Maternal depression, anxiety, psychoticism and paranoid ideation have effects on developmental delay types of infants: A study with clinical infant-mother dyads.

BACKGROUND: Developmental delay in infancy includes cognitive-language delay, fine motor delay, gross motor delay, and social-self help delay. Delay in one intellectual domain frequently effects the other areas of development; therefore, determining risk factors are essential. In this study, we evaluated the relationship between maternal psychiatric symptoms and developmental delay types of infants who have not a known risk factor and are expected to show healthy development but have some behavioral and developmental problems. METHODS: The sample consisted of 79 infant-mother (26 girls, 53 bo

Does symptom type moderate the relationship between insight and outcome in cognitive behavioral therapy for psychosis? A preliminary investigation.

Insight has emerged as a potential predictor variable in cognitive behavioral therapy for psychosis (CBTp). However, previous research has produced mixed results. The present study aimed to clarify whether symptom type is a moderating variable. A group of psychotic patients (n = 44) were assessed through pre- and post-treatment in a CBTp specialty track in a partial hospital-based program in the USA. The Insight Scale was used to measure insight, and psychotic symptomatology was assessed using the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview and the Behavior and Symptom Identification Scale.

Comparison of social cognitive functioning in schizophrenia and high functioning autism: more convergence than divergence.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with schizophrenia and individuals with high-functioning autism (HFA) seem to share some social, behavioral and biological features. Although marked impairments in social cognition have been documented in both groups, little empirical work has compared the social cognitive functioning of these two clinical groups. METHOD: Forty-four individuals with schizophrenia, 36 with HFA and 41 non-clinical controls completed a battery of social cognitive measures that have been linked previously to specific brain regions. RESULTS: The results indicate that the individuals with s

Dentofacial disharmony: psychological status of patients seeking treatment consultation.

A sample of 194 patients whose dentofacial disharmonies were severe enough to warrant an orthognathic surgical treatment option completed the SCL-90-R, a 90-item assessment tool used to measure current level of psychological distress. Two global and nine primary dimension scores of psychological distress were computed. The average interpersonal sensitivity, psychoticism, and obsessive-compulsive dimension scores were higher than the nonpsychiatric patient population norms for both males and females, but the confidence intervals for these dimensions were still in the upper end of the normal ran

Violent crime arrests and paranoid schizophrenia: the White House case studies.

We have previously reported on typically paranoid schizophrenic patients who attempted to see the President or other prominent American political figures based on hallucinations or delusional beliefs. By obtaining arrest records on these White House Cases (WHCs), we were able to determine which individuals had murder or assault arrests before and/or after their WHC hospitalizations. During the 9-12 years following discharge, 31 of the 217 male WHCs (for whom adequate clinical records were available) had murder or assault arrests. Demographic characteristics such as prior violent crime arrest a

Differences in platelet monoamine oxidase activity in subgroups of schizophrenic and depressive disorders.

Platelet monoamine oxidase (MAO) activity was measured in patients with nonaffective schizophrenic disorders (i.e., without prominent symptoms of depressions or manias), and in patients with schizophrenia-related depressions. MAO activity was significantly lower than control values in a subgroup of 16 patients with nonaffective schizophrenic disorders (most of whom were paranoid) characterized by the presence of auditory hallucinations and delusions. Platelet MAO activity was not reduced in 16 other nonaffective schizophrenic patients without auditory hallucinations. Platelet MAO activity was

Categorization of aggressive acts committed by chronically assaultive state hospital patients.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined factors motivating inpatient aggression in a sample of chronically assaultive state hospital patients. METHODS: Inpatients who had committed three or more assaults over a one-year period were identified by using an incident report database. Aggressive episodes were categorized as impulsive, organized, or psychotic by using a procedure for classifying assaultive acts based on record review. Each assault type was further subcategorized. The relationship between assault type, victim (staff or patient), and legal status of the assaulter was also assessed. RESULTS:

The Perseverative Thinking Questionnaire in Patients with Persecutory Delusions.

BACKGROUND: Ruminative negative thinking has typically been considered as a factor maintaining common emotional disorders and has recently been shown to maintain persecutory delusions in psychosis. The Perseverative Thinking Questionnaire (PTQ) (Ehring et al., 2011) is a transdiagnostic measure of ruminative negative thinking that shows promise as a "content-free" measure of ruminative negative thinking. AIMS: The PTQ has not previously been studied in a psychosis patient group. In this study we report for the first time on the psychometric properties of Ehring et al.'s PTQ in such a group.

Effects of cognitive behaviour therapy for worry on persecutory delusions in patients with psychosis (WIT): a parallel, single-blind, randomised controlled trial with a mediation analysis.

BACKGROUND: Worry might be a contributory causal factor in the occurrence of persecutory delusions in patients with psychotic disorders. Therefore we postulated that reducing worry with cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) would reduce persecutory delusions. METHODS: For our two-arm, assessor-blinded, randomised controlled trial (Worry Intervention Trial [WIT]), we recruited patients aged 18-65 years with persistent persecutory delusions but non-affective psychosis from two centres: the Oxford Health National Health Service (NHS) Foundation Trust (Oxford, UK) and the Southern Health NHS Foundati

Case Report: Cotard's syndrome associated with suicide attempt-related delirium.

Cotard's syndrome is a rare psychopathological phenomenon characterized by nihilistic delusions concerning one's body, existence, or death. We report the case of an 88-year-old man with no previous psychiatric treatment who was admitted following a medication-overdose suicide attempt in the context of a severe depressive crisis. After intensive and internal medical treatment, he developed a fluctuating confusional state characterized by disturbances of orientation, impaired attention, paranoid ideation, and nihilistic beliefs. During this period, he repeatedly stated that he was dead, had been

Synaptosomal Proteome of the Orbitofrontal Cortex from Schizophrenia Patients Using Quantitative Label-Free and iTRAQ-Based Shotgun Proteomics.

