Innervation of the smooth muscle of the lower urinary tract.

The lower urinary tract in mammals consists of the bladder, a storage organ for urine, and the urethra through which urine is expelled to the outside. In the male the urethra extends outside the body as the penis. The lower urinary tract is innervated by pelvic (parasympathetic) nerves and hypogastric nerves which combine on each side at the pelvic plexus. Fibres pass to the bladder, urethra, genital organs, rectum and blood vessels. In addition to the pelvic and hypogastric nerves there is sacral outflow to skeletal muscle, such as the external sphincters of the urethra and anus, in the puden

Cardiac autonomic control mechanisms in Chagas' heart disease. Therapeutic implications.

According to the neurogenic theory of Chagas' heart disease, the cardiac parasympathetic abnormalities of chagasic cardiac patients are due to a selective destruction of the cardiac parasympathetic neurons. Trypanosoma cruzi would selectively destroy the cardiac vagal neurons, during the acute stage of the disease. However, these cardiac parasympathetic abnormalities are found mainly in chagasic patients who are in very advanced stages of the disease. Furthermore, the extent of cardiac parasympathetic involvement correlates with the degree of left ventricular dilation. Cardiac parasympathetic

Morphological changes in the rabbit submandibular gland after parasympathetic or sympathetic denervation.

Selective denervation was used to obtain further information about the relative roles of the nerves supplying the gland. Parasympathetic denervation soon caused atrophy in both acinar and granular tubule cells, and a substantial reduction in gland wet weight. The secretory cells had several unusual features, and striated duct cells tended to accumulate glycogen. Three to four weeks after pre-ganglionic parasympathectomy, the parenchymal cells were less abnormal but still smaller than in the control, unoperated gland. Thus, parasympathetic impulses are required to maintain normal parenchymal ce

[Age-related dynamics of heart rate variability indicators in the population of Northerners young men, mature age and elderly men.].

Heart rate variability is a measure of autonomic nervous system that regulates cardiac function. It is also a potential tool for quantifying its physiological changes under the age aspect. The research examined age characteristics and differences in autonomic control of cardiovascular system based on heart rate variability indicators in individuals of different ages (young men, mature age men, and the elderly men). We studied the influence of age on indicators of autonomic heart function in temporal and frequency sections of heart rate variability. For the purpose, one hundred ninety-two young

Altered Salivary Alpha-Amylase Secretion in Patients with Ulcerative Colitis.

PURPOSE: Patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) frequently present with psychological disturbances as well as dysfunctions of autonomic nervous system (ANS). Salivary alpha-amylase (sAA) secretion is predominantly controlled by sympathetic nervous activity, while salivary fluid secretion is by parasympathetic nervous activity. Thus, it is speculated that alterations of salivary secretion may be addressed in UC populations. METHODS: Thirty-five UC patients as well as 32 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were enrolled. Saliva samples before and after citric acid stimulation were collected fr

Nonselective blocking of the sympathetic nervous system decreases detrusor overactivity in spontaneously hypertensive rats.

The involuntary dual control systems of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) in the bladder of awake spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs) were investigated through simultaneous registrations of intravesical and intraabdominal pressures to observe detrusor overactivity (DO) objectively as a core symptom of an overactive bladder. SHRs (n = 6) showed the features of overactive bladder syndrome during urodynamic study, especially DO during the filling phase. After injection of the nonselective sympathetic blocking agent labetalol, DO disappeared in 3 of 6 SHRs (50%). DO frequency decreased from 0.

[Role and mechanism of autonomic nervous system regulation in primary glaucoma].

The regulation of blood flow in the human eye, aqueous humor production, and the outflow channels of aqueous humor are all controlled by the autonomic nervous system (ANS), encompassing both sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves. Patients with primary glaucoma often exhibit autonomic nervous system dysfunctions, which may exacerbate visual impairment. The homeostasis of the autonomic nervous system is influenced by circadian rhythms, physical exercise, emotional states, medications, and other factors. Previous studies have indicated that activities such as aerobic exercise, yoga breathing, an

Overactive bladder as a dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system - A narrative review.

Overactive bladder (OAB) is a common condition with increasing prevalence. However, its aetiology is not fully understood. The main symptoms are sudden urge to urinate, with or without incontinence; increased daytime frequency; and nocturia. OAB-like symptoms can be caused by a number of diseases, including urinary tract infections, neurologic and metabolic diseases, and neoplasms. The final diagnosis is made after excluding all the abovementioned factors. Autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction has also been identified as a possible cause of so-called 'idiopathic OAB'. In order to check th

Bidirectional interaction between immune and neuroendocrine systems. An experimental approach.

