Cataracts and strabismus associated with hand rearing using artificial milk formulas in Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris spp tigris) cubs.

The aim of this investigation is to describe the potential contributing nutritional factors involved in the development of ophthalmic and dermatologic changes in four Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris spp tigris) cubs fed an artificial milk formula. The affected animals were compared with two other tiger cubs that had been nursed by their dam naturally. After the first clinical signs appeared, the tiger cubs underwent ophthalmic evaluation. Severe symmetric generalized alopecia over the trunk, sparing the head and distal portion of the front and rear limbs, bilateral cataracts and strabismus were

Pathological findings in 61 free-ranging leopards (Panthera pardus) from the Greater Kruger National Park, South Africa. Part One: parasites.

The Kruger National Park and surrounding protected areas in South Africa are home to a core unmanaged population of approximately 1,200 free-ranging leopards (Panthera pardus). Leopard populations outside of protected areas are in decline due to trophy hunting, habitat fragmentation and human-wildlife conflict. Apart from single descriptions of parasites detected by faecal or necropsy examinations and serology, very little information is available on parasitic conditions in free-ranging leopards. This paper provides baseline information on parasites in free-ranging leopards that may be relevan

Ingestion of high-pressure hose fragments and their possible association with a suspected toxic syndrome in two African lions (Panthera leo).

Foreign body ingestion is a commonly observed condition in domestic felines and, to a lesser extent, in captive wild felids. This report describes two cases of high-pressure hose ingestion in African lions (Panthera leo) and explores a possible association with a toxic syndrome. Two African lions, a three-year-old male (Case 1) and a ten-year-old female (Case 2), housed in the same enclosure, exhibited neurological signs suggestive of toxic syndrome. The male (Case 1) initially presented with ataxia, loss of pelvic limb tone and sialorrhea, showing only a mild response to clinical treatment. D

First report of SARS-CoV-2 co-infection with chronic dermatophytosis in a lion (Panthera leo) ex situ at Colombia.

BACKGROUND: Coronaviruses affecting humans traditionally caused mild respiratory infections. However, new zoonotic strains such as MERS-CoV (2012) and SARS-CoV-2 (2019) have led to severe acute respiratory syndromes. Since 2020, SARS-CoV-2 has been detected in several animal species, including pets (dogs, cats, ferrets), zoo animals (lions, tigers, snow leopards), and wild fauna (deer). Felids appear especially susceptible, with confirmed infections and deaths in large cats under human care. This raises concerns about reverse zoonosis and the need for strict biosecurity in zoological instituti

Cloning-based analysis of MHC class II DRB variation and Enterocytozoon bieneusi association in the Amur tiger (Panthera tigris altaica).

The polymorphism of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II classical genes is closely related to pathogen resistance, among which the second exon of the DRB gene has the highest variability. In this study, we analyzed exon 2 of the MHC class II DRB gene in 32 captive Amur tigers (Panthera tigris altaica) using a cloning-based sequencing approach to assess genetic diversity and its association with infection by Enterocytozoon bieneusi. A total of 16 DRB alleles were identified, including six novel variants. One allele (Pati-DRB*02) showed a significant positive association with infecti

A putatively novel papillomavirus associated with cutaneous plaques and squamous cell carcinoma in captive North American snow leopards (Panthera uncia).

Cutaneous plaques and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) are common in captive North American snow leopards (SLs) (Panthera uncia). Our objective was to determine whether these lesions are potentially associated with papillomavirus(es). Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was performed on 3 cutaneous plaques using degenerate primers for papillomaviruses. A putatively novel papillomavirus was identified that shared 76% sequence identity to Felis catus papillomavirus 2. Specific PCR for this virus was performed on 5 cutaneous SCC samples and 7 normal skin samples, which were all positive. In situ hybridi

Minimally traumatic extraction of fractured bilateral maxillary canine teeth using a piezoelectric surgical unit in an African lion (Panthera leo).

IMPORTANCE: Canine extraction of large carnivores can pose significant risk due to extensive tissue damage during aggressive bone reduction. This report highlights a rare instance in which the use of a piezoelectric surgical unit (PSU) for maxillary canine extraction in a large carnivore resulted in successful outcomes with minimal tissue damage. CASE PRESENTATION: A 10-year-old male African lion presented with decreased appetite because of bilateral maxillary canine fractures. Intraoral radiographs revealed enlarged root canals and periapical radiolucency of the fractured canines, leading to

Can Scat Analysis Describe the Feeding Habits of Big Cats? A Case Study with Jaguars (Panthera onca) in Southern Pantanal, Brazil.