Schizophrenia is a chronic and incurable neuropsychiatric disorder that affects about one percent of the world population. The proteomic characterization of the synaptosome fraction of the orbitofrontal cortex is useful for providing valuable information about the molecular mechanisms of synaptic functions in these patients. Quantitative analyses of synaptic proteins were made with eight paranoid schizophrenia patients and a pool of eight healthy controls free of mental diseases. Label-free and iTRAQ labeling identified a total of 2018 protein groups. Statistical analyses revealed 12 and 55 si

[Medical-psychologic study of somatic patients].

An attitude towards the disease in patients with chronic somatic disturbances is determined by three factors: the nature of the disease, personality type and the attitude to this particular disease in the microsocial environment to which the patient belongs. Three main types of attitudes towards their disease in patients with chronic somatic disturbances are described: anxious-depressive, melancholic, obsessive-phobic, hypochondriacal, neurasthenical, dysphoric, euphoric, anozognosic, apathetic, egopathic (a fanatic preoccupation with work), sensitive, egocentric, paranoiac. These types may be

De Clérambault's Syndrome (Erotomania) and claims of psychiatric malpractice.

De Clérambault's Syndrome or Erotomania was originally described as a delusional disorder in which a woman believes that an older man of higher social status is passionately in love with her. The patient's relentless pursuit of the delusional love object, often with escalating intrusiveness, may eventually involve threats or overt acts of retaliation, in response to repeated rejection, unrequited love, or alleged betrayal. Cases from the literature are reviewed in which the delusional romantic attachment involves the patient's psychiatrist or another medical specialist. The authors present a c

Interpretation of congruent and incongruent affective communications in paranoid schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVES: It was hypothesized that people with paranoid schizophrenia would differ from depressed and normal participants in their interpretation of complex communications in which the affect conveyed verbally was either congruent or incongruent with the affect conveyed non-verbally. DESIGN: A 3 (group) x 3 (positive, negative, neutral facial expression) x 3 (positive, negative, neutral verbal content) experimental design was used. There were eight participants per group, and the paranoid and depressed groups comprised inpatients in an acute psychiatric facility for either their first or se

[Psychopathological mechanisms of socially dangerous acts and the problem of responsibility].

The authors discuss the problems of forensic-psychiatric expert examination related to the responsibility of persons suffering from different mental disorders. In addition to the assessment of the clinical picture of a mental disease, it is necessary to take into consideration (as fully as possible) the genesis and character of the committed socially dangerous action (SDA). For this purpose it is recommended that the concept of the psychopathological mechanisms of SDA worded by the authors and their classification be made use of. The establishment in a mental patient of one of the distinguishe

[Psychodynamic aspects of paraphrenia].

Proceeding from Kraeplin's original a brief summary is given of the literature about the extensive interpretations of the term paraphrenia. Our study is based on a catamnestic examination of schizophrenic diseases first acute in 1930-1940 after 30 respectively 40 years (H. Hinterhuber) and a second group of paraphrenics who at the time being have been under our control for five years. By a simplifying scheme our own conception of paraphrenia is then defined and differentiated from the paranoid schizophrenia and the development of paranoia with special reference to the characteristic juxapositi

Environmental correlates to behavioral health outcomes in Alzheimer's special care units.

PURPOSE: We systematically measured the associations between environmental design features of nursing home special care units and the incidence of aggression, agitation, social withdrawal, depression, and psychotic problems among persons living there who have Alzheimer's disease or a related disorder. DESIGN AND METHODS: We developed and tested a model of critical health-related environmental design features in settings for people with Alzheimer's disease. We used hierarchical linear modeling statistical techniques to assess associations between seven environmental design features and behavio

Association between psychological symptoms and illegal driving behaviors in a sample of Chinese private car drivers.

BACKGROUND: Findings on the associations between psychological symptoms and driving behaviors in private car drivers are inadequate. METHOD: The study consisted of 3,115 private car drivers in Yulin, China. The measurements included socio-demographic data, traffic violations, accidents, and Symptom Checklist-90 (SCL-90). In addition, an ordered logistic regression model was employed to examine the association between each psychological symptom and risky driving behaviors. RESULTS: The overall prevalence rate of any self-reported psychological symptom was 10.24%, with 9.22% for males and 11.4

Psychotic Symptoms After SARS-CoV-2 Infection.

This case series reports three middle-aged male patients with no prior history of psychiatric disorders who developed psychotic symptoms with manic characteristics after COVID-19 infection. They presented mystic and paranoid delusions associated with euphoria, logorrheic, insomnia, and bizarre behaviors. Two of them required psychiatric hospitalization and one received corticosteroids. Treatment with antipsychotic medication improved their symptoms in a few weeks. This case series reports the new-onset psychosis probably due to COVID-19 infection. [Coincidence of schizophrenia and panic disorder].

The coincidence between panic disorder and depression is a well known phenomenon. However, only few studies investigated the coincidence of panic disorder with schizophrenia. This may in part be explained by the fact that both positive and negative symptoms of schizophrenia may mask the clinical symptoms of a panic disorder. We report on a female patient suffering both from agoraphobia with panic disorder and paranoid schizophrenia according to ICD-10. The productive psychotic symptoms responded well to treatment with a low dose of zotepine, whereas the panic disorder was effectively treated w
