Styloidogenic jugular venous compression syndrome (SJVCS) is a rare variant of Eagle Syndrome caused by compression of the internal jugular vein (IJV) by an elongated styloid process. We describe a 47-year-old woman in whom papilledema was incidentally detected during a routine optometric examination. Initial neuroimaging did not adequately image the jugular veins in the neck but demonstrated unremarkable intracranial appearances. The patient remained asymptomatic with a normal lumbar puncture opening pressure. Over 3 years, the papilledema gradually worsened in the absence of symptoms of rais

BACKGROUND: Fulminant papilledema is a neuro-ophthalmologic emergency that can lead to permanent vision loss as a result of optic neuropathy. Despite appropriate treatment of intracranial hypertension and improvement of papilledema, some patients continue to experience worsening vision. In some cases, comorbid micronutrient deficiencies, which are an additional cause of optic neuropathy, may contribute to this decline. This case series highlights patients with papilledema whose vision worsened despite improvement in papilledema and who were found to have comorbid nutritional deficiencies.

Background: Idiopathic intracranial hypertension without papilledema (IIHWOP) is increasingly recognized, but its clinical characteristics and treatment-related outcomes remain insufficiently defined. This study aimed to compare patients with idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) with and without papilledema. Methods: This retrospective observational cohort study included adult patients diagnosed with IIH at a tertiary neurology and referral center. Demographic, clinical, neuro-ophthalmologic, radiological, lumbar puncture, and treatment-related characteristics were compared according to

BACKGROUND Myxopapillary ependymomas, a subtype of spinal ependymomas, are relatively rare in children and adolescents, primarily affecting the lower spinal region; however, they can also metastasize along the spinal axis, as well as intracranially. The clinical presentation typically involves signs and symptoms of conus medullaris or cauda equina dysfunction, including paralysis and sensory loss, accompanied by lower back pain. Ocular complications are not commonly seen in myxopapillary ependymomas. This case report emphasizes the need to consider spinal tumors in patients presenting with bil

BACKGROUND: Optic disc swelling poses a diagnostic challenge due to its multiple underlying pathological causes. This study aimed to investigate the use of fluorescein angiography (FLA) in combination with optical coherence tomography (OCT) as a diagnostic tool for differentiating between papilledema and papillitis in cases of optic disc swelling.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 12 patients were included in the study in whom both FLA and OCT of the optic disc were performed to evaluate the optic disc swelling in cases of papilledema (7 patients, 14 eyes) and papillitis (5 patients, 7 eyes).

PURPOSE: Papilledema is a very rare complication of leukemia therapies, and particularly tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) therapy. Targeted oncologic therapies are becoming increasingly popular, so it is increasingly important to report rare adverse effects. We present a case of probable papilledema in the setting of ponatinib therapy for acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
OBSERVATIONS: Our patient is a 48-year-old male who was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia. He underwent stem cell transplantation and shortly after was placed on ponatinib therapy. After initiation of ponatinib, he began

Camurati-Engelmann disease (CED) causes bone pain, muscle weakness, and cranial nerve symptoms due to abnormal thickening of the long bones of the limbs and the cortex of the skull. The pathophysiology of CED is a gain-of-function variant of transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGFB1). The ophthalmological symptoms of CED are usually caused by increased intracranial pressure and optic canal stenosis. Here, we report the case of a patient in whom prednisolone was effective against papilledema caused by CED. In this case, when papilledema was observed in both fundi, the patient showed increased bo

This case features a young healthy male who was diagnosed with immunoglobulin A (IgA) nephropathy after presenting with blurry vision that was caused by hypertensive retinopathy and papilledema. In this report, we examine the relationship between hypertension and increased intracranial pressure (ICP), along with the ocular signs of IgA nephropathy that may present in the setting of kidney disease.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the accuracy and safety of oral fluorescein angiography (OFA) in differentiating papilledema from pseudopapilledema in pediatric patients.
DESIGN: Retrospective evaluation of a diagnostic test.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed medical records of all children ≤18 years of age who presented to the Arkansas Children's Hospital between May 2018 and August 2021 with suspected optic disc (OD) swelling that had OFA and images >30 minutes after oral ingestion. Two masked specialists interpreted the images as either OD leakage, no leakage, or borderline leakage. Optic disc sw

Use of medications including vitamin A derivatives and tetracyclines have been associated with papilledema and raised intracranial pressure. A 46-year-old woman was referred to neuro-ophthalmology for bilateral optic disc oedema and had a 7-year history of cyclosporine use after renal transplantation. She had preserved visual function and moderate bilateral optic disc oedema. Magnetic resonance imaging and magnetic resonance venography of the brain were normal apart from signs of raised intracranial pressure. Lumbar puncture revealed an elevated opening pressure of 40 cm of water with normal c

Joubert Syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by absence or underdevelopment of the cerebellar vermis. Various ocular and oculomotor findings are frequently seen in cases with Joubert Syndrome. However, only three adolescent patients with Joubert Syndrome were diagnosed with optic disc drusen. Here we present an infant case of Joubert Syndrome referred with papilledema and diagnosed with optic disc drusen.

PURPOSE: Our aim was to evaluate if optical coherence tomography (OCT) can be used as an alternative for fundoscopy to screen for increased intracranial pressure (ICP) in children with craniosynostosis
METHODS: We performed a prospective cohort study at the Dutch Craniofacial Centre. We included 38 patients with nonsyndromic scaphocephaly and Crouzon's syndrome aged 3-8 years old, in whom we scored complaints suggestive of increased ICP and performed fundoscopy and OCT. Main outcome measures total retinal thickness (TRT) which was measured on 58 OCT scans.
RESULTS: Forty-three percent of fun

CINCA syndrome is an autoinflammatory disease in childhood characterized by multisystemic manifestations: cutaneous, articular, and neurological including sensory organs. We report the case of homozygous twins affected by CINCA syndrome. The diagnosis was evoked on the basis of multiple systemic symptoms (multiple episodes of fever of unknown origin, mental retardation, short stature, meningitis, hearing loss, bilateral papilledema) and confirmed by the presence of a CIAS1 mutation on genetic analysis. After few months of treatment by anakinra (an interleukin-1 receptor antagonist) the childre

MPS VI (mucopolysaccharidosis VI, known as Maroteaux-Lamy syndrome) is a multi-systemic inherited disease, resulting from a deficiency of N-acetylgalactosamine-4-sulfatase, causing accumulation of the glycosaminoglycan (GAG) dermatan sulfate in all tissues. It is one of almost 50 lysosomal storage disorders. Ocular pathology is common in patients with MPS VI, with complications including ocular hypertension, progressive corneal clouding, optic nerve swelling (or papilledema) often associated with communicating hydrocephalus (Ashworth et al., Eye 20(5), 553-563, 2006; Goldberg et al., AJO 69(6)
