the fourth most important food crop globally, is severely threatened by Panama disease caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense (Foc). The continued spread of Foc tropical race 4 (TR4), with recent first reports in Peru and Venezuela, demands renewed attention and a critical reevaluation of eco-friendly management strategies. Biocontrol has emerged as a promising approach, but its efficacy varies widely across studies and geographic regions, and a comprehensive synthesis of research trends and outcomes is lacking. AIM OF REVIEW: This review critically synthesizes the pa

Antimalarial Activity of Sargassum fluitans and Sargassum natans Stranded Along the Caribbean Coast of Panama.

Malaria remains a critical global health challenge, worsened by the emergence of drug-resistant Plasmodium falciparum strains. Marine macroalgae offer an underexplored chemical space for novel treatments; however, previous efforts have primarily focused on organic solvent extractions, leaving the potential of sustainable, water-soluble preparations overlooked. This study evaluated the antimalarial activity and safety of aqueous extracts from pelagic Sargassum fluitans and S. natans obtained from seasonal strandings along the Caribbean coast of Panama. Algal species were taxonomically identifie

Environmental and epidemiological drivers of dengue forecasting across heterogeneous transmission settings in Brazil and Panama.

BACKGROUND: Dengue fever is the fastest-growing mosquito-borne viral disease globally, with unprecedented epidemics reported across the Americas in 2024. Brazil and Panama experienced record transmission that strained public health systems and highlighted limitations in existing surveillance and early warning approaches. Despite growing evidence that climatic variability, land-use change, and other environmental factors influence dengue transmission, scalable approaches integrating heterogeneous environmental datasets remain limited. METHODS: We integrated climatic, environmental, demographic

Cardiometabolic Status of Adults Living with HIV in Panama-Baseline Results of the Colón C3 Study.

Background. Cardiometabolic diseases (CMDs) have become a major health concern among adults living with HIV (ALWH) as antiretroviral therapy (ART) extends life expectancy. Metabolic syndrome (MetS)-a cluster of abdominal obesity, hypertension, hyperglycemia, hypertriglyceridemia, and hypoalphalipoproteinemia-is a key predictor of CMD risk. Despite high HIV prevalence in Panama, data on MetS among ALWH are scarce. Thus, the Colón C3 Study aimed to estimate the prevalence of MetS and its criteria in a large cohort of ALWH in Colón, Panama. Methods. Between April-December 2024, 659 ALWH aged ≥18

Implementation of bamboo and monkey-pot traps for the sampling cavity-breeding mosquitoes in Darién, Panama.

Despite the importance of Aedes, Haemagogus and Sabethes in the transmission of yellow fever virus (YFV) and the public health impacts of recent YFV epidemics in the Americas, relatively little has been reported on the biology and ecology of these vectors. Many Aedes, Haemagogus and Sabethes spp. in the American tropics inhabit and develop in the forest canopy and are difficult to sample with conventional entomological surveillance methods. We tested the utility of two previously developed phytotelmata-style oviposition traps (bamboo Guadua angustifolia) and (monkey-pot Lecythis minor), for co

A Nonlive Preparation of Chromobacterium sp. Panama (Csp_P) Is a Highly Effective Larval Mosquito Biopesticide.

Given the continued high prevalence of mosquito-transmitted diseases, there is a clear need to develop novel disease and vector control strategies. Biopesticides of microbial origin represent a promising source of new approaches to target disease-transmitting mosquito populations. Here, we describe the development and characterization of a novel mosquito biopesticide, derived from an air-dried, nonlive preparation of the bacterium Chromobacterium sp. Panama (family: Neisseriaceae). This preparation rapidly and effectively kills the larvae of prominent mosquito vectors, including the dengue and

Ascaris and hookworm transmission in preschool children in rural Panama: role of subsistence agricultural activities.

This longitudinal study explored whether aspects of subsistence agriculture were associated with presence and intensity of Ascaris and hookworm in preschool children in rural Panama. Questionnaires were used to collect data on household socio-demographics, child exposure to agriculture and household agricultural practices. Stool samples were collected from children (6 months-5 years) at 3 time points, with albendazole administered after each to clear infections, resulting in 1 baseline and 2 reinfection measures. A novel Agricultural Activity Index (AAI) was developed using principal component

Causes of mortality in anuran amphibians from an ex situ survival assurance colony in Panama.

The success of ex situ survival assurance populations as tools for amphibian conservation depends on the health and reproductive success of founder populations. Necropsy examination and histopathology of animals that die in assurance populations are useful for the identification of population-limiting disease problems and can help to direct applied research efforts in areas such as amphibian husbandry and nutrition. This study reviewed postmortem findings in 167 frogs from 13 species that died in a large Panamanian rescue and survival assurance population between 2006 and 2011. Common problems

Seasonal pattern of avian Plasmodium-infected mosquitoes and implications for parasite transmission in central Panama.

Aedeomyia squamipennis and Culex (Melanoconion) ocossa, two ubiquitous Neotropical mosquito species, are likely involved in the transmission of several bird pathogens in Gamboa, central Panama. However, knowledge on their eco-epidemiological profiles is still incomplete. Our goal in this study was to investigate temporal trends of vector density and their relationship with avian plasmodia prevalence. This information is central to identifying the risk posed by each vector species to the avian community locally. We found that A. squamipennis maintains stable population size across climatic seas
