Inhalation of 60Co3O4 particles may occur at the work place in nuclear industry. Their low solubility may result in chronic lung exposure to γ rays. Our strategy for an improved therapeutic approach is to enhance particle dissolution to facilitate cobalt excretion, as the dissolved fraction is rapidly eliminated, mainly in urine. In induced bleeding experiments on dogs, 99mTc-sulfur colloid was a suitable agent for detecting the bleeding site in the small intestine, providing that the site was distant from the liver and spleen. Bleeding sites were detectable at rates as low as 0.1 ml/min. When induced in the sigmoid or descending colon, the site was demonstrated by scintigraphy with 99mTc-sulfur colloid. Unsatisfactory images were obtained in the esophagus and stomach, however, when 131I-ortho-iodohippurate or 99mTc-DTPA was used.

This study represents a first comprehensive investigation on how the decorporation agents CaNa3-DTPA (DTPA) and 3,4,3-LI(1,2-HOPO) (LIHOPO) affect EuIII interactions with human and rat kidney cells in vitro. A multimeric MRI blood pool contrast agent based on the closo-borane motif is reported. Twelve copies of an amphiphilic DTPA chelate with amine end groups are appended on carbonate-functionalized closo-borane motif using carbamate linkages. The presence of peripheral phenyl groups on the modified DTPA chelates results in high human serum albumin binding, high relaxivity, and excellent contrast enhancement in vitro and in vivo.

BACKGROUND: Chelating agents such as diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (DTPA) can be used as a decorporation drug in the zinc (Zn) form to treat internal radioactive contamination after exposure to plutonium or americium in a nuclear accident. Although Zn-DTPA is normally administered intravenously, inhalation of Zn-DTPA in aerosol form is a better route for direct delivery to the lungs. We report a one-step passive microfluidic technique to generate arrays of moving droplets containing variation of chemical concentration between individual drops. We find that a concentration gradient can be established in a long diluting plug by on-chip dilution and extraction of samples via orthogonal coalescence of the plug with a static array of sample drops.
