Shared Decision-Making for Patients Hospitalized with Acute Myocardial Infarction: A Randomized Trial.

OBJECTIVE: Adherence to guideline-recommended medications after acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is suboptimal. Patient fidelity to treatment regimens may be related to their knowledge of the risk of death following AMI, the pros and cons of medications, and to their involvement in treatment decisions. Shared decision-making may improve both patients' knowledge and involvement in treatment decisions. METHODS: In a pilot trial, patients hospitalized with AMI were randomized to the use of the AMI Choice conversation tool or to usual care. AMI Choice includes a pictogram of the patient's estima

Abdominal Wall Dyskinesia: Case Report.

The clinical presentation of repetitive choreiform involuntary movements of the anterior abdominal wall was first introduced as "belly dancer's dyskinesia." Etiologies of this rare condition include idiopathic causes, medication inducement, or post-abdominal surgery. We report a case of orobuccal stereotypic movements and abdominal wall dyskinesia secondary to prochlorperazine intake. The movements began 2 weeks after cessation of prochlorperazine. The patient took this dopamine receptor-blocking medication for 6 months to treat nausea due to chemotherapy. To our knowledge, abdominal wall dysk

Assessment of Patients' Awareness of Anticoagulant Use in Atrial Fibrillation: A Cross-Sectional Survey.

OBJECTIVE: Atrial fibrillation (AF) increases thromboembolic risk, and oral anticoagulants (OACs) substantially reduce this risk; however, their safe and effective use requires adequate patient knowledge. We aimed to assess AF- and OAC-related awareness among Turkish patients and to identify predictors of knowledge. METHOD: This single-center, cross-sectional survey was conducted between July 1, 2024 and January 1, 2025, and included consecutive adults with non-valvular AF receiving warfarin or direct OACs for at least three months. A structured questionnaire collected data on demographic cha

Empowering Pharmacists in Heartburn Management: Practical Insights for OTC Treatment and Self-Care.

Heartburn is a prevalent and frequently self-managed condition, with a myriad of over-the-counter (OTC) treatment options available for self-care. The potential for misinterpretation of drug labels and improper OTC medication selection may result in inadequate treatment, potential drug interactions, as well as medication overuse, misuse, or delay in seeking treatment for a more serious health condition. As highly accessible healthcare professionals, pharmacists play a crucial role in validating self-diagnoses, in guiding appropriate OTC medication selection and use, and in educating patients o

Patient and Family Perspectives on Statutory Duty of Candour Following Serious Adverse Patient Safety Events.

BACKGROUND: The Statutory Duty of Candour (SDC) legally requires healthcare organisations to notify patients, families, and carers who experience a serious adverse patient safety event (SAPSE), provide an apology, and explain steps taken to prevent recurrence. However, despite growing international adoption of SDC, evidence on its implementation and impact on patients and families ('consumers') remains limited. This study examined consumer awareness, understanding, and lived experiences of SDC in Victoria, Australia, two years after its introduction. METHODS: A mixed-methods study integrated

Clinical significance of topical instillation technique in Japanese glaucoma patients.

The clinical significance of a proper eye drop application technique was evaluated in Japanese glaucoma patients. Patients diagnosed with primary open-angle glaucoma having intraocular pressure (IOP) greater than 21 mmHg were treated with eye drops at home. In some patients, however, the topical treatment was ineffective. They returned to the hospital to receive surgical treatment. On admission, 56% of these patients had IOP greater than 21 mmHg. Patient instillation technique was evaluated based on the proximity of the eyedropper tip to the eyes, application position, eyelid closure, treatmen

Physicians' attitudes, beliefs, and practices regarding AIDS health care promotion.

While there is now evidence that health-promoting education can be effective at reducing transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, little is known of the role of the practicing physician in this process. We have surveyed 301 practicing physicians in Northeastern Ohio over a 2-year period and we have assessed their attitudes, beliefs, and practices regarding preventive education with particular reference to HIV. We have found that while the majority of physicians believe strongly that HIV prevention is important and that physicians should play a prominent role in education,

The effect of remote treatment on medical provider creative thinking and patient disclosure: protocol for the MED-CREATE trial.

BACKGROUND: Open doctor-patient communication is essential for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment. However, the communication modality (video consultation vs. in-person visit) may impact the process and create tradeoffs. Previous research suggests that while online communication negatively affects creative thinking, it can also enhance disclosure. This study seeks to investigate how the communication modality utilized in medical settings influences both creative idea generation on the part of clinicians and disclosure on the part of patients. Drawing upon established frameworks in heal
