Vitamin B12 deficiency is a significant public health problem globally. Although it is a well-known cause of macrocytic anaemia and in advanced cases, pancytopenia, there remains a relative paucity of cases reported in pregnancy. It is associated with an increased risk of pregnancy complications and adverse birth outcomes such as neural tube defects, preterm birth, low birth weight, neurological sequelae and intrauterine death. It has a predilection for individuals aged >60 years. It has been implicated in a spectrum of neuropsychiatric disorders and it may also exert indirect cardiovascular e

OBJECTIVE: (1) To report an unusual etiology for nontraumatic hemoabdomen in cats, and (2) to describe onset and recovery from severe, unexpected pancytopenia seen after surgical removal of a large intra-abdominal myelolipoma.
CASE SUMMARY: A 14-year-old neutered male domestic shorthair cat was presented for emergent treatment of suspected nontraumatic hemoabdomen. A hyperechoic mass, with ultrasonographic echogenicity similar to fat, was found in the right cranial abdomen and believed to be associated with the mesentery. Cytological examination of abdominal fluid identified marked extramedul

Vitamin B12 (B12) deficiency in infancy can present with nonspecific symptoms. We report a 5-month old exclusively breastfed full-term infant with emesis, lethargy, progressive pancytopenia, hemolysis, hypofibrinogenemia, elevated lactate dehydrogenase and a hypercellular bone marrow with dyserythropoiesis. The B12 level in the serum was undetectable. The infant's lethargy resolved within 48 hours of intramuscular B12 injection, followed by rapid improvement of pancytopenia. The asymptomatic mother had a normal hemoglobin and mean corpuscular volume, but undetectable B12 level and positive ant

Methotrexate (MTX) is an antifolic drug used in the treatment of immune-mediated and neoplastic diseases. Initiation or dosage changes in MTX therapy can cause mucositis and bone marrow suppression. Skin lesions due to acute MTX toxicity are rare, but they serve as a herald for later-onset pancytopenia. Therefore, identification of those cutaneous lesions might help to initiate rescue strategies at an early stage. Here we describe a case with mucocutaneous ulcerations and pancytopenia due to overdosed MTX.

A 58 year old woman presents with a progressive fatigue and dyspnea associated with paresthesia. Laboratory tests show pancytopenia with hypersegmented neutrophiles, macrocytic hyporegenerative anemia and arguments for hemolysis, in particular highly increased LDH. This constellation strongly suggests vitamin B12 deficiency, which was confirmed with an undetectable cobalamine concentration in the blood of our patient. The etiologic work up shows the presence of anti-parietal cells antibodies at a titer of 1/640, diagnostic of Biermer anemia.

Older patients referred for further investigation of pancytopenia is common in internal medicine and geriatric clinics and it is important to consider a wide range of underlying diagnoses. We present an unusual case of febrile pancytopenia in a nonagenarian who was diagnosed with visceral leishmaniasis. This is a rare and unusual diagnosis in nonagenarians, although the leishmaniasis is endemic on the Mediterranean coast of Spain. It is important to identify it because it is treatable and curable.

BACKGROUND: Pancytopenia is a rare complication of hyperthyroidism. Various mechanisms have been described such as immunological, bone marrow suppression. The possibility of hyperthyroidism should be considered in patients with unexplained pancytopenia. There are many case reports showing the association between hyperthyroidism and pancytopenia. All of these reports show association between Graves disease and pancytopenia but our case shows association between Multinodular goitre and pancytopenia. Besides it is uncommon to find such association in a surgical patient.

Clinical presentation of sarcoidosis in children is very variable and dependant upon age. Herein, we report the first association of massive splenomegaly and pancytopenia as the revealing mode of sarcoidosis in an 8-year-old girl who, despite bone marrow involvement, had a remarkable good outcome following steroid therapy.

OBJECTIVE: To report pancytopenia caused by temozolomide, a second-generation alkylating agent.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION AND INTERVENTION: A 22-year-old patient presenting with seizures and confusion was seen in the emergency room. Cranial magnetic resonance imaging revealed a mass. After surgery, the patient was diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme and was given temozolomide at 150 mg/m(2) on days 1 through 5 every 4 weeks. During the last cycle of temozolomide, grade 3 thrombocytopenia persisted. Possible causes of pancytopenia including vitamin B(12) deficiency were investigated.

OBJECTIVE: To study the clinical features and etiological spectrum of pancytopenia in children.
METHODS: The clinical data of 174 children with pancytopenia between September 2003 and January 2010 were retrospectively reviewed.
RESULTS: Pale face was the most common clinical manifestation (147 cases, 84.5%), followed by bleeding (87 cases, 50.0%) and fever (41 cases, 23.6%). Mild to moderate anemia, severe thrombocytopenia and mild leucopenia were common in complete blood count. Of the 174 children, pancytopenia was attributed to hematopoietic system diseases in 155 cases (89.1%) and non-hem

Typical presentations of hyperthyroidism are palpitation, nervousness, tremor, malaise, and weight loss. Hyperthyroidism affects nearly every system in the body, and some patients may manifest neurologic or hematologic symptoms. Atypical presentations of hyperthyroidism often pose a great challenge in diagnosis and treatment. We report a case of Basedow's paraplegia and pancytopenia that was precipitated by hyperthyroidism. The unusual manifestations led to unnecessary examinations and delayed the treatment of hyperthyroidism. The classical symptoms of Basedow's paraplegia are subacute symmetr

We report on the clinico-haematological profile of pancytopenia in children from the Departments of Pediatrics and Pathology, Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, India, over a period of 30 months. Pancytopenia was defined as: haemoglobin <10 g/dL, absolute neutrophil count 1.5 x 10(9)/L and platelet count <100 x 10(9)/L. A detailed history, clinical examination and haematological parameters were recorded. Bone marrow aspiration and trephine biopsy were carried out in all cases. One hundred and five cases aged 1.5-18 years, with a mean age of 8.6 years, were included in the

A 48-year-old man was referred to our hospital in December, 2005 because of general fatigue, gait disturbance and bradycardia. He had a history of polysurgery due to recurrent ileus and had been treated with home total parenteral nutrition for the short-bowel syndrome since 2003. Clinical findings on admission included marked emaciation and severe weakness of the extremities. Pancytopenia was noted in the peripheral blood. The serum levels of copper and ceruloplasmin were 3 microg/dl and 3 mg/dl, respectively, while Vit. B12 and folate were within the normal range. The bone marrow demonstrated
