Pathology: a pictorial review. A selected atlas of paediatric liver pathology.

Indications for liver biopsy in children are often specific to this age group, especially in young children for the diagnosis of cholestasis. Since liver biopsies are quite unfrequent in the children population and concern rare but various diseases, it is recommended to entrust the analysis to a specialized liver pathologist, in a laboratory where cryoconservation, specific immuno-stainings, enzymatic studies, and electron microscopy can be performed. Histology is complementary to other methods for the diagnosis, and is valuable for the evaluation of the prognosis, especially the staging of fi

A benchmark study of vision and pathology foundation models for computational pathology.

To advance precision medicine in pathology, artificial intelligence (AI)-driven foundation models must generalize across diverse datasets, tissues, and clinical tasks. However, their comparative performance and generalizability in computational pathology remain incompletely characterized. Here, we benchmark 32 AI foundation models across four categories, including general vision models (VM), general vision-language models (VLM), pathology-specific vision models (Path-VM), and pathology-specific vision-language models (Path-VLM), using slide- and patch-level tasks from The Cancer Genome Atlas (

Immune aspects of pathology of the placental bed contributing to pregnancy pathology.

Interest has recently focused on the role of the placental bed in the pathogenesis of a variety of pregnancy disorders. Considerable advances have been made in the understanding of the complex relationships between maternal and fetal trophoblast in the placental bed in normal pregnancy. Invasion of uterine spiral arteries by extravillous trophoblast effects the physiological changes required to accommodate increased blood flow to the fetoplacental unit. Control of trophoblast invasion may depend on intrinsic properties, such as production of proteolytic enzymes and expression of a non-classica

Pathology of Kawasaki disease: I. Pathology and morphogenesis of the vascular changes.

Histopathological investigation of the vascular changes in Kawasaki disease was carried out on thirty-seven autopsied Japanese patients. Arterial lesions could be classified into following five stages from the view point of morphogenesis of arteritis; 1) endothelial degeneration and increased vascular permeability, 2) edema and degeneration of the media, 3) necrotizing panarteritis, 4) granulation formation, and 5) scarformation. Aneurysm with thrombus was observed mainly in the coronary artery in most patients. It is considered that the initial changes begins in the endothelial cells with inc

Dementia with Lewy bodies showing advanced Lewy pathology but minimal Alzheimer pathology--Lewy pathology causes neuronal loss inducing progressive dementia.

The present study concerns an autopsied case of dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) showing advanced Lewy pathology but minimal Alzheimer pathology. The patient was a 50-year-old Japanese male without inheritance. His initial symptoms at the age of 43 suggested the diagnosis ofjuvenile idiopathic Parkinson's disease (PD), but were followed by memory disturbance 1 year later. He showed parkinsonism, dementia, personality change, fluctuating cognition and visual hallucinations 3 years later. Neuroradiological examination revealed moderate brain atrophy, predominantly in the frontal and temporal lobe

Immunohistochemistry in placental pathology.

Although the clinical background, gross and hematoxylin-eosin examination usually suffice for the placental diagnosis, immunohistochemistry (IHC) is essential in many cases, particularly in high-risk pregnancy. The double E-cadherin/CD34 immuno-stain is the backbone of it, particularly for diagnosing the early fetal vascular malper-fusion (FVM) characterized by the endothelial fragmentation preceding the villous hypovascularity/avascularity of distal FVM. The stain is 3-4 times more sensitive than the stromal vascular karyorrhexis, the other early FVM lesion. The endothelial fragmentation may

Renal Pathology of Ciliopathies.

Renal ciliopathies are a group of genetic disorders that affect the function of the primary cilium in the kidney, as well as other organs. Since primary cilia are important for regulation of cell signaling pathways, ciliary dysfunction results in a range of clinical manifestations, including renal failure, cyst formation, and hypertension. We summarize the current understanding of the pathophysiological and pathological features of renal ciliopathies in childhood, including autosomal dominant and recessive polycystic kidney disease, nephronophthisis, and Bardet-Biedl syndrome, as well as skele

Pediatric Temporomandibular Joint Pathology.

