Emanuel syndrome due to unusual segregation of paternal origin.

Emanuel syndrome is an inherited chromosomal abnormality resulting from 3:1 meiotic segregation from parental balanced translocation carrier t(11;22)(q23;q11), mostly of maternal origin. It is characterized by mental retardation, microcephaly, preauricular tag or sinus, ear anomalies, cleft or high arched palate, micrognathia, congenital heart diseases, kidney abnormalities, structural brain anomalies and genital anomalies in male. Here in, we describe a female patient with supernumerary der(22) syndrome (Emanuel syndrome) due to balanced translocation carrier father t(11;22) (q23;q11). She wa

Maternal and paternal filicides: a retrospective review of filicides in Finland.

The purpose of this retrospective study was to illustrate the differences in maternal and paternal filicides in Finland during a 25-year period. In the sample of 200 filicides [neonaticides (n = 56), filicide-suicides (n = 75), other filicides (n = 69)], the incidence was 5.09 deaths per 100,000 live births: 59 percent of filicides were committed by mothers, 39 percent by fathers, and 2 percent by stepfathers. The mean age of the maternal victims (1.6 y) was significantly lower than that of the paternal victims (5.6 y), but no correlation between the sex of the victim and the sex of the perpet

Case-control analysis of paternal age and trisomic anomalies.

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether older paternal age increases the risk of fathering a pregnancy with Patau (trisomy 13), Edwards (trisomy 18), Klinefelter (XXY) or XYY syndrome. DESIGN: Case-control: cases with each of these syndromes were matched to four controls with Down syndrome from within the same congenital anomaly register and with maternal age within 6 months. SETTING: Data from 22 EUROCAT congenital anomaly registers in 12 European countries. PARTICIPANTS: Diagnoses with observed or (for terminations) predicted year of birth from 1980 to 2005, comprising live births, fetal deaths

Association of paternal age with prevalence of selected birth defects.

BACKGROUND: Unlike maternal age, the effect of paternal age on birth defect prevalence has not been well examined. We used cases from the Texas birth defect registry, born during 1996-2002, to evaluate the association of paternal age with the prevalence of selected structural birth defects. METHODS: Poisson regression was used to calculate prevalence ratios (PRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) associated with paternal age for each birth defect, adjusting for maternal age, race/ethnicity, and parity. RESULTS: Relative to fathers ages 25-29 years, fathers 20-24 years of age were more likel

Induced paternal effects mimic cytoplasmic incompatibility in Drosophila.

Wolbachia is an intracellular microbe found in a wide diversity of arthropod and filarial nematode hosts. In arthropods these common bacteria are reproductive parasites that manipulate central elements of their host's reproduction to increase their own maternal transmission in one of several ways. Cytoplasmic incompatibility (CI) is one such manipulation where sperm are somehow modified in infected males and this modification must be rescued by the presence of the same bacterial strain in the egg for normal development to proceed. The molecular mechanisms involved in the expression of CI are u

Trigonocephaly in a boy with paternally inherited deletion 22q11.2 syndrome.

Deletion 22q11.2 syndrome is a well-known contiguous gene syndrome, for which the list of findings is extensive and varies from patient to patient. We encountered a unique patient who had a familial 3-Mb deletion 22q11.2 associated with trigonocephaly derived from craniosynostosis of the metopic suture. Almost all the symptoms of the patient, including polymicrogyria, microcephaly, facial abnormalities, internal anomalies, seizures, and mental retardation, were compatible with deletion 22q11.2 syndrome, except for synostosis of the metopic suture. This is the first report of a relationship bet

Paternal origin of FGFR3 mutations in Muenke-type craniosynostosis.

Muenke syndrome, also known as FGFR3-associated coronal synostosis, is defined molecularly by the presence of a heterozygous nucleotide transversion, c.749C>G, encoding the amino acid substitution Pro250Arg, in the fibroblast growth factor receptor type 3 gene (FGFR3). This frequently occurs as a new mutation, manifesting one of the highest documented rates for any transversion in the human genome. To understand the biology of this mutation, we have investigated its parental origin, and the ages of the parents, in 19 families with de novo c.749C>G mutations. All ten informative cases originate

Abortion, changed paternity, and risk of preeclampsia in nulliparous women.

A prior birth confers a strong protective effect against preeclampsia, whereas a prior abortion confers a weaker protective effect. Parous women who change partners in a subsequent pregnancy appear to lose the protective effect of a prior birth. This study (Calcium for Preeclampsia Prevention Trial, 1992-1995) examines whether nulliparous women with a prior abortion who change partners also lose the protective effect of the prior pregnancy. A cohort analysis was conducted among participants in this large clinical trial of calcium supplementation to prevent preeclampsia. Subjects were nulliparo

Adverse childhood experiences and risk of paternity in teen pregnancy.

