Feasibility of geometric-intensity-based semi-automated delineation of the tentorium cerebelli from MRI scans.

This paper describes a feasibility study of a method for delineating the tentorium cerebelli in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) brain scans. The tentorium cerebelli is a thin sheet of dura matter covering the cerebellum and separating it from the posterior part of the temporal lobe and the occipital lobe of the cerebral hemispheres. Cortical structures such as the parahippocampal gyrus can be indistinguishable from tentorium in magnetized prepared rapid gradient echo and T1-weighted MRI scans. Similar intensities in these neighboring regions make it difficult to perform accurate cortical anal

Noninvasive organization analysis along consecutive episodes of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common cardiac arrhythmia in clinical practice. Although its mechanisms are incompletely understood, electrophysiological and structural remodeling of the atria seem to play an important role in the arrhythmia transition from paroxysmal to persistent. However, the time course of the atrial remodeling along onward episodes of non-induced paroxysmal AF has not been investigated yet. In this work, a non-invasive method, based on the regularity estimation of AF through sample entropy (SampEn), has been used to assess the organization evolution along onward epis

Diagnosis of dental deformities in cephalometry images using support vector machine.

This paper proposes an automated target recognition algorithm using Support Vector Machine (SVM) to extract landmark points for craniofacial features in cephalometry radiograph. The features are extracted by subjecting the radiograph to the Projected Principle Edge Distribution (PPED) algorithm. Edge flags are accumulated in every four columns and spatial distribution of edge flags are represented by a histogram. The resultants are the front end of support vector machine. Vectors, which possess land marks, are separated from all other vectors. The centroid points, automatically determined from

Live level set: a hybrid method of livewire and level set for medical image segmentation.

Livewire and level set are popular methods for medical image segmentation. In this article, the authors propose a hybrid method of livewire and level set, termed the live level set (LLS). The LLS replaces the one graph update iteration in the classic livewire with two iterations of graph updates. The first iteration generates an initial contour for a level set computation. The level set distance is then factored back into the cost function in the second iteration of graph update. The authors validated LLS using synthetic images. The results show that the performance of the LLS is superior to b

A fuzzy clustering neural network architecture for classification of ECG arrhythmias.

Accurate and computationally efficient means of classifying electrocardiography (ECG) arrhythmias has been the subject of considerable research effort in recent years. This study presents a comparative study of the classification accuracy of ECG signals using a well-known neural network architecture named multi-layered perceptron (MLP) with backpropagation training algorithm, and a new fuzzy clustering NN architecture (FCNN) for early diagnosis. The ECG signals are taken from MIT-BIH ECG database, which are used to classify 10 different arrhythmias for training. These are normal sinus rhythm,

Automating genomic data mining via a sequence-based matrix format and associative rule set.

There is an enormous amount of information encoded in each genome--enough to create living, responsive and adaptive organisms. Raw sequence data alone is not enough to understand function, mechanisms or interactions. Changes in a single base pair can lead to disease, such as sickle-cell anemia, while some large megabase deletions have no apparent phenotypic effect. Genomic features are varied in their data types and annotation of these features is spread across multiple databases. Herein, we develop a method to automate exploration of genomes by iteratively exploring sequence data for correlat

Multivariate classifications of transitional cell tumors of the bladder: nuclear abnormality index and pattern recognition analysis.

The authors report their experiences in applying two types of computer-aided multivariate classification systems in transitional cell tumors of the bladder. The systems are based on nuclear changes in urothelial papillary lesions. 19 out of 54 parameters, selected on the basis of the overlapping area between contiguous grades and the monotonic function, were combined mathematically to obtain the nuclear abnormality index. This index expresses the progressive nuclear abnormalities as a single number on a continuous scale from 0.5 to 2.6. The standard deviation (SD) of the 10 largest nuclear are

Distributed Artificial Intelligence for Organizational and Behavioral Recognition of Bees and Ants.

Scientific studies have demonstrated how certain insect species can be used as bioindicators and reverse environmental degradation through their behavior and organization. Studying these species involves capturing and extracting hundreds of insects from a colony for subsequent study, analysis, and observation. This allows researchers to classify the individuals and also determine the organizational structure and behavioral patterns of the insects within colonies. The miniaturization of hardware devices for data and image acquisition, coupled with new Artificial Intelligence techniques such as

Synthetic Priors for Real-World Detection: A Label-Free Framework for Identifying Ultra-Rare Objects.

Detecting ultra-rare objects (frequency < 10-6) without positive annotations remains a critical challenge in computer vision. We propose a Synthesis-Prior Driven paradigm that eliminates the need for real positive samples. Our core insight is that models trained on statistically and perceptually indistinguishable synthetic data can generalize effectively to real-world environments. To achieve this, we introduce a Differentiable Morphological Modeling framework, which embeds explicit physical and geometric priors into a differentiable synthesis engine. Unlike deep learning generative models, th

Multi-Modal Feature Fusion and Hierarchical Classification for Automated Equine-Human Interaction Behavior Recognition.

