Reasons for not participating in scleroderma patient support groups: a comparison of results from the North American and European scleroderma support group surveys.

PURPOSE: Many people with scleroderma rely on peer-led support groups as a coping resource. Reasons for not attending support groups in scleroderma have been investigated only in North American participants. This study assesses reasons for nonattendance in European countries and compares results with previously published North American findings. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The same 21-item survey as used in the North American sample assessed possible reasons for not attending scleroderma support groups. Proportions of items rated Important or Very Important were compared between samples. RESULTS:

Sustainability & social segmentation in social media contagion: A mathematical and computational study on dual effects of individual needs & peer influence.

Addiction to internet-based social media has increasingly emerged as a critical social problem, especially among young adults and teenagers. Based on multiple research studies, excessive usage of social media may have detrimental psychological and physical impacts. In this study, we are going to explore mathematically the dynamics of social media addiction behavior and explore the determinants of compulsive use of social media from the dual perspectives of individual needs or cravings and peer-related factors or peer pressure. The theoretical analysis of the model without the peer pressure eff

Peer Influence and Use of Electronic Cigarettes among Adolescents and Young Adults: A Meta-Analysis of Prospective Studies.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between peer use and individual use of EC among adolescents and young adults. METHODS: We performed the search strategy on PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane. We selected prospective studies reporting adjusted odds ratio (aOR)/relative risk (aRR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI) and conducted a random-effects meta-analysis. RESULT: Eleven prospective studies were included, involving 32,014 participants in the quantitative analysis. Meta-analysis results showed a significant association between EC use by friends and increased odds of individual EC use (aOR =

A Longitudinal Examination of Children's Friendships Across Racial Status and Gender and Their Intergroup Prosocial Behavior.

In this research, we examined (a) the primary effects of intergroup friendships: whether having a friend of a different gender/racial status benefits children's gender/racial status-based prosocial behavior and (b) the secondary transfer of intergroup friendships: whether friendships from one domain (e.g., gender) would extend to improved prosocial behavior toward outgroup members of another domain (e.g., race). Participants were 603 third- to fifth-grade students (Mage = 9.06, SD = .90; 47.9% girls; 52.4% racially minoritized). Peer nominations of prosocial behavior and friendships were colle

Evolutionary dynamics in state-feedback public goods games with peer punishment.

Public goods game serves as a valuable paradigm for studying the challenges of collective cooperation in human and natural societies. Peer punishment is often considered an effective incentive for promoting cooperation in such contexts. However, previous related studies have mostly ignored the positive feedback effect of collective contributions on individual payoffs. In this work, we explore global and local state-feedback, where the multiplication factor is positively correlated with the frequency of contributors in the entire population or within the game group, respectively. By using repli

Networks of support: Microboards for children with intellectual disability.

Friendships are an important aspect of social inclusion and can have a positive influence on a child's social and emotional wellbeing beyond childhood. A Microboard is a formal approach to building supportive relationships for people with intellectual disability. Establishing a Microboard during childhood may facilitate a peer support network that endures into adulthood. However, there is limited empirical research exploring the role and design of Microboards in the lives of children with intellectual disability and therefore further research is needed.

Discipline and punishment in panoptical public goods games.

In Public Goods Games (PGG), the temptation to free-ride on others' contributions poses a significant threat to the sustainability of cooperative societies. Therefore, societies strive to mitigate this through incentive systems, employing rewards and punishments to foster cooperative behavior. Thus, peer punishment, in which cooperators sanction defectors, as well as pool punishment, where a centralized punishment institution executes the punishment, is deeply analyzed in previous works. Although the literature indicates that these methods may enhance cooperation on social dilemmas under parti

Meta-analysis of the relationship between bullying and depressive symptoms in children and adolescents.

Childhood and adolescence are critical periods for physical and mental development; thus, they are high-risk periods for the occurrence of mental disorders. The purpose of this study was to systematically evaluate the association between bullying and depressive symptoms in children and adolescents. We searched the PubMed, MEDLINE and other databases to identify studies related to bullying behavior and depressive symptoms in children and adolescents. A total of 31 studies were included, with a total sample size of 133,688 people. The results of the meta-analysis showed that the risk of depressi

Peer and parent influences on youth skateboarding and factors that affect their decision to return to the sport after injury.

