Risk factors for 30-day readmission in patients undergoing ventral hernia repair.

BACKGROUND: Ventral hernia repair (VHR), an increasingly common procedure, may have a greater impact on health care costs than is currently appreciated. Readmissions have the potential to further increase these costs and negatively impact patient outcomes. New national registry data allows for an in-depth look at the predictors and rates of readmission after VHR. METHODS: The American College of Surgeon's National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database was queried for all patients who underwent only an incisional or VHR in 2011. Patients who had any concomitant procedure were excluded.

Factors influencing readmission after pancreaticoduodenectomy: a multi-institutional study of 1302 patients.

OBJECTIVE AND BACKGROUND: Morbidity, mortality, and length of hospital stay after pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) have significantly decreased over recent decades. Despite this progress, early readmission rates after PD have been reported as high as 50%. Few reports have delineated factors associated with readmission after PD. METHODS: The medical records of 6 high-volume institutions were reviewed for patients who underwent PD between 2005 and 2010. Data collection included patient characteristics, medical comorbidities, and perioperative factors. Analysis included readmissions up to 90 days af

Predictors for readmission risk of new patients: the Nordic Comparative Study on Sectorized Psychiatry.

OBJECTIVE: Predictors for readmission risk were investigated in this study, which forms part of the Nordic Comparative Study on Sectorized Psychiatry. METHOD: Included were a total of 837 consecutive 'new' patients (not in contact with the psychiatric services for at least 18 months) admitted to in-patient stay during a period of 1 year to seven psychiatric hospitals in four Nordic countries. RESULTS: Multivariate survival analyses showed that younger age predicted increased readmission risk. Stratifying on gender, diagnostic group and sector revealed a general pattern concerning age which w

Nurse Staffing and 30-day Readmission of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Patients: A 10-year Retrospective Study of Patient Hospitalization.

PURPOSE: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a leading cause of morbidity in many countries, and it has high rate of hospital readmissions due to recurrent exacerbations of the disease. Many previous studies have suggested further examination of the factors that contribute to hospital readmissions of COPD patients. However, evidence on the effects of nurse staffing by registered nurses (RNs) on the readmission of COPD patients is lacking in Korea. The aim of our study was to evaluate the effects of nurse staffing on hospital readmissions of COPD patients. METHODS: We used National

Underperformance of Machine Learning Algorithms Predicting Extended Lengths of Stay and Readmission in Underrepresented Patient Cohorts After Primary Total Hip Arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: The demand for total hip arthroplasty (THA) is increasing, yet disparities in access and outcomes persist across racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups. Machine learning (ML) models can aid in predicting THA complications such as prolonged lengths of stay (LOS) and 30-day readmission, which is particularly useful for populations at risk of poorer outcomes. However, limited studies to date have assessed ML prediction performance in smaller patient subcohorts that are less commonly represented. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the fairness and performance of ML model predictio

The Influence of Hospital Type, Insurance Type, and Patient Income on 30-Day Complication and Readmission Rates Following Lumbar Spine Fusion.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Several studies have shown that factors such as insurance type and patient income are associated with different readmission rates following certain orthopaedic procedures. The literature, however, remains sparse with regard to these demographic characteristics and their associations to perioperative lumbar spine fusion outcomes. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to assess the associations between hospital type, insurance type, and patient median income to both 30-day complication and readmission rates following lumbar spine fusion. PATIENT SAMPLE: Patients who underw

Readmissions to a Surgical Intensive Care Unit: Incidence and Risk Stratification for Personalized Patient Care.

Background/Objectives: Unplanned readmission to the surgical intensive care unit (UR-SICU) is a serious adverse event linked to higher morbidity, prolonged stay, and increased mortality. Most evidence derives from mixed ICUs, limiting applicability to surgical cohorts. We aimed to identify risk factors for UR-SICU and assess their impact on outcomes. Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study of adults admitted to a 20-bed SICU in a tertiary hospital between June 2021 and December 2022 after non-cardiac surgery (elective, urgent, trauma, or liver transplantation). Patients dying during

Long-term impact of air pollution on heart failure readmission in unstable angina patients.

Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death worldwide, with air pollution's impact on cardiovascular health being closely monitored. However, the specific effects of air pollution on the risk of hospital readmission for heart failure (HF) in patients with unstable angina (UA) have not been fully explored. We conducted a retrospective study involving 12,857 consecutive patients diagnosed with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) between January 2015 and March 2023. After rigorous screening, we included 8,737 patients with UA in the analysis. Furthermore, we used a Cox proportional hazard

Body mass index interacts with sex to predict readmission in in-patients with alcohol use disorder.

A previous highly controlled pilot study revealed that body mass index (BMI) predicts outcome of in-patients with alcohol use disorder (AUD) in a sex-specific manner. We here provide translational evidence from a daily clinical routine setting and investigated whether BMI and sex interact to predict 24-month readmission risk in four naturalistic cohorts of a specialized addiction clinic (i.e., all patients admitted to the clinic from 2016 to 2020): (i) in-patients (443 males and 197 females) and (ii) day clinic patients (241 males and 103 females) with a primary diagnosis of AUD; (iii) in-pati
