Airborne particulate matter inhibits alveolar fluid reabsorption in mice via oxidant generation.

Ambient particulate matter is increasingly recognized as a significant contributor to human cardiopulmonary morbidity and mortality in the United States and worldwide. We sought to determine whether exposure to ambient particulate matter would alter alveolar fluid clearance in mice. Mice were exposed to a range of doses of a well-characterized particulate matter collected from the ambient air in Düsseldorf, Germany through a single intratracheal instillation, and alveolar fluid clearance and measurements of lung injury were made. Exposure to even very low doses of particulate matter (10 microg

Characterization of particulate matter in carbon-graphite/epoxy advanced composite material smoke.

The physical and chemical properties of the particulate fraction of carbon-graphite/epoxy advanced composite material (cgeACM) smoke were measured to address concerns regarding potential health hazards posed by the release of fibers during pyrolysis of this material. Filter, low-pressure cascade impactor, and electrostatic precipitator samples were collected from cgeACM smoke in which the aerosol concentration ranged from 0.20 to 5.39 g/m3. Fibers were found in the smoke among individual, spherical, or nearly spherical particles and chain aggregates. The fibers had a mean count diameter of 0.5

Characterization of fine particulate matter produced by combustion of residual fuel oil.

Combustion experiments were carried out on four different residual fuel oils in a 732-kW boiler. PM emission samples were separated aerodynamically by a cyclone into fractions that were nominally less than and greater than 2.5 microns in diameter. However, examination of several of the samples by computer-controlled scanning electron microscopy (CCSEM) revealed that part of the PM2.5 fraction consists of carbonaceous cenospheres and vesicular particles that range up to 10 microns in diameter. X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy data were obtained at the S, V, Ni, Fe, Cu, Zn, an

Metabolic Response of RAW 264.7 Macrophages to Exposure to Crude Particulate Matter and a Reduced Content of Organic Matter.

Exposure to air pollution from various airborne particulate matter (PM) is regarded as a potential health risk. Airborne PM penetrates the lungs, where it is taken up by macrophages, what results in macrophage activation and can potentially lead to negative consequences for the organism. In the present study, we assessed the effects of direct exposure of RAW 264.7 macrophages to crude PM (NIST1648a) and to a reduced content of organic matter (LAp120) for up to 72 h on selected parameters of metabolic activity. These included cell viability and apoptosis, metabolic activity and cell number, ROS

Particulate Matter-Induced Lysosomal Rupture-Mediated Pyroptosis in Human Vocal Fold Fibroblasts.

OBJECTIVE: Exposure to air pollution, specifically to particulate matter (PM), is a significant global health hazard. Recent studies have shown that PM triggers NLRP3-mediated pyroptosis. However, whether cathepsin B (CTSB), a protease released from ruptured lysosomes, activates the NLRP3 inflammasome is unclear. This study investigated the involvement of CTSB and NLRP3 inflammasome activation in PM-exposed human vocal fold fibroblasts (hVFFs). METHODS: Pyroptotic cell death was evaluated based on LDH release and PI staining and NLRP3 inflammasome activation via western blotting and immunoflu

Shengmai Yin Alleviates Particulate Matter-Aggravated Ischemic Damage by Inhibiting S100a9 Expression.

The issue of air pollution has had a longstanding impact on human health, specifically on the exacerbation of ischemic cardiomyopathy injury and hindered healing due to the presence of fine airborne particles. Shengmai Yin, a traditional Chinese medicine, has been used to treat coronary heart disease. In the present study, we identified a significant association among the genes S100a8, S100a9, Nppa, Nppb, and Serpine1 and myocardial ischemic injury aggravated by exposure to particulate matter (PM) using transcriptome and proteome analyses. In addition, we substantiated the involvement of S100a

Association between ambient fine particulate matter and hemorrhagic stroke in Yancheng, China.

OBJECTIVES: Ambient air pollution, particularly fine particulate matter (PM2.5), has been linked to cerebrovascular disease. However, findings on the short-term effects of PM2.5 exposure on hemorrhagic stroke (HS) have been inconsistent across studies. Therefore, this study investigated the association between short-term PM2.5 exposure and HS hospitalization in Yancheng, China. METHODS: An individual-level time-stratified case-crossover study was conducted using hospitalization records of patients with HS from four major hospitals in Yancheng between 2022 and 2024. Conditional logistic regres

Inhalable bioadhesive barrier for lung protection and clearance of fine particulate matter.

