Personality profiles in young adults with orthorexic eating behaviors.

PURPOSE: Orthorexia nervosa (ON), defined as an excessive preoccupation with healthy eating, has gained more interest in the literature over these past few years. However, little is known about its risk and protective factors, in particular with regards to personality. METHODS: A total of 3235 college students (10.32% men, 89.67% women) with a mean age of 21.13 (SD = 2.23) answered self-administered questionnaires assessing ON, psychopathological symptoms, and personality disorders including schizotypal, borderline, paranoid, obsessive-compulsive, and narcissistic personality. A subsample of

Dimensions of personality disorder. The DSM-III-R cluster A diagnoses.

The authors adopt a construct validity approach to examine the structural validity of diagnoses of paranoid, schizoid, and schizotypal personality disorders. Systematic descriptions of these diagnoses were developed based on features identified from the literature that were organized using the clinicians' ratings. Each diagnosis was described in terms of a series of behavioral dimensions. Sets of behavioral exemplars were developed to assess each dimension. Dimensions and diagnoses were found to exhibit satisfactory levels of internal consistency that were cross-validated in a general populati

Reliability of the Portuguese version of the structured clinical interview for DSM-III-R (SCID) in a Brazilian sample of psychiatric outpatients.

The objective of the present study was to determine the reliability of psychiatric diagnoses using a translation and adaptation of Portuguese of the "Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R-patient version" (SCID-P) and the "Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R Personality Disorders" (SCID-II), using the joint interviews methodology. Thirty-nine subjects were evaluated using the SCID-P and 20 of them using the SCID-II. Interrater reliability was analyzed statistically by means of the Kappa Coefficient. Agreement between results obtained with SCID-P was statistically significant for

[Personality disorders and psychiatric comorbidity in obsessive-compulsive disorder and anorexia nervosa].

The aim of this prospective longitudinal study was to examine the course of adolescent anorexia nervosa and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) (fulfilling DSM-III-R criteria) to compare psychiatric comorbidity and personality disorders of both groups. Because anorexia nervosa patients are mainly female, we compared them only with female OCD patients. Ten years after discharge the whole sample (32 female patients; 100%) of a group of 39 (32 female; 7 male) anorexia nervosa patients could be reexamined personally. 25 (61%) female patients of a group of 116 patients (41 female; 75 male) with obs

Delusional (paranoid) disorders.

The group of paranoid or delusional disorders, although not nearly as common as the mood and schizophrenic disorders, may be much more frequent than has usually been thought. DSM-IIIR has made a decisive step in recognizably defining at least one group of them. Interestingly, this change partly came about because the advent of an effective treatment helped to define that group more clearly. Nevertheless, DSM-IIIR's classification is too restrictive, and it was wrong to exclude the diagnosis of paraphrenia. Cases fitting this description will have to be consigned to the category of Psychotic Di

Gender and comorbidity among individuals with opioid use disorders in the NESARC study.

This study examines gender differences in the association of lifetime mental and substance use disorders among individuals with opioid use disorders in the United States. The sample (N=578) is from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC), which is a representative household survey. Bivariate analyses and logistic regression modeling were conducted. About 70% of the sample had a lifetime non-substance use Axis I disorder; women were about twice as likely as men to have either a mood or anxiety disorder. About half of the sample had a personality disorder, wi

Overweight and obesity are associated with psychiatric disorders: results from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions.

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated associations between body mass index (BMI) and psychiatric disorders. METHODS: Data from 41,654 respondents in the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions were analyzed. RESULTS: After controlling for demographics, the continuous variable of BMI was significantly associated with most mood, anxiety, and personality disorders. When persons were classified into BMI categories of underweight, normal weight, overweight, obese, and extremely obese, both obese categories had significantly increased odds of any mood, anxiety, and alcohol use di

A simplex model of the paranoid process: implications for diagnosis and prognosis.

