Late-onset idiopathic hypoparathyroidism with thymoma: a case report.

A 62-year-old male was admitted because of numbness and twitching of both hands. Hypocalcemia with positive Trousseau's sign was noted. Chest X-ray and computed tomography (CT) showed an anterior mediastinal mass. Skull X-ray and whole body bone scan could not rule out bony metastasis to the left parietal bone, causing an anterior mediastinal tumor with bony metastasis to be suspected initially. Median sternotomy and extended thymectomy were done, and Stage II thymoma with negative calcitonin staining was noted. However, hypocalcemia persisted after thymectomy and the results of pre-operative

Fracture mechanics properties of human cranial bone.

The mechanical properties of the human skull have been examined and established previously in the literature, for example, the transversal isotropy of cranial bone and properties including the Elastic modulus and Poisson's ratio. However, despite the existing data, there are still mechanical properties which remain to be determined for the human skull. The present study aims to characterise the fracture properties of human cranial bone within the Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics (LEFM) framework. Unembalmed human (2 female and 3 male) cortical cranial bone samples were harvested from the fron

Regional differences of dura osteoinduction: squamous dura induces osteogenesis, sutural dura induces chondrogenesis and osteogenesis.

Dura plays an important role in calvarial morphogenesis. However, precisely what that role is remains unclear. We present here in vivo evidence that dura without other central nervous system components induces both chondrogenesis and osteogenesis. The mechanism is, at least in part, by proximate tissue interaction. The objectives of this experiment were to answer the following: (1) Can dura actually induce osteogenesis without the influence of the underlying brain? (2) What are the requirements of this dura-induced heterotopic osteogenesis? (3) What are the differences between dura underlying

Effects of a metabolic syndrome induced by a fructose-rich diet on bone metabolism in rats.

OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study were: first, to evaluate the possible effects of a fructose rich diet (FRD)-induced metabolic syndrome (MS) on different aspects of long bone histomorphometry in young male rats; second, to investigate the effects of this diet on bone tissue regeneration; and third, to correlate these morphometric alterations with changes in the osteogenic/adipogenic potential and expression of specific transcription factors, of marrow stromal cells (MSC) isolated from rats with fructose-induced MS. MATERIALS/METHODS: MS was induced in rats by treatment with a FRD for 28 days

A tale of two cities: The genetic mechanisms governing calvarial bone development.

The skull bones must grow in a coordinated, three-dimensional manner to coalesce and form the head and face. Mammalian skull bones have a dual embryonic origin from cranial neural crest cells (CNCC) and paraxial mesoderm (PM) and ossify through intramembranous ossification. The calvarial bones, the bones of the cranium which cover the brain, are derived from the supraorbital arch (SOA) region mesenchyme. The SOA is the site of frontal and parietal bone morphogenesis and primary center of ossification. The objective of this review is to frame our current in vivo understanding of the morphogenes

Association between maxillofacial fractures and brain injuries in trauma patients: a cross-sectional study in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

INTRODUCTION: trauma is on the rise in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) due to rapid urbanization and motorization, posing increased risks of traumatic maxillofacial and brain injuries. Given the high morbidity and mortality associated with these injuries, this study aimed to measure the prevalence and associated factors of brain injury among head injury trauma patients. METHODS: a cross-sectional study was conducted at the King Khalid hospital and Prince Sultan Centre for Healthcare in Al-Kharj City and the Al Kharj Military Industries Corporation Hospital in Al-Kharj City in the KSA. [Interparietal bone in forensic practice: case report].

INTRODUCTION: In forensic autopsy, pathologists pay attention to skull fracture lines. They are not much interested in the anatomical morphological variations of the skull bones, as long as the variations are not present. The interparietal bone is one of the anatomical variations that could be of interest for forensic pathologists. CASE OUTLINE: We present a case of a 54-year-old man who, after a fall overlived a head injury for six weeks. By chance, autopsy revealed an undivided interparietal bone. Its lateral sutures were fused with parietal bones and unrecognizable from the anterior skull

Clinical features of syndromic craniosynostosis.

Disruption of normal suture development and function can result in premature suture fusion, craniosynostosis. This review focuses on syndromic forms of craniosynostosis. More than 100 syndromes in which craniosynostosis is a feature have been documented and here the most common conditions including Apert and Crouzon syndromes are described as well as other conditions with a particularly interesting molecular etiology, such as Saethre- Chotzen and craniofrontonasal syndrome.

Use of autogenous cranial bone grafts in maxillofacial surgery: a preliminary report.