Automated recognition of equine-human interaction behaviors from video represents a significant challenge in computational ethology, with critical applications spanning animal welfare assessment, equine-assisted services evaluation, and safety monitoring in equestrian environments. Existing approaches to animal behavior recognition typically focus on single species in isolation, rely solely on facial expression analysis while ignoring full-body posture, or employ flat classification architectures that fail under the severe class imbalances characteristic of naturalistic behavioral datasets. Stringology-based motif discovery for electrophysiological time series: A framework for temporal pattern analysis with an ADHD case study.

Recurrent temporal patterns in time series data encode functionally meaningful structure, yet most existing analytical frameworks summarize sequential data through global statistics, i.e., spectral power, entropy indices, or averaged waveforms, without identifying the specific patterns underlying these summaries. We introduce a computational framework that adapts two algorithmic paradigms from stringology, the study of efficient string processing and pattern matching, to the systematic discovery and characterization of temporal motifs in numerical time series. Specifically, order preserving ma

Myoelectric Temporal Patching: Future Prosthetics Shall Effectively Leverage sEMG Temporal Patterns.

Robust myoelectric control is essential for advancing lower limbs active assistive devices and prosthetics. Feature extraction from surface Electromyographic (sEMG) signals serves as a fundamental component influencing the performance of such controllers. While deep learning models, such as Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks, have been increasingly used to extract hidden features from raw sEMG data by leveraging temporal contexts in laboratory studies, the use of such models on prosthetic controllers is often associated with large memory and computational overheads, thus necessitating expe

Myoelectric and Inertial Data Fusion Through a Novel Attention-Based Spatiotemporal Feature Extraction for Transhumeral Prosthetic Control: An Offline Analysis.

This study proposes a feature extraction scheme that fuses accelerometric (ACC) and electromyographic (EMG) data to improve shoulder movement identification in individuals with transhumeral amputation, in whom the clinical need for intuitive control strategies enabling reliable activation of full-arm prostheses is underinvestigated. A novel spatiotemporal warping feature extraction architecture was employed to realize EMG and ACC information fusion at the feature level. EMG and ACC data were collected from six participants with intact limbs and four participants with transhumeral amputation us

Towards resolving the co-existing impacts of multiple dynamic factors on the performance of EMG-pattern recognition based prostheses.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Mobility of subject (MoS) and muscle contraction force variation (MCFV) have been shown to individually degrade the performance of multiple degrees of freedom electromyogram (EMG) pattern recognition (PR) based prostheses control systems. Though these factors (MoS-MCFV) co-exist simultaneously in the practical use of the prosthesis, their combined impact on PR-based system has rarely been studied especially in the context of amputees who are the target users of the device. METHODS: To address this problem, this study systematically investigated the co-existing impact

Automatic classification of tissue malignancy for breast carcinoma diagnosis.

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women. Its early diagnosis is extremely important to prevent avoidable deaths. However, malignancy assessment of tissue biopsies is complex and dependent on observer subjectivity. Moreover, hematoxylin and eosin (H&E)-stained histological images exhibit a highly variable appearance, even within the same malignancy level. In this paper, we propose a computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) tool for automated malignancy assessment of breast tissue samples based on the processing of histological images. We provide four malignancy levels as the

Automatic Detection of Tuberculosis in Chest Radiographs Using a Combination of Textural, Focal, and Shape Abnormality Analysis.

Tuberculosis (TB) is a common disease with high mortality and morbidity rates worldwide. Automatic systems to detect TB on chest radiographs (CXRs) can improve the efficiency of diagnostic algorithms for pulmonary TB. The diverse manifestation of TB on CXRs from different populations requires a system that can be adapted to deal with different types of abnormalities. A computer aided detection (CAD) system was developed which combines several subscores of supervised subsystems detecting textural, shape, and focal abnormalities into one TB score. A general framework was developed to combine an

Identifying Similar Cases in Document Networks Using Cross-Reference Structures.

Our objective was to explore the creation of document networks based on different thresholds of shared information and different clustering algorithms on those networks to identify document clusters describing similar clinical cases. We created networks from vaccine adverse event report sets using seven approaches for linking reports. We then applied three clustering algorithms [visualization of similarities (VOS), Louvain, k-means] to these networks and evaluated their ability to identify known clusters. The report sets included one simulated set and three sets from the Vaccine Adverse Event

Rapid Golgi analysis method for efficient and unbiased classification of dendritic spines.

Dendritic spines are the primary recipients of excitatory synaptic input in the brain. Spine morphology provides important information on the functional state of ongoing synaptic transmission. One of the most commonly used methods to visualize spines is Golgi-Cox staining, which is appealing both due to ease of sample preparation and wide applicability to multiple species including humans. However, the classification of spines is a time-consuming and often expensive task that yields widely varying results between individuals. Here, we present a novel approach to this analysis technique that us