Skateboarding is an increasingly popular sport among youth, despite the fact that they are a high-risk group for injuries during this activity. The purpose of this study was twofold: to explore youths' perceptions about the influences that peers and parents have on their skateboarding; and to identify factors that affect their decisions about returning to the sport after injury. Virtual semi-structured interviews were conducted with 26 youth, 14-17 years of age, who had experienced a medically-treated injury while skateboarding during the past year. Applying thematic analyses, major findings i

An online survey to understand the needs of caregivers of family members with 22q11 deletion syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Most individuals with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS) have multi-system and lifelong needs requiring substantial support. Their primary caregivers are usually family members who dedicate lifelong time and effort to their role. The pressures of their roles can negatively impact caregivers' psychosocial well-being, suggesting a need for additional support for this community who currently have no specialised interventions available. METHOD: This online study surveyed 103 caregivers of family members with 22q11DS to determine the barriers to accessing support that they faced, the

The effect of non-punitive peer comparison and performance feedback on drivers' behavior using the telematics: The first randomized trial in Iran.

BACKGROUND: Aggressive driving is the leading behavior resulting in fatal or nonfatal disabling injuries. Therefore, programs with the main focus on driving behavior could reduce the risk of traffic injuries remarkably. We aimed to investigate the role of non-punitive performance feedback on drivers' behavior and evaluate the persistence of the altered behavior by using in-vehicle telematics. METHODS: This study was done as a randomized controlled trial by repeated-measures design to evaluate the non-punitive behavioral intervention's efficacy on the behavioral transition to safer driving for

Anxiety in Attachment and Sexual Relationships in Adolescence: A Moderated Mediation Model.

Adolescence is characterized by several transformations, such as identity construction, progressive estrangement from parents, relational interest in peers, and body changes that also involve sexuality issues. In this process, attachment patterns play a fundamental role in relationships, and when these are dysfunctional, they can result in internalizing and externalizing problems. Often, females show their relational difficulties through internalizing expressions and males through externalizing expressions. Additionally, given the sexual progress involved in this life moment, psychological sym

Academic help-seeking interactions in the classroom: A microlongitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Help-seeking research has traditionally inferred behavioural responses to the need for help from post-hoc reflections and experiments outside of the classroom context. AIM: We aimed to gain an ecologically valid understanding of the help-seeking process by examining the association between pupils' task-specific perceptions and their help-seeking interactions with teachers and peers during lessons. SAMPLE: Participants were 290 pupils in Years 4-6 (aged 8.22-11.48) and 12 teachers in 12 classrooms in three schools across two local authorities in South East England, UK. METHOD: Th

Wellbeing in Secondary Education (WISE) Study to Improve the Mental Health and Wellbeing of Teachers: A Complex System Approach to Understanding Intervention Acceptability.

Teaching staff report poorer mental health and wellbeing than the general working population. Intervention to address this issue is imperative, as poor wellbeing is associated with burnout, presenteeism, and adverse student mental health outcomes. The Wellbeing in Secondary Education (WISE) intervention is a secondary school-based programme aimed at improving the mental health and wellbeing of teachers and students. There are three components: awareness-raising for staff; a peer support service delivered by staff trained in Mental Health First Aid (MHFA); and Schools and Colleges Mental Health

'Progression capitals': How homeless health peer advocacy impacts peer advocates.

This article presents analysis from a qualitative evaluation of a homeless health peer advocacy (HHPA) service in London, United Kingdom. Whilst evidence is growing for the impact of peer programming on clients, understanding of the impact on peers themselves is limited in the context of homelessness. Research here is vital for supporting sustainable and effective programmes. Analysis of interview data with 14 current and former peer advocates, 2 members of staff and 3 external stakeholders suggests peer advocacy and its organizational setting can generate social, human, cultural and physical

From resistance to acceptance in small group work: Students' narratives.

BACKGROUND: Small group work helps the development of students' collaborative attributes and their knowledge enhancement. However, teachers may face challenges when they have students who resist group work. Possible reasons of their resistance may have been generally discussed but rigorous study of this specific student population is often overlooked. OBJECTIVES: To compare the perspectives of small group learning among students who resisted group work before and after group learning. DESIGN: Students' narratives were collected before and after group work. A structured intervention consisted

Resilience in deaf children: A comprehensive literature review and applications for school staff.

Resilience is a dynamic, multidimensional complex concept that implies risk and protective factors, adaptation, and success. Communication and language are often identified as barriers in deaf children's development. However, research linking deafness in childhood and resilience is scarce. The present comprehensive literature review aims to verify which are the predominant risk factors for this group, which protective factors may be identified and if significant differences have been found between deaf and hearing children regarding resilience. A systematic search, performed in seven databases

Analysis of Bystander Behavior Towards Intimate Partner Violence via Peerformance.

This study of a South Asian community in the midwestern USA examines what bystanders do when they witness an incident of intimate partner violence (IPV). Because of ethical and safety constraints, in lieu of observation in a natural setting, data were collected at a Peerformance, a peer-led IPV prevention program, using the forum theatre method introduced in Augusto Boal's Theatre of the Oppressed. Event attendees were invited to respond to an IPV incident enacted by peer educators in which a controlling husband's behavior escalates to the point of suggesting physical violence. Using a grounde
