The role of peer relationships in parental bereavement during childhood and adolescence.

This article reviews current knowledge concerning the relationship between peer support and adjustment outcomes and experiences for parentally bereaved children. A brief overview of the effects of parental bereavement and factors influencing immediate and long-term adjustment is provided, followed by an overview of peer-provided social support and its relationship to adjustment. Current findings on the predictive value of peer support for adjustment are then discussed, with emphasis on the reciprocal positive and negative influences that peer support and adjustment (or lack thereof) exert. Peer-to-Peer Case Review as a Strategy to Improve Sepsis Education in Graduate Medical Education.

INTRODUCTION: We conducted an educational intervention using a peer-to-peer case review process to improve emergency medicine (EM) resident sepsis knowledge and diagnostic confidence. Local quality audits in our academic emergency department (ED) identified poor compliance in addressing adult cases of severe sepsis and septic shock, suggesting an educational gap. We evaluated whether a facilitated, peer-to-peer case review process improved EM resident sepsis knowledge and diagnostic confidence. METHODS: We conducted a single-site, pre-test/post-test educational QI evaluation among senior EM r

Experiences of peer work in drug use service settings: A systematic review of qualitative evidence.

BACKGROUND: People with lived or living experiences of drug use and services have been increasingly incorporated into nonpeer-led mainstream organizational settings as a unique workforce. Despite the much discussed effectiveness of peer services in achieving measurable outcomes, limited attention has been given to the experiential aspects of peer work from the perspectives of peers, clients, or others involved. This systematic review synthesized qualitative evidence examining the experiences of peer work in nonpeer-led drug use service settings. It focused on the benefits of incorporating peer

Harnessing peer mentorship as a tool to turn human resource for health brain drain into brain gain: a case study of a Nigerian peer-mentored research group.

BACKGROUND: Peer mentorship can be a potential tool to reduce the disparities in health research capacity between high- and low- and middle-income countries. This case study describes the potential of peer mentorship to tackle two critical issues: bridging health research capacity of doctors from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and the transformation of human resource for health brain drain into "brain gain". CASE PRESENTATION: In 2021, a virtual peer mentorship group was established by 16 alumni of the University of Benin College of Medical Sciences' 2008 graduating class, residing

Emotional Peer Support Interventions for Students With SEND: A Systematic Review.

Emotional peer support systems have benefits for student-student relationships and allow for children and adolescents' participation in schools. For students with specific educational needs and disabilities (SEND), positive relationships seem to be more difficult to attain and these students are more vulnerable to suffer negative peer experiences such as bullying and social exclusion. Systems in which peers can show helpful behavior are beneficial for schools in order to create a positive, supportive climate. Emotional peer support entails social interaction through emotional or practical help

The orthopaedic surgeon's responsibility: Creating and protecting scientific evidence as its custodian.

Progress in surgery has never been driven by technical innovation alone. Advancing patient care extends far beyond the operating room, relying on the research and academic engagement of orthopaedic surgeons. Every improvement in surgical practice, from refined indications to optimised rehabilitation protocols, has been built on rigorous research and critical evaluation of evidence. Among academic activities, peer review is perhaps one of the most undervalued. It is time-consuming, often performed after long clinical hours, and offers little personal recognition. Yet, it remains the cornerstone

A salutogenic approach to aspects facilitating female immigrants' establishment in working life: an integrative literature review.

BACKGROUND: Studies show that female immigrants tend to struggle to establish themselves in the working life in a new society. Since previous research has primarily focused on barriers to integration, there is a need for more studies that encompass aspects that make integration toward employment possible for women. PURPOSE: This integrative literature review aimed to explore peer-reviewed research on facilitating aspects for immigrant women in their process of integrating into working life. METHODS: An integrative literature review yielded 15 peer-reviewed articles published between 2010 and

Online Peer-to-Peer Support for Young People With Mental Health Problems: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence and early adulthood are critical periods for the development of mental disorders. Online peer-to-peer communication is popular among young people and may improve mental health by providing social support. Previous systematic reviews have targeted Internet support groups for adults with mental health problems, including depression. However, there have been no systematic reviews examining the effectiveness of online peer-to-peer support in improving the mental health of adolescents and young adults. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this review was to systematically identify availab

Peer Cybervictimization Among Adolescents and the Associated Internalizing and Externalizing Problems: A Meta-Analysis.

