The effects of hippocampal dentate gyrus lesions on categorical face perception.

Traditionally considered a memory structure, the hippocampus may contribute to visual perception in fundamental ways. Recent evidence suggests that the ability to differentiate highly confusable unfamiliar faces could involve pattern separation, a mnemonic process mediated by the hippocampal dentate gyrus. Hippocampal involvement, however, may be influenced by existing face memories. We tested BL, an individual with rare selective bilateral dentate gyrus lesions accompanied by compromised pattern separation, and 34 control participants to investigate these possibilities. Participants were admi

Dynamic context-based updating of object representations in the visual cortex.

Objects in real-world scenes are often poorly or partially visible, for example because they are occluded or appear in the periphery. An additional challenge of real-world vision is that it is dynamic, causing the appearance of objects (e.g., their size and orientation) to change as we move. Notably, however, these changes are predictable from the three-dimensional structure of the surrounding scene. In two functional magnetic resonance imaging studies, we find that the visual cortex dynamically updates object representations using this predictive contextual information. First, visual cortical

Neuronal tuning aligns dynamically with object and texture manifolds across the visual hierarchy.

Visual neurons respond to a vast range of images, from textures to objects, but the rules linking these responses remain unclear. Although tuning to simple features is well established in the primary visual cortex, this framework breaks down in higher areas, where neurons encode diverse and unpredictable features. To ask what features neurons prioritize, we used generative models (deep networks that synthesize new images from a learned latent space), allowing neurons in V1, V4 and the posterior inferotemporal cortex (PIT) to guide image synthesis through closed-loop optimization. We compared m

Representation of symmetry in the extrastriate visual cortex from temporal integration of parts: An EEG/ERP study.

When symmetry is present in the retinal image, a symmetry-sensitive network in the extrastriate visual areas activates, and response magnitude scales with degree of regularity. Is this activation driven by the regularity in the image, or can the network recover regularity of an object? We investigated whether the network responds to bilateral symmetry for dynamically occluded shapes, and thus responds to symmetry in the object. The stimulus was an irregular shape partly occluded by a rectangle. After 500 ms, the rectangle was displaced to the other side, occluding the previously visible half,

Attentional gating in primary visual cortex: a physiological basis for dyslexia.

The visual magnocellular pathway is known to play a central part in visuospatial attention and in directing attention to specific parts of the visual world in serial search. It is proposed that, in the case of reading, this mechanism is trained to perform a sequential gating of visual information coming into the primary visual cortex to enable further orderly processing by the ventral stream. This scheme, taken together with the potential for plasticity between the different afferent channels in the case of a relative impairment of the magnocellular system, can provide some limited rationale f

Words and hemifields: do the hemispheres enjoy equal opportunity?

A common technique in research into cerebral asymmetry in both normal and clinical populations involves the use of lateralized visual displays. The validity of this approach depends on several generally implicit assumptions about the character of the cognitive processes involved. For example, when words are used as stimuli, cognitive processing is assumed to involve either "whole-word" or "ends-in" analysis. In this way, both hemispheres are assumed to have equal opportunities to recognize the word. These assumptions are critical, because if they are wrong, explanations based on established pe

Visual Sensitivities in Toddlers' Hands Provide a Foundation for Shape Perception.

Human competencies in object recognition and category generalization implicate representations of the 3D geometry of objects. There is no accepted account of how such object-centric representations are formed. Toddlers' manual and visual exploration of objects is strongly associated with their emerging abilities in object recognition and category generalization, although there is limited understanding of the processes that underlie this association. Building on Marr and Nishihara's seminal theory of shape, we proposed (1) that toddlers actively select views that optimize fundamental visual sen

Beyond visual integration: sensitivity of the temporal-parietal junction for objects, places, and faces.

One important role of the TPJ is the contribution to perception of the global gist in hierarchically organized stimuli where individual elements create a global visual percept. However, the link between clinical findings in simultanagnosia and neuroimaging in healthy subjects is missing for real-world global stimuli, like visual scenes. It is well-known that hierarchical, global stimuli activate TPJ regions and that simultanagnosia patients show deficits during the recognition of hierarchical stimuli and real-world visual scenes. However, the role of the TPJ in real-world scene processing is e

From word superiority to word inferiority: visual processing of letters and words in pure alexia.

Visual processing and naming of individual letters and short words were investigated in four patients with pure alexia. To test processing at different levels, the same stimuli were studied across a naming task and a visual perception task. The normal word superiority effect was eliminated in both tasks for all patients, and this pattern was more pronounced in the more severely affected patients. The relationship between performance with single letters and words was, however, not straightforward: One patient performed within the normal range on the letter perception task, while being severely

Neural oscillations and top-down connectivity are modulated by object-scene congruency.

The knowledge we have about how the world is structured is known to influence object recognition. One way this is demonstrated is through a congruency effect, where object recognition is faster and more accurate if items are presented in expected scene contexts. However, our understanding of the dynamic neural mechanisms that underlie congruency effects are under-explored. Using magnetoencephalography (MEG), we examine how the congruency between an object and a prior scene results in changes in the oscillatory activity in the brain, which regions underpin this effect, and whether congruency re

The veil of distraction: Mind-wandering and memorability jointly shape visual recognition and recall.