Large cats feeding habits have been studied through two main methods: scat analysis and the carcasses of prey killed by monitored animals. From November 2001 to April 2004, we studied jaguar predation patterns using GPS telemetry location clusters on a cattle ranch in southern Pantanal. During this period, we recorded 431 carcasses of animals preyed upon by monitored jaguars. Concurrently, we collected 125 jaguar scats opportunistically. We compared the frequencies of prey found through each method. We also compared the prey communities using Bray-Curtis similarity coefficient. These compariso

Severe infection caused by nymphs of Armillifer armillatus (Pentastomida, Porocephalidae) in a leopard, Panthera pardus, in the Kruger National Park, South Africa.

The necropsy of an adult male leopard, Panthera pardus, shot in the Kruger National Park, revealed the presence of large numbers of Armillifer armillatus nymphs in the intestine, liver, spleen, mesentery, peritoneal fold, mediastinum and lungs. The animal had been observed to be blind in the right eye and severely debilitated. The infection with A. armillatus clearly contributed to its emaciation and anaemia. Armillifer armillatus is a parasite of snakes, using mammals that form part of the snakes' prey as intermediate hosts. It is also one of the pentastomids with the highest zoonotic potenti

Exploratory Comparison of Behavior and Welfare-Related Indicators in Captive Lions (Panthera leo) Across Three Zoo Enclosures Using Machine-Learning Quantification.

Behavioral monitoring is central to welfare assessment but is difficult to conduct continuously. We used machine-learning-based video analysis to describe lion (Panthera leo) behavior across three zoo enclosures differing in available space, structural complexity and social composition. Interpretation of the Aalborg Zoo profile is additionally constrained by a major recent social change, as the enclosure's adult male was euthanized five days before data collection began. Continuous recordings collected over 10 days were processed with LabGym, filtered for low-confidence predictions and likely

Genetic Diversity and Biological Characteristics of a Novel Feline Calicivirus Strain Isolated From Zoo-Captive South China Tiger (Panthera tigris amoyensis).

Feline calicivirus (FCV) is a common pathogen causing upper respiratory tract disease in domestic cats. Nonetheless, its threat and genetic features in endangered wild felids remain poorly understood. In this study, a novel FCV strain from a captive South China tiger (Panthera tigris amoyensis) was isolated, designated as FCV LYH1224. Viral RNA was detected in multiple tissues of the deceased tiger, including the heart, liver, spleen, lungs, and kidneys, suggesting broad tissue tropism and FCV contributed substantially to the fatal outcome. In vitro growth kinetics showed that the virus replic

BILIARY DUCTAL PLATE MALFORMATION WITH SECONDARY PORTAL HYPERTENSION AND MULTIPLE ACQUIRED SHUNTS IN A LITTER OF AMUR TIGERS (PANTHERA TIGRIS ALTAICA).

Congenital abnormalities in tigers (Panthera tigris) are infrequently reported but have included ectrodactyly, cataracts, and vestibular disease. Primary hepatic disease has been documented in multiple nondomestic felid species but is considered uncommon in tigers. To the authors' knowledge, there are no previous reports of congenital abnormalities of the liver in tigers. In May 2022, two male Amur tiger cubs (Panthera tigris altaica) were born at a zoological institution via cesarean section to address dystocia, following the natural birth of a female cub. Between two and six months of age, a

Heterologous in vitro fertilization and embryo production for assessment of jaguar (Panthera onca Linnaeus, 1758) frozen-thawed semen in different extenders.

Heterologous in vitro fertilization (IVF) is an important tool for assessing fertility of endangered mammals such as the jaguar, considering difficult access to females for artificial insemination and to obtain homologous oocytes. We aimed to evaluate the fertility of jaguar sperm cryopreserved with different extenders, using domestic cat oocytes to assess the development of hybrid embryos. Semen from four captive jaguars was obtained by electroejaculation. Samples were cryopreserved in powdered coconut water (ACP-117c) or Tris extender containing 20% egg yolk and 6% glycerol.
