Decrease of visual acuity in patients with clear media and normal fundi. Objective screening methods for differentiation and documentation.

For differentiation of unilateral reduction of visual acuity in patients with clear media and normal fundi, the Swinging Flashlight Test was used. Optic neuropathies as a rule give pathological results. On the other hand refraction scotomas, functional amblyopias and malingering produce a normal outcome of this test in general. For documentation of afferent pupillary defects a photographic method is described. Electronystagmography is advocated as a method for detection of malingerers and neurotics among patients complaining of acute uni- or bilateral visual acuity reduction. Optokinetic nysta

Clinical characteristics and triage acuity of patients at Kanazawa university hospital after the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake.

BACKGROUND: The Noto Peninsula earthquake of January 1, 2024, was the most destructive seismic event in Japan since 2011, affecting a region characterized by its super-aging population, geographical isolation, and status as a medically underserved area. These vulnerabilities require a detailed analysis of the acute-phase medical response to improve disaster preparedness in similar environments. This study aims to characterize the morbidity and features of earthquake-affected patients admitted to a regional tertiary university hospital. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective observational study

Postoperative Visual Acuity Outcomes After Phacoemulsification in Patients With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A Systematic Review.

Cataract surgery is commonly performed in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), but concerns persist regarding postoperative visual recovery even before the onset of diabetic retinopathy. Understanding outcomes in this population is essential for evidence-based counselling and perioperative management. Our objective in this systematic review was to evaluate postoperative visual acuity outcomes following phacoemulsification in adults with T2DM without diabetic retinopathy or diabetic macular oedema, compared with non-diabetic individuals. A systematic search of Web of Science, Scopus, an

Compensatory saccades in head impulse testing influence the dynamic visual acuity of patients with unilateral peripheral vestibulopathy1.

BACKGROUND: Both the dynamic visual acuity (DVA) test and the video head-impulse test (vHIT) are fast and simple ways to assess peripheral vestibulopathy. After losing peripheral vestibular function, some patients show better DVA performance than others, suggesting good compensatory mechanisms. It seems possible that compensatory covert saccades could be responsible for improved DVA. OBJECTIVE: To investigate VOR gain and compensatory saccades with vHIT and compare them to the DVA of patients with unilateral peripheral vestibulopathy. METHODS: VOR gain deficit and compensatory saccades were

Machine Learning Model for Predicting Visual Acuity Improvement After Intrastromal Corneal Ring Surgery in Patients With Keratoconus.

BACKGROUND: Keratoconus is a progressive, degenerative corneal disease that can lead to significant visual impairment. The intrastromal ring segment implantation procedure is effective in reshaping the cornea and improving vision. However, vision does not improve postoperatively in all operated eyes, and the results vary widely among patients, making it challenging to predict postoperative visual gain. PURPOSE: This study investigated the potential of machine learning in predicting postoperative visual acuity in keratoconus patients undergoing intrastromal ring segment implantation with the a

Predictive validity of resource-adjusted Korean Triage and Acuity Scale in pediatric gastrointestinal tract foreign body patients.

Although paediatric patients with gastrointestinal (GI) foreign bodies require multiple resources, they often present with few or no discernible symptoms and are typically assigned a low acuity level during triage. We compared the predictive accuracy of the revised Korean Triage and Acuity Scale (rKTAS), which elevates acuity by one step in relation to anticipated resource utilization, with that of the conventional KTAS for clinical outcomes. This was a retrospective study of National Emergency Department Information System data. Data on patient and ED characteristics, resources used, and clin

Best-corrected visual acuity results facilitate molecular diagnosis of infantile nystagmus patients harboring FRMD7 mutations.

The visual function of patients with infantile nystagmus (IN) can be significantly decreased owing to constant eye movement. While, reaching a definitive diagnosis becomes a challenge due to genetic heterozygous of this disease. To address it, we investigated whether best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) results can facilitate the molecular diagnosis of IN patients harboring FRMD7 mutations. 200 patients with IN from 55 families and 133 sporadic cases were enrolled. Mutations were comprehensively screened by direct sequencing using gene-specific primers for FRMD7. We also retrieved related liter
