A regional audit of the investigation and treatment of colorectal and pelvic floor disorders (1984-1991).

The activities of a regional physiology unit established for the investigation of colorectal and pelvic floor physiology in health and disease in a clinically relevant setting has been audited and its evolution described over a period of eight years. Trends in surgical treatment of some of these disorders over the same period have also been documented in the Lothian Region. Although there has been little change in the number of patients investigated annually patterns of investigation appear to change. Sphincter manometry, proctometrography and somatosensory reflex measurements have remained th

Sexual Function in Pelvic Floor Disorders: A Pilot Study on the Feasibility of Routine Assessment.

Background/Objectives: Pelvic floor disorders (PFDs), which include pelvic organ prolapse and urinary incontinence, are common conditions that often affect sexual health, but remain under-assessed within routine care. The following cases are presented to demonstrate the potential of a brief sexual health questionnaire in pelvic floor clinics and to explore how sexual function varies across common PFD phenotypes. Methods: A pilot case series was conducted with a group of five sexually active women diagnosed with PFDs at the Materno-Infantil University Hospital in Gran Canaria, Spain, between Ja

Translabial ultrasound in the assessment of pelvic floor and anorectal function in women with defecatory disorders.

This article shows how modern ultrasound imaging can contribute to the investigation of patients with posterior vaginal wall prolapse, obstructed defecation, fecal incontinence and rectal intussusception/prolapse, conditions that should be similarly relevant and of interest to colorectal surgeons, gastroenterologists and gynecologists. Translabial/perineal ultrasound, a simple, universally available technique, may serve as a first-line diagnostic tool in women with posterior compartment prolapse and/or symptoms of obstructed defecation, largely replacing defecation proctography and magnetic re

Defecography used as a screening entry for identifying evacuatory pelvic floor disorders in childhood constipation.

Defecography is one of the most valuable methods for the evaluation of pelvic floor disorders. Interest in this technique has rapidly expanded owing to its increased understanding of the multifactorial pathophysiology involving evacuation disorders. The value of defecography has reached a consensus in adulthood but is still limited in childhood. In this study, defecography was carried out in 8 volunteers and 96 constipation children. The results revealed that defecography can help to identify evacuatory pelvic floor disorders in childhood constipation. It is safe and feasible and should be use