Numerous adolescents in the United States experience peer cybervictimization, which is associated with a series of internalizing (e.g., depression, anxiety, anger) and externalizing (e.g., aggression, substance use, risky sexual behavior) problems. The current study provides a systematic review and meta-analysis of existing research on these relationships. Included in the meta-analyses are 239 effect sizes from 55 reports, representing responses from 257,678 adolescents. The results of a series of random effects meta-analyses using robust variance estimation indicated positive and significant

Peer-Mediated Interventions for Students with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities: A Systematic Review of Reviews of Social and Behavioral Outcomes.

Peer-mediated interventions (PMIs) have been firmly established as evidence-based approaches for facilitating peer relationships among students with and without disabilities. We conducted a review of reviews evaluating PMI studies to support social skills and positive behavioral outcomes for children, adolescents, and young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). A total of 4,254 individuals with IDD were participants across 43 reviews of the literature, reflecting 357 unique studies. This review includes coding related to participant demographic information, interventio

Peer-education strategies for enhancing sexual health services among female sex workers: a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Female sex workers (FSWs) remain highly vulnerable to HIV, other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and broader sexual and reproductive health challenges. Peer-led interventions are widely recommended, yet their specific contributions and implementation gaps are poorly synthesised. This scoping review mapped peer-education strategies used globally to promote sexual health among FSWs, with emphasis on intervention components, outcomes, and evidence gaps, including the role of peers. METHODS: This scoping review followed the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) manual and Arksey and

RATIONALE: Children with neurodevelopmental disorders such as attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism, developmental language disorder (DLD), intellectual disability (ID), and social (pragmatic) communication disorder (SPCD) experience difficulties with social functioning due to differences in their social, emotional and cognitive skills. Previous systematic reviews have focussed on specific aspects of social functioning rather than broader peer functioning and friendships. Systematic review of social network analysis in adolescent cigarette smoking behavior.

BACKGROUND: Social networks are important in adolescent smoking behavior. Previous research indicates that peer context is a major causal factor of adolescent smoking behavior. To date, however, little is known about the influence of peer group structure on adolescent smoking behavior. METHODS: Studies that examined adolescent social networks with regard to their cigarette smoking behavior were identified through online and manual literature searches. Ten social network analysis studies involving a total of 28,263 adolescents were included in the final review. RESULTS: Of the 10 reviewed stu

Standardization and adaptability for dissemination of telephone peer support for high-risk groups: general evaluation and lessons learned.

Beyond demonstrated effectiveness, research needs to identify how peer support can be implemented in real-world settings. Telephone peer support offers one approach to this. The purpose of this study is to evaluate telephone peer support provided by trained peer staff for high-risk groups, implemented according to key tasks or functions of the Reciprocal Peer Support model (RPS) providing both standardization and adaptability. The methods used in the study include the review of contact data for years 2015-2016 from telephone peer support services of Rutgers Health University Behavioral Health

Peer- and community-led responses to HIV: A scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: In June 2021, United Nations (UN) Member States committed to ambitious targets for scaling up community-led responses by 2025 toward meeting the goals of ending the AIDS epidemic by 2030. These targets build on UN Member States 2016 commitments to ensure that 30% of HIV testing and treatment programmes are community-led by 2030. At its current pace, the world is not likely to meet these nor other global HIV targets, as evidenced by current epidemiologic trends. The COVID-19 pandemic threatens to further slow momentum made to date. The purpose of this paper is to review available
