Retromandibular vein ectasia : A parotid mass mimicker.

Retromandibular venous ectasia is a rare lesion that may imitate a parotid gland mass. Accurate radiological diagnosis prevents unnecessary invasive procedures. We present the case of a 69-year-old male patient presenting a right-sided, painless, compressible parotid region mass, fluctuating in size with head position and Valsalva maneuver. No thrill was palpable on physical examination. Doppler ultrasound demonstrated an anechoic compressible intra-parotid lesion, with luminal color filling, and venous spectral waveform. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography and Magnetic resonance angiography

Parotid gland malignant melanomas.

BACKGROUND: Malignant melanomas are relatively unusual tumors in the parotid gland. The majority of previously reported cases appear to represent metastatic lesions, often from cutaneous head and neck primaries. METHODS: Retrospective clinicopathologic review of 12 cases of malignant melanoma involving the parotid gland encountered between 1980 and October 1999 at a tertiary referral center. RESULTS: Patients consisted of 9 men and 3 women ranging in age from 30 to 84 years (median, 66 years). Eleven of 12 patients presented with a neck mass or nodule. In 9 of 12 patients, a cutaneous or con

Cavernous hemangioma of the parotid gland.

In adults, hemangioma is a rare presentation of a parotid mass. In this report, we present a case of a 40-year-old lady complaining of a swelling in the right inferior parotid region. Imaging studies revealed a cystic lesion of the right parotid gland. Fine needle aspiration cytology was not significantly helpful in revealing the diagnosis. In the operating room, a vascular cystic lesion was found in the deep lobe of the right parotid gland. Pathological analysis confirmed the diagnosis of cavernous hemangioma. In this case report, we discuss a rare pathology in the adult population, and revie

Lipoma in Parotid Gland: A Rare Case Report.

Lipoma is a benign, rare, mesenchymal tumor found in the head and neck region, especially in the parotid gland. It thus requires a careful and precise examination to establish a diagnosis. A surgical procedure of the parotid gland is challenging due to the associated risk factor of facial nerve injury. We report a rare case of head and neck region lipoma between the superficial and deep lobe of the parotid gland. A 44-year-old female patient was presented with the chief complaint of a painless lump on the left front ear to the left cheek for about 1 year. There were no complaints of tooth pain

[Lymphoepithelial cyst arising in the parotid gland; a report of 3 cases].

Lymphoepithelial cysts occur mainly in the lateral cervical region, but rarely in the parotid gland. We report three cases of lymphoepithelial cysts arising in the parotid gland. These patients presented with a mass in the pre-auricular or infra-auricular region. All masses were mobile and non-tender. The lesions were removed by superficial partial parotidectomy. A definite diagnosis could not be made at initial evaluation, including clinical findings, ultrasound sonography, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, nor radioisotope scintigraphy. Final diagnoses were made by histopathol

[The interesting case -- case no. 68. Metastasis of a small-cell bronchial carcinoma to the parotid gland].

We present a case of a metastasis to the parotid gland from a small cell carcinoma of lung. The patient noted swelling in right parotid region without pain and saw an otorhinolaryngologist. There was no facial nerve palsy. He was admitted to our hospital. The total parotidectomy with facial nerve preserving was performed. The pathological findings indicated small cell carcinoma. After receipt of this report, we examined the lungs. An abnormal shadow could be found in the chest X-rays. CT revealed a lung tumor on a left site which was determined to be small cell carcinoma by transbronchial lung

Dissection Report of Combined Variations of the Facial Nerve, Cervical Plexus, and Superficial Venous System in the Cervicofacial Region.

The cervicofacial region contains densely layered neural and venous structures with clinically significant anatomic variability. Variations involving the extratemporal facial nerve (FN), its communications with the cervical plexus (CP), and the superficial venous system may increase surgical risk during parotid, submandibular, and upper cervical procedures. A stepwise cervicofacial dissection was performed on an 82-year-old male donated cadaver. The branching pattern of the extratemporal FN, intrafacial interconnections, communications with CP branches, and relationships to the retromandibular

Lipomatosis of the parotid gland in a child.

Lipomatosis of the parotid gland is a very rare tumour and its discovery in a child is exceptional. These tumours are not generally considered in the preoperative differential diagnosis of parotid region neoplasms because of their rarity. The treatment of choice is surgical excision, with a superficial or total parotidectomy, preserving the facial nerve. Long-term follow-up is advised due to possible microscopic infiltration. A case of lipomatosis of the parotid gland in a 4-month-old child is reported.

Differential regulation of the apical plasma membrane Ca(2+) -ATPase by protein kinase A in parotid acinar cells.

Cross-talk between intracellular calcium ([Ca(2+)](i)) signaling and cAMP defines the specificity of stimulus-response coupling in a variety of cells. Previous studies showed that protein kinase A (PKA) potentiates and phosphorylates the plasma membrane Ca(2+)-ATPase (PMCA) in a Ca(2+)-dependent manner in parotid acinar cells (Bruce, J. I. E., Yule, D. I., and Shuttleworth, T. J. (2002) J. Biol. Chem. 277, 48172-48181). The aim of this study was to further investigate the spatial regulation of [Ca(2+)](i) clearance in parotid acinar cells. Par-C10 cells were used to functionally isolate the ap

Masseter Muscle Size in Chronic Parotid Sialadenitis.