The shift of attention from external stimuli toward task-unrelated thoughts (TUTs), or mind-wandering, has been shown to disrupt encoding and subsequent retrieval of information. The present study examined how TUT during encoding affects memory for visual scenes that vary in memorability, an intrinsic stimulus property reflecting the likelihood of recognition across individuals. In Experiment 1, participants studied images of high or low memorability while intermittently reporting their attentional state. A subsequent recognition test revealed independent effects of mind-wandering and memorabi

Does exposure within an experiment affect the influence of familiar parts versus wholes on figure assignment?

Recurring questions in visual perception concern the role of experience and the relationship between parts and wholes. We investigated these questions in an experiment in which observers reported where they perceived a figure relative to a central border in bipartite displays in which the region on one side depicted either: (1) an identifiable configuration of a familiar basic-level object in its typical upright orientation (a "whole" familiar configuration); (2) an inverted version of (1); (3) a part rearranged (PR) version of (1) comprising the same parts as the upright familiar configuratio

Preserved Expert Object Recognition in a Case of Visual Hemiagnosia.

We examined a stroke patient (HWS) with a unilateral lesion of the right medial ventral visual stream, involving the right fusiform and parahippocampal gyri. In a number of object recognition tests with lateralized presentations of target stimuli, HWS showed significant symptoms of hemiagnosia with contralesional recognition deficits for everyday objects. We further explored the patient's capacities of visual expertise that were acquired before the current perceptual impairment became effective. We confronted him with objects he was an expert for already before stroke onset and compared this p

Three-Dimensional Face Recognition in Mild Cognitive Impairment: A Psychophysical and Structural MR Study.

OBJECTIVES: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) has been associated with a high risk of conversion to Alzheimer's dementia. In addition to memory complaints, impairments in the visuospatial domain have been reported in this condition. We have previously shown that deficits in perceiving structure-from-motion (SFM) objects are reflected in functional reorganization of brain activity within the visual ventral stream. Here we aimed to identify structural correlates of psychophysical complex face and object recognition performance in amnestic MCI patients (n=30 vs. n=25 controls). This study was, ther

A reappraisal of person recognition and identification.

In the last years an increasing number of cases (Gainotti et al., 2008, this issue) have been reported in whom difficulty to recognise and identify familiar people occurs in everyday multimodal settings, differently from unimodal face-specific impairments (i.e., prosopagnosia). A reappraisal of current person processing models is presented in order to account for such deficits as well as for the common slips of recognition occurring in healthy subjects. The model we propose is based upon three main modifications of current models, namely: (1) the role of PINs as stores of multimodal perceptual

Predicting errors before they occur using trial-by-trial dynamics of pre-error and post-error behavior.

Errors rarely occur in isolation, but rather within behavioral sequences and are known to shape subsequent behavior. However, understanding the full time course of the impact of errors has been challenging given data limitations. Here, to gain key insights, two groups of precisely matched participants (n > 35,000) were compared; those who made versus did not make an error in a short object discrimination task. Linear mixed-effects models revealed error-induced effects both preceding and following errors. First, the error group showed pre-error speeding up to eight trials before the error occur

HVPNet: A bio-inspired network for general salient and camouflaged object detection.

In recent years, most research on multimodal salient object detection (SOD) and camouflaged object detection (COD) typically aims to improve performance through complex cross-modal feature fusion and decoding structures. However, this approach leads to an excessively large model parameter scale and often fails to deliver satisfactory detection performance due to structural redundancy. In contrast, the human visual process is able to efficiently perform salient and camouflaged object identification without such complex structures. This contrast raises an important question: Can we draw conceptu

Symbol grounding of number words in the subitization range.

In three experiments, we explored whether number words are grounded in a nonsymbolic representation of numerosity. We used a sentence-picture verification task, where participants are required to check whether the concept given in a sentence corresponds to the subsequently presented object. We concurrently manipulated numerical congruency by orthogonally varying the number word attached to the concept and the quantity of objects. The number words and numerosities varied from one to four in Experiment 1 and from six to nine in Experiment 2. In Experiment 3, we employed number words six and eigh

Action and perception in literacy: A common-code for spelling and reading.

There is strong evidence that reading and spelling in alphabetical scripts depend on a shared representation (common-coding). However, computational models usually treat the two skills separately, producing a wide variety of proposals as to how the identity and position of letters is represented. This article treats reading and spelling in terms of the common-coding hypothesis for perception-action coupling. Empirical evidence for common representations in spelling-reading is reviewed. A novel version of the Start-End Competitive Queuing (SE-CQ) spelling model is introduced, and tested against

The remarkable inefficiency of word recognition.

Do we recognize common objects by parts, or as wholes? Holistic recognition would be efficient, yet people detect a grating of light and dark stripes by parts. Thus efficiency falls as the number of stripes increases, in inverse proportion, as explained by probability summation among independent feature detectors. It is inefficient to detect correlated components independently. But gratings are uncommon artificial stimuli that may fail to tap the full power of visual object recognition. Familiar objects become special as people become expert at judging them, possibly because the processing bec
