Pasteurella multocida is frequently responsible for infections in man due to wounds inflicted by animals (generally cats or dogs). However, the development of septic arthritis is a rare complication. We report 4 cases of Pasteurella multocida septic arthritis with demonstration of the organism in the joint in each case. Two cases presented with monoarthritis (sternoclavicular joint and wrist) and 2 cases had polyarticular involvement from the outset.

A cohort of 41 New Zealand White rabbits, 35 to 60 days old, from twelve litters were followed for twelve weeks for development of pasteurellosis. Eleven of 19 rabbits in five litters acquired Pasteurella multocida infection. The incubation period was difficult to determine as P. multocida infection was detected both before and after the onset of rhinitis. The response of rabbits to infection varied from subclinical infection to death from systemic pasteurellosis. Atrophy of the maxilloturbinates of the nares was detected in rabbits with chronic rhinitis associated with P. multocida infection.

The leukotoxin of Pasteurella haemolytica has been implicated as one of the major virulence factors contributing to the pathogenesis of bovine pneumonic pasteurellosis. To gain a better understanding of the various biochemical, antigenic and toxigenic properties of the toxin, the genetic determinant (lkt) which encodes the leukotoxin has been cloned from P haemolytica serotype 1. Results from the molecular characterization of this determinant showed that four genes are required to synthesize and secrete the active toxin from P. haemolytica. This information provides the basis for genetic manip

A procedure was developed for separating antigens associated with a saline extract of Pasteurella haemolytica serotype 1. Seven antigens were identified by immunoelectrophoresis to be associated with the extract. The extract was subjected to preparative isoelectrofocusing in a pH range of 3-10. The majority of extracted proteins were found to have pI's of 4-6, whereas the carbohydrate antigen(s) were distributed over a pI range of 3.0-8.0. The fractions that were of interest were pooled and refocused in a narrower pH range to improve resolution of the protein antigens. Specific antigens from d

Lung infections of specific-pathogen-free rats were studied to determine cross-immunity between infections with Pasteurella pneumotropica and Angiostrongylus cantonensis. Rats were found to have differences in mortality due to pneumonic infections with P pneumotropica and A cantonensis and to coinfections of P pneumotropica and A cantonensis. Single infections of P pneumotropica were not dosage-dependent in their lethality for specific-pathogen-free rats. The mortality of coinfection with P pneumotropica and A cantonensis was significantly lower than that of a monoinfection with P pneumotropic

Thirty adult New Zealand white rabbits with chronic rhinitis were obtained from a commercial breeding colony. Penicillin sensitive strains of Pasteurella multocida were isolated from the upper respiratory tract of 28 (93%) of these rabbits. The diseased rabbits were treated with either intramuscular penicillin or penicillin nasal spray for 10 days and monitored for clinical signs of rhinitis and for the presence of Pasteurella multocida in the nasal passages. Rabbits receiving penicillin therapy by either route showed significant remission of the clinical signs of rhinitis during the study per

A patient with rheumatoid arthritis treated with corticosteroids developed a septic arthritis of her right knee. She had been bitten on her right leg by her pet cat 2 weeks earlier. Pasteurella multocida, resistant to penicillin, was isolated from the septic joint and from the oropharynx of the cat. The arthritis was successfully treated with ampicillin. No attempt to eradicate the organism from the cat was made because of the expectation of early recolonisation.

Pasteurella multocida is a gram-negative short rod-shaped bacteria, which is a part of the indigenous flora of the oral cavity of many animals other than man. The number of reports on cases of infections with this bacterium due to animal bites and/or scratches, bacterial infections of the respiratory tract, sepsis due to this organism and death caused by the bacteria have been increasing in recent years. We investigated P. multocida in the hair and oral cavity of 3 dogs and 29 cats according to the classification of Mutters et al.. We also studied the relationship between the carrier rate for

The bovine respiratory disease (BRD) complex is a major health and welfare challenge in the cattle industry worldwide, with substantial economic and antimicrobial resistance implications. Pasteurella multocida (PM) is a key bacterial agent of BRD; however, knowledge gaps remain regarding its transmission dynamics, genomic diversity and virulence-associated gene repertoire in cattle. In this cross-sectional study, we used population genomics to characterize PM isolates circulating in Norwegian calves and compare them with global bovine PM lineages. By integrating genomics with epidemiological a

Pasteurella multocida is a gram-negative coccobacillus commonly found in the oral flora of cats and dogs. While often associated with soft tissue infections, such as cellulitis and skin abscess following animal bites or scratches, empyema due to P. multocida is rare and primarily described in case reports. We present a case of a middle-aged woman with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), diagnosed with empyema with a complicated course that required long-term antibiotic therapy. Her sputum cultures grew P. multocida; despite living with pet dogs and cats, she denied any recent

Pasteurella multocida is a non-spore forming gram-negative organism characterized morphologically as coccobacillus. It is frequently isolated from the nasopharynx of domestic and wild animals, and is the most common cause of soft-tissue infection in humans following bites or scratches from dogs and cats. It is easily overgrowth by other flora in the sputum and may be regularly overlook, as it resembles Haemophilus influenzae, Francisella tularensis, and Yersinia pestis. The five species that cause the majority of pasteurellosis are: multocida, septica, canis, stomatis, and dagmatis. Pasteurell

Fowl cholera is an infectious disease that affects both poultry and wild birds, characterized by hemorrhagic and septicemic symptoms, caused by Pasteurella multocida (P. multocida), and leading to substantial economic losses in the poultry sector. The development of genetic engineering vaccines against avian P. multocida encountered early-stage challenges due to the limited availability of effective gene editing tools. Presently, NgAgoDM-enhanced homologous recombination stands as a potent technique for achieving efficient gene knockout in avian P. multocida. Hence, this study employed NgAgoDM

A 5-month-old previously healthy female presented with a one-week history of fever and increased fussiness. Her presentation revealed an ill-appearing infant with an exam and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) studies concerning bacterial meningitis; CSF cultures grew Pasteurella multocida. Additionally, brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated cervical osteomyelitis. Despite multiple days of antibiotic therapy, she remained febrile with continued pain; MRI showed oligoarticular effusions, and aspiration of these joints yielded bloody aspirates. Gross and microscopic pathology caused by an atypical strain of Pasteurella gallinarum (Fresno strain) was compared in chickens with that caused by the American Type Culture Collection type strain. Ten 21-day-old broiler chickens were inoculated intranasally with 10(7) colony forming units or intramuscularly with 10(5) colony forming units of either strain. The birds were killed 7 days later, and gross and microscopic lesions were studied. Grossly, there was extensive white discoloration of pectoral muscles with mild fibrinous exudate in birds inoculated intramuscularly with the Fresno strain

Isolates of the genera Pasteurella and Mannheimia cause a wide variety of diseases of great economic importance in poultry, pigs, cattle and rabbits. Antimicrobial agents represent the most powerful tools to control such infections. However, increasing rates of antimicrobial resistance may dramatically reduce the efficacy of the antimicrobial agents used to control Pasteurella and Mannheimia infections. This review presents a short summary of the infections caused by Pasteurella and Mannheimia isolates in food-producing animals and the possibilities of preventing and controlling primary and se
