Combination of available topical beta-blockers and antibiotic ointment for epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor-induced paronychia and pseudopyogenic granulomas in Taiwan.

BACKGROUND: Painful paronychia and pseudopyogenic granuloma (PG) are common adverse drug reactions (ADRs) associated with the use of epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitors (EGFR-TKIs) to treat non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Multiple local management approaches have been tested with unsatisfactory results. We have introduced an occlusion therapy technique through which available topical drugs for longer than 2 years. METHODS: Based on the cancer registry and case management system of our hospital, from July 2019 to July 2020, we retrospectively enrolled patients with

Efficacy of Topical Beta-Blockers in Managing Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor Inhibitor-Related Paronychia and Pyogenic Granuloma-Like Lesion: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) inhibitors, including tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), are associated with paronychia and pyogenic granuloma-like lesions (PGLs) that significantly impair patients' quality of life. Topical beta-blockers emerge as a non-invasive and promising therapy for such adverse events. This meta-analysis evaluated the efficacy of topical beta-blockers for EGFR inhibitor-induced paronychia and PGLs. METHOD: In accordance with the PRISMA 2020 guidelines, multiple databases were searched for relevant studies. The primary outcomes were overall response

Antibacterial Activity of Hydroethanolic Extracts of Artemisia annua L., Hibiscus sabdariffa L., and Paronychia argentea Lam. Against Some Clinically Relevant Gram-Positive and Gram-Negative Bacteria.

Background: Antimicrobial resistance is one of the major challenges in healthcare, leading to more severe infections, higher mortality, and increased healthcare costs. Therefore, exploring new alternatives, such as plant extracts with antimicrobial properties helps to reduce bacterial resistance. Artemisia annua L., Hibiscus sabdariffa L., and Paronychia argentea Lam. are traditionally used for their biological properties, including antimicrobial activity. However, scientific evidence regarding their antibacterial effects against clinically important bacteria remains limited. Methods: Extracts

Skin Toxicities Induced by Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors and their Influence on Treatment Adjustments in Lung Cancer Patients.

Skin toxicities caused by epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitors can affect patient quality of life and lead to treatment adjustments, including dose reduction or discontinuation. This retrospective study aimed to profile skin toxicities and their impact on treatment adjustments. A total of 288 non-small cell lung cancer patients treated with first-, second-, or third-generation epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitors were included. Skin toxicities, including papulopustular rash, xerosis, paronychia, and pruritus, were assessed based on medical records,

Is lymphangitic streaking associated with different pathogens?

OBJECTIVES: Little is known regarding the differences in microbiology associated with cellulitis or abscess with or without lymphangitic streaking. The objective of our study is to assess whether there are differences in the pathogens identified from wound cultures of patients with paronychia with and without associated lymphangitis. METHODS: Retrospective cross-sectional study at a tertiary pediatric emergency department over 25 years. We opted to assess patients with paronychia of the finger, assuming that these cases will have a greater variety of causative pathogens compared to other case

Nail manifestations in pemphigus vulgaris.

Nail involvement in pemphigus vulgaris is rare. We describe 5 patients with pemphigus vulgaris presenting nail involvement. In this disease, nail manifestations present, by order of frequency, as chronic paronychia, onychomadesis, onycholysis, Beau's lines and trachyonychia. All our 5 cases presented with paronychia, and 1 of them also had Beau's lines. Treatment with prednisone and/or cyclophosphamide controlled mucocutaneous and nail manifestations in all cases.

Periungual tegumentary leishmaniasis: a diagnostic challenge.

Periungual and paronychia-like skin lesions can mimic various diseases, setting up a diagnostic challenge that invariably requires correlation with complementary tests. We report a case of an ulcerated tumor of the nailfold diagnosed as leishmaniasis. Although paronychia-like cutaneous leishmaniasis is a rare variant, its epidemiological relevance in Brazil should prompt dermatologists to include it as a plausible diagnosis thus leading to correct work up and treatment.

Percutaneous injury during dermatologic surgery.

An anonymous survey was conducted among 100 randomly selected fellows of the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery. Forty-one respondents provided information about their experience with percutaneous injury. Causes of injury during 6278 invasive procedures performed during a 1-month period included suture needlesticks (two injuries), injection needlestick (one), needle recapping (one), scalpel blade (one), skin hook (one), and an injury during the transport of an instrument (one). Dermatologic surgeons were more likely to injure their dominant fingers. Attitudes of dermatologic surgeons we

Fingertip dermatitis refractory to topical corticosteroids associated with nail-patella syndrome.

A 14-year-old girl and her 47-year-old father presented with fingernails that were hypoplastic, spoon-shaped and ridged since birth. Fingertip dermatitis and paronychia were also observed in the daughter, which had been present since birth and had progressively worsened. The daughter denied trauma to her fingernails or chronic exposure to irritants and allergens. She had previously tried topical corticosteroids for 18 months without any benefit. We put forward the possibility of chronic paronychia and fingertip dermatitis, refractory to topical corticosteroids, as associations of digital nail-

Candida onychomycosis--an evaluation of the role of Candida species in nail disease.

Nail infections caused by Candida species are normally associated with chronic paronychia or chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis (CMCC). However, the role of Candida in the pathogenesis of other primary nail dystrophies has been questioned in view of their response to antifungal therapy alone. In the present study of 86 patients with primary nail dystrophies from which Candida was isolated, three patterns of nail involvement were found. Nineteen patients, of whom 17 had CMCC, had total dystrophic onychomycosis of at least two nails. The second group consisted of 27 patients with paronychia and l