OBJECTIVE: The relationship between masseter muscle thickness and parotid duct obstruction resulting in recurrent sialadenitis is not well defined. This study aims to evaluate masseter muscle size in patients with chronic sialadenitis of the parotid and compared to patients without parotid sialadenitis. METHODS: Data was collected retrospectively from patients with symptomatic chronic sialadenitis of the parotid or submandibular glands. Measurements of the masseter and lateral pterygoid muscles were performed on CT or MRI imaging by two investigators who were blinded to the symptomatic gland

Giant cell tumour of a temporomandibular joint presenting as a parotid mass: case report and analysis of the 19 cases in the literature.

Giant cell tumour (GCT) in the parotid region is a rare lesion whose origin can be divided into three compartments: giant cell tumour of the salivary gland (GCT-SG), giant cell tumour of the bone (GCT-bone) and giant cell tumour of the soft tissue (GCT-ST). A low risk of malignancy has been observed, in which all of them were GCT-SG. We present a case of GCT in the parotid region and review the features of GCT in origin, immunohistochemical characteristics, treatment of choice and disease outcome.

A Rare Case of Parotid Gland Tuberculosis.

Parotid gland tuberculosis is a very rare form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis, with less than 200 cases reported in literature. We describe a 10-year-old female who presented with a swelling in the left parotid region during the last month. CT scan neck revealed an abscess in the left parotid gland extending into the submandibular gland, muscles, and bone. Pus aspirated by FNAC showed acid fast bacilli in the ZN stain, and GeneXpert was positive for rifampicin-sensitive Mycobacterium tuberculosis. She was successfully treated with antituberculous therapy given for 6 months. Parotid gland tuber

Correlation between quantitative salivary gland scintigraphy and salivary secretion rates in children and young adults treated for hematological, malignant and metabolic diseases.

OBJECTIVES: To study the correlation between whole salivary secretion rates and different variables from the radionuclide time-activity curve and to determine a reliable region for background correction in salivary gland scintigraphy. METHODS: Salivary gland scintigraphy (SGS) was performed before bone marrow transplantation or more than 4 years later in 23 patients aged 13.5 (s.d. 4.9) years. Unstimulated and stimulated whole salivary secretion rates were measured before SGS. Six different methods for background correction were evaluated. RESULTS: The unstimulated secretion rate was signifi

Anatomo-radiological study of the superficial musculo-aponeurotic system of the face.

The aim of the study was to analyse the appearance of the superficial muscolo-aponeurotic system (SMAS) in radiological images (Magnetic Resonance -MR- and Computed tomography -CT- scans, 10M, 10F randomly selected) in the three regions of the face (the parotid and cheek regions and the nasolabial fold). In axial CT images, the SMAS appears as a relatively hyperdense tortuous line between the hypodense superficial fibroadipose tissue (SAT) and the hypodense deep adipose tissue (DAT). In parotid region SAT is well represented (mean thickness 4.32 +/- 2.9 mm), whereas DAT is very thin (0.33 +/-

MRI evaluation of Kimura's disease with emphasis on diffusion weighted imaging and enhancement characteristics.

Kimura's disease is a rare disease of the head and neck region affecting mainly the adult males in eastern countries. The parotid and periparotid subcutaneous regions are the most common sites in head and neck region. Coupled with peripheral eosinophilia and raised serum IgE levels as characteristic features on hemogram, a painless swelling in parotid and periparotid region is diagnostic of Kimura's disease. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been an important modality in evaluating lesions of the head and neck region. Recently, interest in the diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) and contrast e

Myxoid Liposarcoma of the Parotid Gland.

Liposarcoma is extremely rare in the parotid gland. In this article, we report the case of an 87-year-old man who presented to our department with swelling in the left parotid region. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a tumor in the superficial lobe of the parotid gland. Total parotidectomy and ipsilateral lymph node dissection were performed. Histologic examination confirmed the diagnosis of myxoid liposarcoma of the parotid gland. On imaging, there was no evidence of nodal or distant metastasis. Radiation therapy was planned, but the patient refused to receive treatment. After a foll

Anti-interferon-γ autoantibody-associated disseminated Mycobacterium abscessus infection mimicking parotid cancer with multiple metastases: A case report.

RATIONALE: Among the nontuberculous mycobacteria, Mycobacterium abscessus is a common cause of skin, soft tissue, and bone infections. However, disseminated M. abscessus infection that mimics cancer metastasis with an underlying relatively immunocompetent condition has rarely been reported. PATIENT CONCERNS: A nonsmoking 73-year-old man with an underlying relatively immunocompetent condition reported a 2-month history of a mass in the region of his right parotid gland that had been steadily increasing in size. DIAGNOSES: The head and neck computed tomography showed an avidly enhancing tumor

False diagnosis caused by Warthin tumor of the parotid gland combined with actinomycosis.

A case is reported in which a unilateral parotid gland cystadenolymphoma was combined with actinomycosis. A 48-year-old woman presented with a mass in the left parotid region and paresis of the lower left palpebra. The computed tomography, echography, and parotid radiographic findings did not exclude a neoplasm of the left parotid gland. The ramus of the mandible was involved in the process. Intraoperative freezing histology, total parotidectomy, and partial mandibulectomy were performed, with sacrifice of the facial nerve followed by nerve reconstruction.