OBJECTIVE: Few studies have investigated risk factors that predispose males to be involved in teen pregnancies. To provide new information on such factors, we examined the relationships of eight common adverse childhood experiences to a male's risk of impregnating a teenager. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using questionnaire responses from 7399 men who visited a primary care clinic of a large health maintenance organization in California. Data included age of the youngest female ever impregnated; the man's own age at the time; his history of childhood emotional, physical,

Paternal germline mosaicism in Herlitz junctional epidermolysis bullosa.

We studied a single patient with the lethal (Herlitz) type of junctional epidermolysis bullosa (H-JEB). Screening for mutations in the LAMB3 gene in the patient revealed the previously described hotspot mutation R635X and a novel one basepair deletion in exon 10. The single basepair deletion 1094delA could be detected in the clinically unaffected mother, while the nonsense mutation R635X could not be found in the peripheral blood DNA of either parent. After excluding non-paternity by microsatellite analysis using random markers on chromosomes 3, 8 and 18, we determined that the mutation R635X

Excess paternal age in apparently sporadic osteogenesis imperfecta.

The objective of this study was to examine whether parental age is associated with the occurrence of apparently sporadic osteogenesis imperfecta (OI). We compared parental age and the joint distribution of maternal and paternal age with expected distributions based on statutory birth records for each year and location of birth. The study included patients with OI based in the United Kingdom. The study was restricted to cases born in England, Wales, and Scotland between 1961 and 1998. Subgroup analysis was by clinical type [Sillence et al., 1979: J Med Genet 16:101-116] and apparent mode of inh

Paternal military service and risk for childhood leukemia in offspring.

To assess the association between paternal military service and risk for childhood leukemia, the authors analyzed data from three case-control studies conducted by the Children's Cancer Group from 1983 to 1993. A total of 605 acute myeloid leukemia (AML, age < or = 18 years) cases, 2,117 acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL, age < or = 14 years) cases, and 3,155 individually matched controls were included in these studies. Paternal military history and other exposure data were obtained in 2,343 matched case-control sets, including 1,805 ALL and 528 AML cases. Paternal general military service was

Paternal centrosomal dynamics in early human development and infertility.

PURPOSE: Our purpose was to demonstrate the dynamics of the human sperm centrosome during fertilization and cleavage. METHODS: Human gametes, fertilized oocytes, and preimplantation embryos were examined by transmission electron microscopy. RESULTS: The functional sperm centrosome containing a typical centriole (proximal) is inherited at fertilization and forms a sperm monoaster. It then replicates and is perpetuated during cleavage. It organizes the mitotic apparatus at each stage of cleavage up to the hatching blastocyst stage. Bipolar spindles are formed in all monospermic and most disper

Paternity after cryptorchidism: lack of correlation with age at orchidopexy.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether paternity is decreased among men who were formerly unilaterally or bilaterally cryptorchid and to ascertain whether paternity is related to their age at orchidopexy. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Men who underwent orchidopexy between 1955 and 1969 at the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh (363) and a group of age-matched control men (336) were surveyed by questionnaire and their medical records reviewed. RESULTS: Of the married men, significantly more of the unilateral cryptorchid (75%) and control (76%) groups had fathered children than had the bilateral cryptorchid g

[Some difficulties in the "paternalization" process in medically assisted reproduction].

Based on the observation of a child born by IAD, suffering of depression and presenting a school phobia, the author discusses the feeling of impotency experienced by the legal father. In another case, the grand-father-to-be is ready to donate his sperm so as to avoid issues on genetics: it is doubtful that such birth conditions would permit a healty organization of fatherhood. Included in the article are references on the literature concerning psychopathology of children born by IAD.

Occupational paternal exposure to benzene and risk of spontaneous abortion.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the risk of spontaneous abortion among the wives of male workers occupationally exposed to benzene. METHODS: The wives of 823 men working in two chemical plants at the time of the study were asked to complete a questionnaire describing their pregnancies. The analysis of the 1739 pregnancies that ended in a spontaneous abortion or a birth is presented. The firms' payroll records provided all workers' employment history, including dates. Benzene exposure, graded at two levels (< 5, > or = 5 ppm), was determined for every job, so that benzene

A case-control study of paternal smoking and birth defects.

Although the influence of paternal smoking on birth defects is of great public interest, epidemiological evidence concerning this potential relationship is extremely limited. A stratified random sample of 29 hospitals in the Shanghai Municipality, China, was used to select 1012 birth defects cases and controls. Mothers of the cases and controls were interviewed in the hospitals from October 1986 to September 1987. A modest relationship between paternal smoking and overall birth defects in offspring was identified [odds ratio (OR) = 1.21, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.01-1.45]. More markedly