In conventional reconstruction of the facial skeleton, bone grafts are usually harvested from distant sites such as the ilium or ribs. Because of the morbidity associated with the use of these sites, the calvarium was studied as an alternate donor site. Twenty-three patients underwent bone grafting using autogenous calvarial bone. Reconstructive procedures included alveolar cleft grafts, Le Fort I osteotomies, midface onlay grafts, and grafting of a mandibular continuity defect. Intraoperative and postoperative morbidity associated with the bone donor site was minimal, and there was good incor

Diagnostic ultrasound for detection of intrauterine growth retardation.

There were 738 fetal BPD determined in 468 normal obstetric patients between 16 and 43 weeks in whom (1) the size of the uterus on initial examination corresponded to the duration of amenorrhea +/- 1 week and (2) there were no complications during the pregnancy. The mean BPD +/- 2 S.D. was determined for each week. The rate of BPD growth was found to be 0.26 cm. per week from 18 to 38 weeks. One hundred random high-risk obstetric patients in whom the size of the uterus on initial examination corresponded to the weeks of amenorrhea +/- 1 week were studied. Two patterns of suspected IUGR are obs

[Was Beethoven's deafness caused by Paget's disease? Report of findings and study of skull fragments of Ludwig van Beethoven].

Paget's disease of bone (osteitis deformans) has been repeatedly named as a possible cause for Ludwig van Beethoven's deafness. In 1985 a descendent of Franz Romeo Seligmann (a Viennese medical historian who in 1863 had studied Beethoven's mortal remains on the occasion of their relocation) presented to us three bone fragments allegedly from Beethoven's cranium. They represented fragments of the left parietal bone and the occiputum. It was possible to prove nearly with certainty that these bone fragments actually are Beethoven's. They did not show signs of Paget's disease of bone. It must ther

Computer-guided calvarial mono-cortical bone blocks harvest: A novel approach for three-dimensional alveolar reconstruction of atrophic maxilla.

BACKGROUND: Calvarial bone grafts have been one of the grafting options that provides predictable results for three-dimensional reconstruction of severely atrophied ridges owing to their low resorption and rapid revascularization, thus providing adequate volume for implant insertion. The aim of this study was to introduce a computer-guided technique for calvarial graft harvest to minimize the complications known with grafting from this donor site. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eight patients, suffering from severely atrophied, completely edentulous maxillary ridges, with an age range (21-30 years) w

Giant calvarial solitary fibrous tumor with intracranial and extracranial extension in an elderly patient: imaging and surgical considerations.

Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are rare hypervascular mesenchymal tumors that may occasionally involve the calvarium with both intracranial and extracranial extension. We report the case of an 87-year-old hypertensive woman who presented with progressive right-sided weakness and worsening headache associated with a large left parietal scalp mass. Contrast-enhanced CT and MRI demonstrated a giant left parietal calvarial lesion with heterogeneous enhancement and extensive intra- and extracranial components causing mass effect with midline shift. Preoperative imaging suggested a hypervascular sku

Skull Fracture Patterns and Morphologies Among Fatal Motorcycle Traffic Accident Victims in Vietnam.

We aim to describe morphological structures of skull fractures and relevant factors in motorcycle accident victims in Vietnam. This work represents a retrospective cross-sectional study based on forensic reports of fatal motorcycle accident victims. Between January 2013 and August 2019, a total of 226 fatal motorcycle accident patients with skull fracture diagnoses were enrolled. Linear and depressed fractures were the common patterns (46.0% and 37.2% of cases, respectively), whereas stellate (11.5%) fractures were rare. Fractures of the temporal bone (68.6% of cases) and basilar skull (60.6%)

[Hydatidosis of the cranial vault. Two case reports].

The authors report 2 cases of echinococcosis of the cranial vault, an extremely rare localization of hydatid disease. The parietal bone was involved in one case and the occipital bone in the other. The authors discuss the mechanism and classification of cranial vault echinococcosis. The clinical signs of the disease as well as its radiological appearances and especially its very characteristic CT scan appearances are studied in relation to the literature.

Biparietal Osteodystrophy Visualized on a Dermatologist's Scalp Examination.

Biparietal osteodystrophy, also known as biparietal thinning, is an uncommon illness that causes symmetrical thinning of the parietal bones. It primarily affects women in their sixth and seventh decades of life. We present a case of a 73-year-old female with osteoporosis and osteoarthritis who visited a dermatology clinic with a bulging mass around her vertex scalp, accompanied by episodes of dizziness and blurred vision. The patient had a history of head trauma, but the skull abnormality was observed prior to these episodes. Laboratory testing was unremarkable except for high vitamin D levels