The theory that the paranoid process is gradual and insidious was tested quantitatively by means of LISREL, a computer program designed to trace causal pathways between latent variables. The results clearly confirmed Lorr's simplex model which depicts a progressive sequence of six stages, beginning with hostile attitude and ending with delusions of influence. The model suggests that it is artificial to distinguish paranoid personality, paranoia and paranoid schizophrenia as separate diagnostic entities. Instead, paranoid schizophrenia should be regarded as a more severe form of paranoia which

Paranoia, experiential avoidance, and narcissism as predictors of outcome in residential treatment of borderline personality disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Previous research has suggested that residential treatment may be effective in reducing symptoms in patients with symptoms of borderline personality disorder (BPD). This study examined whether paranoia, experiential avoidance, and narcissistic personality features predicted response to residential treatment in a cohort of female patients with symptoms of borderline personality disorder. METHOD: Participants were 87 women with borderline personality disorder symptoms who participated in multimodal residential treatment incorporating elements of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Men

[Minimal emotional dysfunction and first impression formation in personality disorders].

"Minimal cerebral dysfunctions" are isolated impairments of basic mental functions, which are elements of complex functions like speech. The best described are cognitive dysfunctions such as reading and writing problems, dyscalculia, attention deficits, but also motor dysfunctions such as problems with articulation, hyperactivity or impulsivity. Personality disorders can be characterized by isolated emotional dysfunctions in relation to emotional adequacy, intensity and responsivity. For example, paranoid personality disorders can be characterized by continuous and inadequate distrust, as a di

[Paranoid states in the dynamics of psychopathies].

A total of 46 psychopathic personalities from 30 to 55 years of age were studied. Of them 40 subjects were examined by follow-up checkings. Under psychotraumatizing situations these patients demonstrated acute paranoiac syndromes the content of which was characterized by monotopical delusional ideas. The formation of such acute paranoiac reactions was determined by abnormal personality structures and by individual pathogenic psychotraumatizing situations. The paper contains a description of the psycho-pathological traits of acute paranoiac states in psychopaths and their impact on the general

Axis II disorders and cigarette smoking among adults from the general population.

The present study examined whether personality disorders (PDs) are associated with cigarette smoking, and the possible influence of nicotine dependence, sociodemographic variables, and the presence of any lifetime Axis I mental disorder in these relationships. The sample was made up of 1,081 adult participants from the Spanish general population and was stratified by smoking status (519 smokers and 562 nonsmokers). PDs were assessed by means of the International Personality Disorder Examination Questionnaire, Module DSM-IV. Results indicated that participants with a paranoid, a narcissistic, a

An autistic dimension: a proposed subtype of obsessive-compulsive disorder.

This article focuses on the possibility that autism spectrum disorder (ASD: Asperger syndrome, autism and atypical autism) in its milder forms may be clinically important among a substantial proportion of patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and discusses OCD subtypes based on this proposition. The hypothesis derives from extensive clinical experience of OCD and ASD, and literature searches on MEDLINE. Neuropsychological deficits are more common in OCD than in panic disorder and depression. Moreover, obsessive-compulsive and schizotypal personality disorders are over-represented

Characteristics of pathological gamblers identified among patients on a psychiatric admissions service.

A total of 105 patients admitted to a psychiatric admissions service for adults were screened for pathological gambling using the South Oaks Gambling Screen, a valid, reliable instrument for identification of this disorder. Seven of the 105 patients were identified as pathological gamblers, and ten were children of problem gamblers, rates that are higher than those for the general population. Pathological gamblers identified in this study had a broad range of primary diagnoses, including schizoaffective disorder, paranoid schizophrenia, major depression, and organic personality disorder. Paranoid personality masking an atypical case of frontotemporal dementia.

Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is a debilitating disease that is well described in the "Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders, fifth edition (DSM-5)", and typically presents with memory impairment, progressive decline in cortical functioning, and behavioral changes. Age of onset is generally in the late fifties, and usually the first presentation involves a change in behavior and emotional blunting. Treatment of FTD involves management of any neurobehavioral symptoms while trials of atypical antipsychotics are ongoing but suggest some efficacy. We present a case of a patient who
