Fathers' experience of parenting a child with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.

The author examined the experience of fathers who have a child with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA). He used grounded theory methodology, in which 22 fathers participated in semistructured interviews, and developed a substantive theory of fathers' experience that addresses the impact of their child's JRA, their adaptational responses, and the meanings they associated with their experiences. Fathers were profoundly affected, perceived their child's condition as a catalyst for meaningful involvement, experienced many emotions, and sought to adopt a positive approach to making sense of their

Harsh parenting in relation to child emotion regulation and aggression.

This study presents a model of harsh parenting that has an indirect effect, as well as a direct effect, on child aggression in the school environment through the mediating process of child emotion regulation. Tested on a sample of 325 Chinese children and their parents, the model showed adequate goodness of fit. Also investigated were interaction effects between parents' and children's gender. Mothers' harsh parenting affected child emotion regulation more strongly than fathers', whereas harsh parenting emanating from fathers had a stronger effect on child aggression. Fathers' harsh parenting

African American grandmothers parenting AIDS orphans: concomitant grief and loss.

Ten urban African American grandmothers participated in a qualitative study using in-depth open-ended interviews to determine if and how the African American cultural experience informed the grieving process and the acceptance of the "off-time" parenting role. The findings do not support the premise that grief resolution requires the bereaved to relinquish all ties to the deceased. The participants maintained strong bonds with the deceased through the conscious decision to remember their unique qualities and through parenting their children, a tradition rooted in the history of the African Ame

Parenting and child distress during cancer procedures: a multidimensional assessment.

We examined the relationship between children's distress during invasive cancer procedures and parent anxiety, parent disciplinary attitudes, and parent behavior during the medical procedure. Sixty-six children with cancer and their parents were evaluated during a routine bone marrow aspiration. Significantly higher levels of distress were obtained for young (under age 8) versus older children. Patterns of relationships with parent variables also varied by age. Anxious parents of young children reported relying on less effective discipline strategies. They also were less reassuring prior to to

Facilitators' champion behaviors for delivering an evidence-based parenting program.

Effective implementation of parenting programs relies on multiple factors, particularly the role of facilitators who actively deliver and support the intervention. Facilitators' champion behaviors or the efforts they make to encourage implementation, can positively impact the outcomes of these programs. The present study examined the predictors of facilitators' champion behaviors when delivering the ACT-Raising Safe Kids Program in public services in an upper-middle-income country. The sample comprised 131 facilitators from 26 municipalities in Brazil. Participants completed self-report questi

Social and emotional skills for nurturing parenting: A qualitative examination.

Social and emotional skills develop within cultural contexts and shape parenting behaviors, yet little work has examined the specific skills parents themselves consider important for parenting, or the factors they perceive as supporting these skills, in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Centering parents' own conceptualizations, this two-phase descriptive qualitative study with 54 parents living in Colombia combined an initial phase of focus groups and individual interviews with a second phase of targeted individual interviews, and used thematic analysis to explore the social and emoti

Breast Cancer Patients' Parenting Concerns User Personas: A Qualitative Analysis.

Breast cancer disproportionately affects young women raising minor children. Unresolved parenting concerns can impair patients mental health, reduce treatment adherence, and compromise long-term oncological outcomes. However, previous studies have paid limited attention to the heterogeneity of parenting concerns in this population and lack a theory-grounded classification framework for stratified supportive care. This descriptive qualitative study, framed by social role theory, recruited 17 Chinese breast cancer patients through maximum variation sampling and conducted semi-structured in-depth

Childhood maltreatment and parenting: Indirect associations via posttraumatic stress symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: Maltreatment survivors may be at risk for parenting challenges, though the previous literature is inconsistent and much of the prior work has not examined cumulative maltreatment and posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) in tandem. Further, there are a variety of parenting domains that remain unstudied in this area, including sense of competency, social desirability, parent-child communication, limit setting, and gender role orientation. The aims of the present study were to investigate (a) cumulative maltreatment and PTSS in relation to several parenting factors (e.g., perceived par

BACKGROUND: Substance use in adolescents has been separately related to personality traits and parental socialization styles; in this study, our objective was to study these variables in an integrated way. METHODS: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted in five institutes in a final sample of 331 students, excluding those with gaming disorder. The sample was stratified into three subgroups: 'no addiction', 'low risk', and 'high risk' of Substance Use Disorders (SUD). RESULTS: 12.9% of the adolescents presented a low risk of SUD, while 18.3% showed a high risk, with both being ol

Prolonged grief in refugees, parenting behaviour and children's mental health.

BACKGROUND: Many refugees experience bereavement, and as a result they suffer elevated rates of prolonged grief disorder. Evidence also indicates that elevated rates of psychological disturbance in refugee children can be associated with parental mental health. This study examined the extent to which prolonged grief disorder in refugees is associated with their parenting behaviour and in turn with their children's mental health. METHODS: This study recruited participants from the Building a New Life in Australia prospective cohort study of refugees admitted to Australia between October 2013 a

Parenting a child with Marfan syndrome: Distress and everyday problems.

Marfan syndrome (MFS) is a multisystemic, autosomal dominant connective tissue disorder that occurs de novo in 25%. In many families, parent and child(ren) are affected, which may increase distress in parents. To assess distress, 42 mothers (29% MFS) and 25 fathers (60% MFS) of 43 affected children, completed the validated screening-questionnaire Distress thermometer for parents of a chronically ill child, including questions on overall distress (score 0-10; ≥4 denoting "clinical distress") and everyday problems (score 0-36). Data were compared to 1,134 control-group-parents of healthy childre
