This study evaluated insulin sensitivity and serum pepsinogen in dairy cows from herds with high and low risk for displaced abomasum (DA) across different lactation stages. Blood samples and body condition scores (BCS) were collected from 235 clinically healthy cows on five farms in Hokkaido, Japan, including two high-DA farms (≥4%) and three DA-free farms. Cows from high-DA farms consistently exhibited lower values of the revised quantitative insulin sensitivity check index and quantitative insulin sensitivity check index, along with higher values of homeostatic model assessment, indicating r

Gastric cancer (GC) remains a significant concern worldwide, with a very high incidence in Japan, South Korea, and China. Early diagnosis of GC is important for reducing its mortality; to achieve this, screening of individuals at a high risk for developing GC should include frequent esophagogastroduodenoscopy. Currently, various population-based GC screening strategies are being implemented in South Korea, Japan, and the Matsu region of Taiwan. Many studies have suggested that serum pepsinogens (sPGs) can be used as GC biomarkers in South Korea, China, Europe, and other countries; indeed, Japa

BACKGROUND: Serum pepsinogen (sPG) levels have been established as a good marker of chronic atrophic gastritis and the sequential occurrence of gastric cancer. However, there have been few prospective investigations which investigated the predictive performance of sPG for future gastric cancer incidence.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We prospectively followed-up a total of 2446 community-dwelling Japanese aged ≥ 40 years for 10 years and used the Youden's index to determine the cutoff values of the pepsinogen I level and pepsinogen I/II ratio to accurately discriminate gastric cancer events. Predicti

We sought to study the relationship between serum pepsinogens and different histopathologic features of Helicobacter pylori-related chronic gastritis. One hundred forty-nine consecutive dyspeptic patients underwent endoscopy with biopsies; serum pepsinogens I and II were measured by immunoassay. Serum levels of pepsinogens (sPG) were significantly correlated with H. pylori density both of the corpus (sPGI: r = 0.32, P < .001; sPGII: r = 0.56, P < .001) and antrum (sPGI: r = 0.41, P < .001; sPGII: r = 0.43, P < .001) as well as with chronic inflammation (sPGI: r = 0.26, P < .001; sPGII: r = 0.4

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis induced by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have very complex effects on the gastric mucosa. They, for instance, inhibit mucosal cell proliferation in gastric ulcer patients. The aim of this study was to investigate whether these effects manifest as changes in pepsinogen I and gastrin concentrations.
METHODOLOGY: Fasting serum pepsinogen I and gastrin samples were collected from 53 consecutive Helicobacter pylori (HP) positive peptic ulcer patients. Ulcer was diagnosed by endoscopy. The presence of HP was determined from

Duodenal ulcer is a multifactorial entity where a genetic predisposition and extrinsic elements seem to concur in its origin. A series of genetic and extrinsic markers were determined in 50 patients with duodenal ulcer and 50 controls matched by age, sex and socioeconomical status. HLA antigens dit not have significant differences. Blood group O Rh+ was predominant (p < 0.01). Secretor status of antigen HBO in saliva was positive in 70% of patients (p < 0.001). Serum Pepsinogen I was increased in 85% of cases (p < 0.001). Immunoglobulin G anti H. pylori was positive in 62% of ulcerous (p < 0.0

In order to investigate the clinical usefulness of human pepsinogen I (PGI) as a noninvasive diagnostic tool for gastric lesions, 92 healthy volunteers, 87 patients with a gastric ulcer and 94 patients with gastric carcinoma, verified by histologic examinations, were enrolled. The serum level of PGI in each patient was measured by radioimmunoassay. Mean serum PGI levels were 95.4 +/- 39.4 ng/mL in patients with gastric ulcers, 77.6 +/- 29.3 ng/mL in healthy volunteers, and 52.1 +/- 26.5 ng/mL in patients with gastric carcinoma. Statistically significant differences (p < 0.01) existed between t

BACKGROUND: Motilin and erythromycin bind the same receptor in the gastrointestinal muscle cells. Motilin stimulates pepsinogen secretion in humans and dogs. However, it is unclear whether it acts directly on gastric chief cells or via other neurotransmitters.
METHODS: Isolated gastric chief cells were obtained from guinea pig stomach by collagenase digestion and calcium chelation with ethylene glycol-bis(B-amynomethyl ether)-N,N,N',N'-tetraacetic acid.
RESULTS: Significant stimulation of pespinogen secretion induced by motilin occurred at 1 pmol/L, half maximum at 10 pmol/L, and maximum at

We have developed enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for pepsinogen group I and II (PG I.II) in human serum, and clinical significance of serum pepsinogen measurement was evaluated. Serum PG I.II levels in patients with gastric and duodenal ulcer were higher than those in normal healthy subjects. On the other hand, serum PG I levels in patients with pernicious anemia were significantly low levels. In both gastric ulcer and duodenal ulcer, serum PG I.II levels at active stage were higher than healing stage. These results suggested that the measurement of PG I.II levels was useful for scr

A radioimmunoassay (RIA) for human group I pepsinogens (PgI) in serum was developed, using PgI purified from gastric mucosa. The sensitivity (0.7 micrograms/l) and reproducibility of the assay were satisfactory for clinical use. In normal controls, total serum pepsinogen (T-Pg) level was 58.9 +/- 31.7 micrograms/l (mean +/- SD) (PgI, 43.6 +/- 25.0 micrograms/l; PgII, 15.3 +/- 11.1 micrograms/l). Peptic ulcer cases had elevated T-Pg levels (gastric ulcer, gastroduodenal ulcer and duodenal ulcer, in increasing order of magnitude). T-Pg levels were not useful for diagnosis of peptic ulcer because