Pediatric temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders represent a broad range of congenital and acquired diagnoses. Dentofacial deformities, including facial asymmetry, retrognathism, and malocclusion, commonly develop. Compared with adult TMJ conditions, pain and articular disc pathology are less common. Accurate diagnosis is paramount in planning and prognostication. Several specific considerations apply in preparation for skeletal correction, including timing in relation to disease progression and growth trajectory, expectation for postcorrection stability, reconstructive technique as it applie

Pediatric Salivary Gland Pathology.

Benign and malignant salivary gland disorders are uncommon in the pediatric population; however, these can be frequently seen in pediatric otolaryngology or oral and maxillofacial surgery practices. The astute clinician should be aware of the clinical presentation, diagnosis, and management options for common inflammatory, infectious, benign, and malignant disorders of salivary glands.

Pathology Mimicking Orofacial Pain.

A case of a 64-year-old woman is reported, who developed new-onset pain over a preexisting area of right mandibular fullness. Clinical examination, MRI, and fine-needle aspiration cytology confirmed the diagnosis of a benign parotid gland tumor-pleomorphic adenoma, which was treated by total parotidectomy with complete removal of the tumor. When evaluating a patient with orofacial pain, oral health care providers should be cognizant of all potential differential diagnoses, especially in the setting of red flags such as persistent or enlarging facial swelling/fullness.

Craniosynostosis: A Reversible Pathology?

The formation of the cranial sutures, in utero, occurs when the ossification of the skull bones reaches predestined positions around gestational week 15 to 20. Craniosynostosis, and the consequent skull shape deformities, is treated with surgery including osteotomies of the fused sutures. The occasional appearance of a new suture in the osteotomy lines has previously been described as sporadic events. In this retrospective study, a 4-year consecutive series of osteotomies combined with springs for craniosynostosis were systematically analysed regarding the appearance of neosutures. In total, 8

Pathology of cholangiocellular carcinoma.

Cholangiocellular carcinoma (CCC) is a malignant tumor harboring a poor prognosis, occurring in the liver, gallbladder and in extra- or intrahepatic biliary ducts. The article reviews the topic concerning CCC from the point of view of a surgical pathologist. The paper deals with classification of CCC into an intrahepatic/peripheral and hilar/extrahepatic subtype with different morphology, molecular features and prognosis; together with classical gross pathology, histopathology and natural history of CCC. Hilar and extrahepatic CCC share some biological characteristics with pancreatic ductal ad

The Pathology of Hyperthyroidism.

This article reviews those pathologic lesions which are associated with clinical and/or biochemical hyperthyroidism. Beginning with the descriptive pathology of classical Graves' disease and the less common toxic nodular goiter and hyper-functioning thyroid nodules, this paper describes the effects of non-thyroidal hormones, glandular function (including pituitary and hypothalamic lesions), ectopic production of thyroid stimulating proteins by non-thyroidal neoplasms, exogenous drug reactions causing hyper-function and finally conditions associated with a mechanic- destructive cause of hyperth

Speech Language Pathology Rehabilitation.

The speech language pathologist has a vital management role in patients with voice and swallow concerns, as well as stroke patients and patients with fluency problems. This article summarizes the variety of speech and swallow rehabilitation that adult patients may require or seek. The case examples allow the reader to base the clinical decision-making process within the context of a patient presentation and elucidate the role of speech and language pathology services for the primary care provider in order to refer patients with symptoms and concerns to the right provider early in their medical

Pathology of Anal Cancer.

Anal canal cancer is rather an uncommon disease but its incidence is increasing. Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the most frequent primary anal neoplasm and can encompass a variety of morphologies. HPV infection has a key role in precancerous lesions and cancer development by the production of E6 and E7 oncoproteins. Anal squamous precancerous lesions are now classified according to the same criteria and terminology as their cervical counterparts. The p16 expression by immunohistochemistry is a surrogate marker for human papilloma virus (HPV). Many other tumor types can arise in the anal cana

Update on conjunctival pathology.

Conjunctival biopsies constitute a fairly large number of cases in a typical busy ophthalmic pathology practice. They range from a single biopsy through multiple mapping biopsies to assess the extent of a particular pathological process. Like most anatomical sites, the conjunctiva is subject to a very wide range of pathological processes. This article will cover key, commonly encountered nonneoplastic and neoplastic entities. Where relevant, sections will include recommendations on how best to submit specimens to the ophthalmic pathology laboratory and the relevance of up-to-date molecular tec