The purpose of this article is to review recent experimental data from our laboratory on immune-neuroendocrine communications, whereby the following findings will be discussed: (i) Experiments using an experimental stress model in rats revealed different doses of a defined stressor to exert opposite effects on the in vitro reactivity of peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL). Stress effects are also dependent on the tissue origin of lymphocytes, and they seem to be exclusively mediated by adrenal hormones. (ii) The balance between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system may be critical

[An aged case of orthostatic hypotension possibly due to parasympathetic neurodysfunction].

94-year-old male patient, with orthostatic hypotension, possibly due to impairment of vasoconstriction and parasympathetic nervous system dysfunction was reported. This patient experienced faintness and lower muscle weakness on standing. The blood pressure was 180/90 mmHg in a supine position, while it significantly decreased to 100/58 mmHg in an upright position. There was no evidence indicating the presence of organic brain diseases, cardiovascular diseases, and endocrine diseases, plasma catecholamine, renin, aldosterone, and vasopressin levels at rest were within normal range. Thus, the ca

Psychosomatics and psychopathology: looking up and down from the brain.

The autonomic nervous system (ANS) plays a role in a wide range of somatic and mental diseases. Using a model of neurovisceral integration, this article describes how autonomic imbalance and decreased parasympathetic tone in particular may be the final common pathway linking negative affective states and conditions to ill health. The central nervous system (CNS) network that regulates autonomic balance (central autonomic network, CAN) is closely related and partially overlaps with networks serving executive, social, affective, attentional, and motivated behavior (anterior executive region, AER

[Cardiovascular disorders in paraplegic patients].

While the consequences of damage to the sensorimotor nervous system in spinal cord injury are obvious, autonomic dysreflexia often goes unrecognised. Spinal cord injury affecting the cord above the fifth thoracic segment involves interruption of the connection between brain and sympathetic nervous system and, below the level of the lesion, the sacral parasympathetic nervous system. The isolated spinal cord continues to function, except for the directly damaged segment, but there is no central control. The autonomic nervous system below the level of the lesion can trigger severe reactions from

Effects of autonomic nerve stimulation on the secretory products of the dog submandibular gland.

Dog submandibular gland cells store mucins and secretory protein in their secretory granules for the purpose of export. The secretion of these products is under the influence of autonomic innervation to the gland. Acinar cell products are influenced by the parasympathetic division whereas the duct cell secretory proteins are influenced by the sympathetic division of the autonomic nervous system. Demilune cell secretory products are influenced by both divisions of the autonomic nervous system.

Combined effect of prefrontal transcranial direct current stimulation and a working memory task on heart rate variability.

Prefrontal cortex activity has been associated with changes to heart rate variability (HRV) via mediation of the cortico-subcortical pathways that regulate the parasympathetic and sympathetic branches of the autonomic nervous system. Changes in HRV due to altered prefrontal cortex functioning can be predicted using the neurovisceral integration model, which suggests that prefrontal hyperactivity increases parasympathetic tone and decreases contributions from the sympathetic nervous system. Working memory (WM) tasks and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) have been used independently

Benefits of pharmacological and electrical cholinergic stimulation in hypertension and heart failure.

Systemic arterial hypertension and heart failure are cardiovascular diseases that affect millions of individuals worldwide. They are characterized by a change in the autonomic nervous system balance, highlighted by an increase in sympathetic activity associated with a decrease in parasympathetic activity. Most therapeutic approaches seek to treat these diseases by medications that attenuate sympathetic activity. However, there is a growing number of studies demonstrating that the improvement of parasympathetic function, by means of pharmacological or electrical stimulation, can be an effective

Chronic heart failure and heart transplantation: The relationship between autonomic function and cardiac performance.

Chronic heart failure (CHF) is a complex clinical syndrome characterized by impaired cardiac function and neurohormonal dysregulation. While CHF has traditionally been regarded as a hemodynamic disorder, growing evidence highlights the pivotal role of autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction in its progression and prognosis. The ANS, comprising sympathetic and parasympathetic branches, exerts significant control over cardiac function, including heart rate, contractility, and vascular tone. In CHF, sympathetic overactivation coupled with parasympathetic withdrawal contributes to adverse cardi

Autonomic nervous system function during sleep among women with irritable bowel syndrome.

This study compared heart-rate variability (HRV) indices of autonomic nervous system function during two nights of sleep between women with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS, n = 35) and healthy controls (n = 38), and among subgroups within the IBS sample based on predominant stool patterns. HRV measures were estimated in conjunction with polysomnographic sleep scoring to define sleep stage-specific autonomic indices. Overall, there were no differences in indicators of HRV between women with IBS and controls. However, within the IBS group, women with diarrhea-predominant IBS demonstrated significa