Fine particulate matter (PM) can bypass nasal filtration and accumulate in the lower respiratory tract, where prolonged deposition may cause chronic inflammation, pulmonary fibrosis, and other respiratory diseases. Although commercial nasal sprays offer protection in the upper airways, they are inadequate for safeguarding the lower respiratory tract and lung. In this study, we introduce an inhalable bioadhesive barrier (IBB) specifically engineered to deposit in the lower airways, where it forms an adhesive hydrogel barrier upon contact with airway mucus and actively scavenges inhaled fine PM.

Does distance from the vehicle headlight change the properties of particulate matter?

Understanding factors affecting particulate matter (PM), particularly light exposure from vehicle headlights, is essential for addressing air quality challenges. However, no comprehensive studies are available. This research, therefore, aims to investigate whether light produced by the vehicle headlight (Halogen type; 12V-55w) at various distances (120 cm, 70 cm, and 20 cm) for 1 hr affects the physical and thermal features of PM obtained from a gasoline vehicle at idle speed. The findings indicate that light can significantly change the properties of PM, especially at a close distance of 20 c

Effect of Particulate Matter in Atopic Dermatitis through HDACs and Filaggrin Alteration.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a skin condition that can be exacerbated by particulate matter (PM). The primary causes of AD are believed to be impairments in the skin barrier, such as filaggrin (FLG) abnormalities. Although there is substantial evidence for genetic factors contributing to AD, it is challenging to attribute the disease's predisposition solely to genetics. We hypothesize that PM may induce epigenetic modifications in AD, impacting FLG expression. Here, we assessed histone deacetylases (HDACs) and FLG levels under AD conditions with or without exposure to PM using qRT-PCR, western bl

Comprehensive Characterization of Organic Chemicals Associated with Urban Particulate Matter in China.

Atmospheric particulate matter (PM) is considered a health hazard; however, the inadequate identification of the components of PM limits our understanding of its specific toxic pollutants. Herein, by combining three extraction solvents with different polarities (dichloromethane, hexane, and acetonitrile) and three ionization modes (electron ionization and the positive and negative modes of electrospray ionization), we comprehensively analyzed the organic chemicals in the PM2.5 and PM10 samples collected during summer and winter in Beijing. Suspect screening was facilitated by comparison with t

Removal of airborne particulate matter by evergreen tree species in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Urban air quality stands as a pressing concern in cities globally, with airborne particulate matter (PM) emerging as a significant threat to human health. An investigation was carried out to examine the potential of four prevalent evergreen roadside tree species grown at different locations in Dhaka to capture PM using their leaves. The distribution of PM by mass and quantity in Dhaka are presented for the first time for Bangladesh and these results will also be applicable to countries with similar climates and tree species. Separate gravimetric analyses were carried out to quantify PM in thre

Chlorogenic acid improves urogenital dysfunction induced by exposure to ambient particulate matter.

Oxidative stress is a well-known underlying mechanism for several diseases in response to environmental pollution. Although there is a lack of evidence on the relationship between air pollution and an established risk factor for urogenital dysfunction. The aim of this study was to investigate the mechanism of particulate matter (PM) on urogenital function and evaluate the potential efficacy of chlorogenic acid (CGA) in preventing urogenital damage in rats. Forty Wistar rats were divided into five groups (n = 8): control, particulate matter exposure (animals were exposed to fine dust in an inha

Particulate matter induces ferroptosis by accumulating iron and dysregulating the antioxidant system.

Particulate matter is an air pollutant composed of various components, and has adverse effects on the human body. Particulate matter is known to induce cell death by generating an imbalance in the antioxidant system; however, the underlying mechanism has not been elucidated. In the present study, we demonstrated the cytotoxic effects of the size and composition of particulate matter on small intestine cells. We found that particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5) with extraction ion (EI) components (PM2.5 EI), is more cytotoxic than PM containing only polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Additionally
